Came to visit the area in a February and wound up spending some time in this museum. Enjoyed the free visit. Not a huge place, but definitely full of information and insights of the college and surrounding area. The full life-sized flying dinosaur (sorry, can't spell it!) was very impressive as was the fossilized bones of just ONE enormous wing. The usual cowboy, frontier, and old-time exhibits were also around to be enjoyed and to learn. Definitely a fun & interesting place to spend the time and if I had young kids it would be a MUST see spot.

Nice, small and free. The western art gallery is lovely. The law enforcement monument out front was touching.

Although it's been awhile since I have been here, it's worth saying that I greatly enjoyed this museum. It's not too big, so it's perfect for anyone who doesn't like to stroll through history for hours. Great little exhibits. Make sure to look up! If you're visiting or have just never been, it's definitely worth a trip.

This is a great little museum. Informative and manageable, we did it in 1.5 hours. Don't miss Dan Blocker's hat from Bonanza, he was alumni at Sul Ross. Worth the drive to Alpine for this, in our opinion.

GREAT SUPPLEMENT TO ANY TRIP TO ALPINE OR BIG BEND(Warning: young adults from Central Florida in for vacation) After a great week at BBNP, we entered a rainy weekend in Alpine. The Museum was indoors, nearby, and free (donations welcome)... yet it far exceeded our expectations of just another way to escape the rain.EXHIBITS COVER EVERY SURFACEThe museum itself is probably just a little larger than a three-bedroom home yet somehow so many exhibits covering a vast amount of topics are displayed- and very organized as well. We saw fossils found around the parks, the history of its geographical formations, historic sites around Alpine, typical goods for sale from stores long ago... the accompanying signs were very informative and there are many visuals to captivate children.FOUND WITHIN THE COLLEGEThere's parking nearby. You'll probably see students wandering the grounds outside the door. It's strange but we never saw any museum this informative about Big Bend National Park while we were in there so this was great!

Very cute! This museum was much better than I expected. And the lady working the front desk was really sweet and helpful.

Part of Sul Ross University, this little museum is truly a hidden gem.Informative displays and short videos tell you all sorts of interesting things about our own unique Big Bend region. Even if you've already camped in the state park or studied it in school, you're sure to find out something new here. For me, it was learning about the mysterious cache of broken arrowheads left buried atop a mountain, and about an ancient painted mural found deep inside a remote area of the park. And if you're fortunate enough to encounter the chatty volunteer (and ex-journalism student) manning the gift shop, he'll be happy to tell you about the museum's architecture, like how its unique roof and ceiling - one of only three of its kind - came to be.Afterwards, you can walk around and admire the beautiful university grounds. All this for free. Amazing. If you're anywhere near Alpine, go already!

We stopped here during our Big Bend trip. Staff were very friendly and informative displays about the Big Bend region. Great place to stop if you are in the area on the Sul Ross campus. Be sure to hike and see "the desk" while here.
