We were pleasantly surprised, especially given the "curb appeal" of the place! This was our fist time visiting West Texas. We had done some research and realized that we needed to "set out expectations" for what to expect on our trip. That being said "Rustic" is an understatement!!!!Now, on to this particular establishment.........VERY laid back with self check-in/out. We only encountered two staff members during our stay, and they were both very friendly and "colorful" (in a good way). The accommodations, while small, and VERY RUSTIC, were clean, and thoughtfully laid out. It had ample places for our luggage, hanging clothes, toiletries, etc., and a kitchenette with coffee maker, microwave, fridge, and a sink which doubled for the bathroom sink. There was a make up dresser for my wife, with a mirror, but no hair dryer (which their website had stated would be the case, so no surprises there). The "compound" had a nicely appointed community pavilion, though it was a bit chilly at night when we were there, and we were exhausted, so we didn't use it. The bed was comfortable, and the heating/AC unit worked properly and wasn't unusually noisy. We left before the cafe was open, and they had closed by the time we checked in, so we didn't get a chance to try it, but the lingering food odor was wonderful, so we were a bit disappointed that we missed out.The ONLY comment I have is that the price, WHILE LESS THAN SOME OF THE OTHER PLACES WE ENCOUNTERED ON THIS TRIP, seemed a tad on the high end. We are generally a Hilton/Best Western/Holiday Inn Express type of client and we paid about the same for "Rustic" as we would for typical lodging at one of those establishments. That being said, this was the best lodging VALUE we experienced during our stay in West Texas, so not really a complaint. We would/will stay there again if/when we're out that way, again.

We were in need of a last minute place to stay due to an unexpected last minute change of plans. Check in was super easy, the accommodations were better than anticipated, and the tent camping area was secluded and easy to access. Spectacular views of the night sky made it perfect! Highly recommend!

This place was perfect for our wants and needs during our trip to the Davis Mountains! Everything from the location, price, availability, and comfort to the helpful staff, beautiful scenery, and peace and quiet made this the ideal place to stay. We're a family of four (including two teens) and stayed in one of the two-bed cabins. It was very clean, comfortable, and just the right size for our luggage and telescope equipment. The mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee pot allowed us to have a few simple meals instead of always dining out. The staff was very considerate to put us closer to where I'd be able to conveniently accomplish my astrophotography each night. In fact, the location is perfect for that hobby due to the red porch lights, distance from the town (which is still dark), and the astronomy pad set up for folks with telescopes and camera gear.We enjoyed our stay so much that we extended our trip an extra day, and the staff helped us accomplish that very smoothly. Further, thanks to the staff's recommendation (personally and in the binder included in the room), we walked across the road to Dolores Mountain and got some amazing photos--day and night--and made some excellent friends during our hike there. We recommend the Mountain Trails Lodge to anyone coming to visit the Davis Mountains area, and this will certainly be our first choice for lodging next time we visit.

This hotel is actually a series of rustic cabins set in a row. Rooms are large, super-clean and bright, with comfy beds and lovely warm quilts. Each cabin has a small kitchenette with a small fridge and microwave, plus a window unit with both AC and heat. Everything is well-maintained and in good working order. Each cabin has a covered porch where you can sit and take in the landscape around you for miles around. Only a few minor downsides - (a) bathroom/shower is very small - barely room to turn around, and (b) it is very hard to see the entrance from the road at night - the signpost lights are very dim (likely to reduce light pollution for the McDonald Observatory nearby). Note that the lodge longer serves breakfast or BBQ, so you'll have to head into town for food. Mountain Trails lodge isn't fancy by any means, but it covers all the bases and is our favorite place to stay in Fort Davis!

These great rustic cabins are perfect for those needing a place to crash after a day of exploring the Davis Mountains. Our family of 4 stayed in the 2 bed cabin. All have a little kitchenette with a mini fridge and coffee maker. Perfect for storing sandwich fixings and breakfast needs. The stars at night are beyond amazing. We were cozy and happy the 3 nights we stayed and the owners are very friendly. We would happily stay here again.

Wonderful place to stay! The breakfast is absolutely delicious and the dining area is very comfortable and relaxing. The owners are friendly, attentive, and accommodating but also respectful of your space and privacy. They take their cues from you as to how much privacy you want. Want to eat your breakfast in peace and quiet? You got it. But if you want to shoot the breeze and laugh over coffee with your hosts, they have seem to love to do that, too.

a large group of us stayed at the Mountain Trails Lodge for a week in June 2018 for a work retreat. it was perfect! we've stayed at other lovely places in town, but if you have a group or are looking for something a bit quieter just outside of downtown, this is the place for you. the Turner family was incredibly sweet and accommodating, and we can't thank them enough for taking such good care of us.
