Based on Hanna's severely positive reviews of Emerald City Soul Club Nights, I was totally sold on going - and I got to try it for the first time this past weekend.Holy crap that was a lot of fun! Apparently ECSC is the place everyone in Seattle goes to in order to cut loose and DANCE! And by dance, I don't mean weak-ass head nodding or swaying in place, I mean really going for it and gettin' down. This is very, very, very rare in Seattle - seriously. Especially for the menfolk, but I tell you: EVERYONE was groovin' at this place. The constant shakin' to 50s and 60s soul (even when in line for the bathroom) made me feel like I was in the middle of a John Waters film. Which is so. awesome. Bonus: STRONG pours, which is good, since I believe I actually sweated out all the alcohol in my body. :) The DJs were also insanely adorable, as they be-bopped on stage, sang along, and gazed at their record albums lovingly.Emerald City Soul Club, I love you! I will definitely be back.

Totally totally totally fun! I hadn't been out dancing in way too long and last night I got to shake shake shake my booty to some old school R&B at Emerald City Soul Club. This was my first time visiting the Lo Fi Gallery. I liked it but not sure I'd come back unless I was going to ECSC. The layout is bizarre, I'd love to know what the space originally was. There's a small bar in front and even smaller bar in the "north" dance room. The bartender made one of the best Cape Cods I've had in awhile, but I wished they had a bigger beer selection. The "south" room by the bathroom was not open last night, which was too bad since the place got packed! The bathroom situation is dire, they really need to do something about that since this is a decent sized club, not a small bar. By the end of the night the potty line probably took 20 minutes! We were the first ones to arrive at 9pm, things were bumpin by 11, and when we left around 12:45am it was almost too crowded. No line outside though. It gets really hot in there, especially if you're dancing, FYI. But all that aside, this was an awesome dance party! Some people were dressed up retro style and almost everyone in the place was dancing. The north room was blastin some funk/disco music, while the front room was spinning pop and soul from the 50s and 60s. Each room had its own vibe, though the floor in the north room had lots of holes which made dancing trickier. There's hallway with couches and a table if you need to sit down or get away from the music. Everyone I encountered was friendly and having a good time, no scary thugs, no too cool to dance hipsters, no DBs and their hoochie mamas. Not a meat market and no grinding -- great crowd and great time. The $10 entrance fee will keep me from attending ECSC every month, but I will absolutely be back again for some funky, bluesy and doowoppin grooves!!

So...full disclosure: I work the door.Having said that, I love soul nite. It is the only night in Seattle with so many people getting along and dancing. Also, the door girl is pretty nice...If you like Northern Soul and rare soul, come to here the music and stay to dance. You'll get sweaty and probably meet new friends. Sweaty friends. Who like dancing.Edited to add: try the Super Awesome. Ask Suzie, the bartender, to make you one. You won't be sorry. It's pink, it's sweet, I named it. The Super Awesome, because it is.

Soul Nite, light of my life!Seriously, though, I found true love the first time I went to Soul Nite. S.Nite and I have been going steady for months now, even though we only see each other the 2nd saturday of every month at the Lo-Fi. I still haven't tried Talcum at King Cobra, which is I guess a 2nd Soul Nite?Anyway. As others have stated, the drinks are STRONG. They taste like hell going down but who doesn't like more bang for their buck ($5 for well drinks), especially in this economy? People come to soul nite to look fine and dance their asses off, two things I strongly approve of. Dapper ladies and gents who know how to dance are always fun to be around. The bathroom line can be atrocious. The bathroom can be atrocious. The music is on point, the crowd is great, and did I mention the strong drinks? I've admittedly missed parties and turned down invitations that happen to fall on Soul Nite because the love we share just can't be denied. Get your ass to the Lo-Fi, but be ready to shake it.

LOOOOVE Love love ECSC. So glad I found out about it.Been only to the Lo-Fi location on 2nd Saturdays of the month, and had an awesome wonderful groovy sexy time every time. First time I went, I had to stand in line for quite a while, I was sick --just getting over a flu. I almost gave up and left, but I pressed on and I'm so glad I did. I danced my asss off, sweated like a roasted pig over a fire pit, and felt better by the end of the night. It ACTUALLY cured my sickness and I had the most fun ever. I mean I might be biased because I'm overly fascinated by Motown + soul tunes. I like being able to sing along to the jams. Most places I go that play the Top 40 or hip-hop rap stuff, I can't really get into the music, and I would just dance to the beat. But with Soul...you listen to the lyrics, the vocals, the BASS(!!!!), the SOUL. Aaaa...I can just keep going on and on.People dress up all old-school and actually enjoy dancing. The gents aren't trying to pick up ladies and grind random strangers, the ladies can feel safe; definitely not a meat-market. People just seem more respectful.I'm gonna there every month from now on.

This place is an absolute winner. The descriptions below going back to 2008 are still accurate. Inexpensive, full bar, and the DJs are amazingly good. I think they are vinyl collectors sharing their collections with the crowd. All 45's, which means mostly obscure bands, not standard Motown/Memphis soul. Fun, friendly, exuberant crowd with a wide age range. Well worth the trip...

You've just GOT to go. This event (held every 2nd Saturday of each month) was one of the most fun nights I've had in 2010!!!I felt like I was dancing in an old Elvis movie. They play 60s/70s soul music (less popular songs, but easy to learn as you will choose to lip sync). There's no possible way to dance "dirty" to this music -- I know this sounds silly, but now I see why they danced this way! It's fast, it gets in your body and you just have to LET IT OUT!! We even pulled Dfens on the floor for a few songs... this alone should showcase the power of ECSC.Two separate DJ's play in large rooms filled with hip people, mostly 20s and 30s, who are mingling and dancing away. (The DJ's, by the by, are awesome: it's obvious they truly love what they do and exuberantly dance, sing, and clap). There's also a bar (ooh la la) and plenty of seating. Many Soul Clubbers dress in the "theme" -- think rolled up jeans, plaid shirts buttoned to the top, black rimmed glasses for the guys; pencil skirts, 50s dresses, tight sweaters for the girls. I didn't dress up but it's totally fine not to.It's a $10 cash cover, and believe me it's worth every dolla. 1. Check out the next date and location on their Myspace page2. Send me a huge thank-you card after you have the time of your life.
