We arrived around lunch time, the place was busy and we were looking forward to good Mexican food. The decor is good, and we were seated in a booth in the dining room. Service started well. Drinks came promptly and our order was taken. The salsa and chips came but I had just a piece of chip to try the salsa one reviewer raved about. The salsa is not watery it has a good texture it does have cilantro and I'm one of those that cilantro taste like soap to me. The chips were very thick and hard.We ordered a chicken enchillada plate and a pork tamale plate. The beans and rice were okay nothing to complain about. However the main components of our meal were horrible. The breading around the pork tamales tasted off to both of us and the amount of filling was miniscule I didn't even finish 1 tamale and it came with 3. The enchilada plate covered in a very spicy red sauce with the chicken part of the enchilada sprinkled on top. Upon investigation the enchilada base was just folded tortillas. Now we looked for our waitress hoping she'd come back to fill drinks or to get some sour cream to calm the red sauce or even to ask us how everything was but she was not found until checking out. When we went to pay (for 2 pretty much untouched plates) we were not asked how everything was. The total was $25.50. Oh and our waitress who was not the one we were paying was standing near the register having a heated phone call with what sounded like it could be her kid being ready to go when she got home. Service & Food was horrible. So bad I didn't tip. We came hungry and left hungry. Will never go back! Worst place the whole trip!

This place has the rudest women working there. Smells like raw sewage in the eating area, and no greeting at all when entering establishment. When we mispronounced a word the waitress was extremely hateful about it. I would not recommend this place to anyone at all. Go somewhere that appreciates the business instead.

Another average West Texas Mexican restaurant. The shining points are the extremely good salsa and their homemade tortilla chips. The main food portions are okay. Slightly better than average. When I walked in there were two waitresses and only three tables including me so I figured service should be exceptional. Although I got my chips, salsa, drink and menu quickly, they were quite slow to refill them even though one waitress had no table and walked my my empty chip basket and water multiple times. Typical West Texas servers.Back to that salsa. It's reallllly good. Good amount of spice, not too tomato-y. I could eat that salsa all day. It paired really well with their unique and homemade chips. They're different but good with their crunch and crispness. I ordered the omelette with brisket and a side of pancakes. The brisket in the omelette tastes oven cooked. The omelette was alright but not amazing. They have uniquely cut breakfast potatoes which were decent. Could use more crispness and salt. The pancakes were OK, they weren't burnt like one review showed but were pretty gummy. Oh, the decor in this place. Umm. Looks like a bad attempt at an Italian restaurant with the tacky fake plants and cheap wall art. Kinda hard to believe someone actually thought it looks good.Overall, average Mexican food. The only thing that gets it a 4 star instead of 3 is the salsa.

I lived right around the corner from these guys, and I really miss this restaurant. I cannot find Chili Verde anywhere in the Houston area, so I'm very sad but I have moved away from J Penos! They have a very large variety of burritos available for purchase. You can order any burrito at any time. You pay at the first window and usually you get the food at the second window, if they're super busy especially. The only taco I can truly recommend is the Chili Verde, but I actually have another tacos and they were very good as well. If you like salsa please ask for extra because it's also good, but they put in those little plastic cups and so it sometimes is just not enough for someone like me who loves their salsa with their breakfast tacos.

I went on a Saturday around 3pm, so maybe that is the reason for my experience here. It took the waiter forever to bring our drinks and take our order. I had to walk to the front of the restaurant to ask him for a refill on our chips. We asked for the grilled cheese sandwich kids meal, which was soft slices of bread with drippy queso and a breakfast sausage patty in the middle. Not what we were expecting and my kids were not a fan. My food was cold, I should have asked for them to put it in the microwave a little longer because that's what it tasted like - reheated food. We will not be returning here. There are so many other better Mexican restaurants in the area, in my opinion.

I go and eat here for authentic Mexican food. It's well seasoned and the salsa is delicious. I also go here for what this restaurant is not. It's not a fast food franchise. It's not Rosa's cantina, JumBurrito or Taco Villa. Things take longer

Ordered a Bacon & Egg burrito and specifically asked for no cheese (I have stomach ulcers so any bit of dairy can be incredibly painful) . Ofcourse, they put cheese on it so I go back and ask for another burrito and made it clear that I didn't want cheese on, that I had just ordered one the same way and it came out with cheese. The guy at the drive thru window didn't care much for the issue or my concerns. I got my second order without cheese but as I was finishing up...I find this in my burrito...can officially say I AM DONE WITH THEM! WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. Better off making my own burritos at home.

Food was cold, brisket tacos were not moist and flavorful. Salsa was good, and I like that they make their own chips. Queso is definitely lacking in flavor. Do yourself a favor and just go to Rosa's.
