Excuse me for a while, while I cry over what used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants on the eastside.I don't know what the hell happened. Back in my two jobs, call center days, I used to come here weekly. By myself. The menu is small, typical Mexican dishes so I tried a lot of the menu in those days. I was always served chips and salsa by a waitress who spoke no English. There'd be quite a few other people eating as well. The food was always perfect, the chilequiles was by far my favorite. I loved Villa y Zapata.*Also my friend tried to tell me the name translates to the Shoe House. It does not. It's a sad, sad day when I understand Spanish grammar more than a semi-fluent speaker.*Lately I've been in search of the best Mexican on the westside to no avail and after a particularly depressing Mexican restaurant-search-day, I decided to just go to VZ. I love this place, I thought. You can't go wrong with the chilequiles, I thought. At least I can have good Mexican today, I thought. I ordered the chilequiles and what came out was nothing like I remembered it. The cheese was for the most part, unmelted (which is most likely caused by the quality of cheese and not adjusting the cook time appropriately). But the red sauce was just like spicy tomato sauce. Absolutely no flavor. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed. Halfway through the meal I had to start scrapping off the paste like sauce. The blandness was becoming overwhelming. And to add to my disappointment, I was never given chips and salsa. Way to kick me when I'm down. The beans were the only saving grace. They are really thick though so once the cheese was gone, I was done.I think the best takeaway VZ (or any restaurant really) can get from this review is this:For the love of God, STOP MAKING FOOD WITH CANNED PRODUCTS! For starters, you're actually wasting more money on those products than their fresh counter parts. And more importantly, it always tastes like crap.

My first red flag was when I ordered Ice Tea and it tasted stale. It was obvious they used the tea from the night before. I ordered the Muchos Nachos as the menu said it would be a generous portion of cheeses. What I got instead was cold, with tough meat, and processed cheese sauce.

Had the buffet breakfast. The menudo was so delicious. Their pancakes had a nice sweet taste to it that it needed no syrup. Their chilaquiles and chicharron were mmm good. Thank you Villa y Zapata, your employees were very friendly.

Food does not taste authentic....when you eat at a Mexican restaurant you want real tortillas and beans. Food taste packaged and buffet was not appetizing at all. Rice is super dry. The best thing I tasted was the tortilla chips. Save your money and eat at a different place.

Huge disappointment!! Everything from service to food was horrible. Decor and ambience needs a ton of work. Our waitress was very rude and spoke Spanish only. She didn't bother to check on us or refill beverages. I ordered caldo de res which was tough as shoe leather and DRY!! How on earth can you screw up soup?!? With all the choices for Mexican food in the immediate area it's needless to say I won't return or recommend this restaurant!

Food was very bland, asked for a parillada, steak was way over cooked and very greasy. Baked potatoes were overcooked too. Did not receive some of the items we asked for and were being charged for them. We were basically the only ones there at the time.

Worse experience ever! The tea taste like it had been sitting there, not fresh! Customer service was terrible! Weren't even greeted at the entrance. There was only two other people there. I had gone before and it was excellent, but now everything changed. Messed up on our food and when asked if the lady was sure it was ours she said yes but it wasn't what we had ordered. To have a meal that cost almost $50 for the food to not even be good is horrible. Never going back and I recommend you to not go to this place.

It's not bad their salsa is good, portions are good but it's nothing special. The wife likes it and I can tolerate it, I go because she wants to. They have a very limited menu and that's one of their problems for me.

Very fucking disappointed in this place, placed an order of chilaquiles and right when I took a bite it tasted spoiled, after awhile of waiting for the waiter she finally came over and I told her how the food tasted. We asked for the check and she said sorry I'll let the cook know and asked us to pay. I can't believe we paid $15 for two spoiled plates. I don't know how this place hasn't been shut down for health code violation!
