Talk about a throwback! This is the grocery store of my youth, LOL.We needed a few dinner items while staying in the area and picked the Food Basket for convenience. It's old but well kept and prices were reasonable. We picked up some beautiful steaks that the young man in the butcher area recommended and they were so good when grilled. The produce section was clean but I found it lacking in items. We were looking for vegetables to go with our dinner but only found fresh corn and squash. We bought corn and it was fresh and tasty. We found everything we needed and employees were pleasant and we were asked several times while perusing the store if we needed help finding anything. I appreciate that kind of customer service.

had a great experience in the Food Basket today. A very helpful employee, who I am assuming was owner/manager, came up to us when we were looking for a product that didn't seem to be on the shelf. He found it online and said he would order it in and it will be here in a few days, and showed me where I would find it in the store. The gentleman who served us at the cash was very jovially and had a chill attitude. great experience and I was only buying one product today, but had such a great experience

Madeleine: What you describe is the store following protocol. I had the same thing happen to me when shopping with my husband. Our state has huge issues with alcoholism and driving under the influence. It may seem silly, but they are just doing what they can not to add to the problem. It would be illegal to have a protocol that only asked those who "appear" to be of age, so this is applied to every one. I applaud them for doing what they can to be part of the solution to selling alcohol to those underage.

The food basket is very well kept with a super helpful and kind staff. I find most of what I want here in well organized aisles. The meats are good quality and the produce quit fresh.

I have resided in Silver City several times over the years, and I have never experienced blatant discrimination, stereotypes profiling or and disrespect at least not to my face. What people may think is really none of my business if they do not direct behaviors in my presence. Anyway, I usually do not shop at Food Basket, only to order from the deli for my mother. This occasion there was a new person in the deli and was struggling because he was there alone, but he was nice and professional. When I went to check out, I noticed that there was a total of four price tags, so I simply asked him if the tags were correct, because there is usually just one for each box. The cashier, Jordon, thought it was a good idea to get smart with me, and out of nowhere loudly informed he "that we don't take food stamps for deli food" the reason he stated that to me, when there was no conversation about my payment, in which I do not receive food assistance. I asked him why he would say that to me, so he continued to also add that they were taxes on deli food. I will admit that I found this very offensive and lost my temper when he continued to be disrespectful. I requested to speak to the manager, in which Linda and Kris appeared, one on each side of me which made me more uncomfortable and defensive. Instead of moving me aside and speaking to me, to try and resolve the issue, the cashier kept interrupting me when I was trying to speak, and they stood there and made excuses for him, while Kris had the same smirk and attitude with me, speaking to me as if I was an arrogant child. I am a very education Black female, and I did not appreciate, nor will tolerate a young, arrogant teenage white boy or anyone to speak to me that way. As I stated I usually do not loose my temper and tend to handle issues calmly and professional, but regrettably I lost my temper and raised my voice. Although, I did apologize to customers behind me, it was out of character for me. Once I left, went to Tyrone, and calm down, I realized that I paid for deli beans and did not have them, so I had to return, which I planned on apologizing for raising my voice in front of customers. When I returned, I simple asked for the manager, Linda appears, I showed her the receipt and explained my item was not in my bag. She states, "I see that you paid for them, but how do I know you really did not have them once you left", offensive again, my reply was why would I try to steal a $1.41, by stating I didn't receive them. I had her follow me to the deli, to prove I ordered them. As she continues to doubt me, the deli worker, informed her that I did order them, and that a cashier just brought them to me, because they were left, and I just throw them away. I looked at her in disbelief and with an attitude she told him to replace them. I made a comment that she and her workers need to pay attention to the temperature in the country right now, about racism, stereotypes, and plan unacceptable behaviors. She then asked me what happened, as expected she did not listen, especially when continually interrupted. Anyway, once I explained again, she stated that she understood how unnecessary, and why I took offense.

The food basket is on the west end of town with all the big markets on the East end of town. So for convenience if you live on the West End this is a good place to get a few things. It reminds me of a supermarket from my youth and that might be a long time ago for some of you. It's got the basics it's got the extras and everything you want is there it's just one of those old worn supermarkets in an old worn building in an old worn parking lot on the west end of town

I only went here twice while in town but it did great by me! The liquor section is on its own and can buy liquor separate there, and not have to wait in any possible lines, and there's a lot of booze. I liked that this store had some special deals near the end of the night including tiny cut-up sandwiches for .59 cents and sugar-free pie for under $2. I picked up a bag of red Hatch peppers and water for my hike the next day, and got through the line without a wait. Nice little store with a western theme to it (as in, old west, not just western New Mexico).

Food Basket is a alright grocery store. Not a place I would want to shop at regularly as some of their prices are outrageously high, like frozen goods and some meats!!
