Avoided tamales for 3 years after getting food poisoning off my first one. Now, here I am with 2 dozen tamales.

Unlabeled Bags - I don't eat pork, I had to have my bf try all of them to identify what meat they were made out of.

The chef/owner churns our batches upon batches of fresh tamales right out of the steamer. Look at that steam!
Docena de tamales de puerco ( dozen pork tamales for the unfortunate that don't speak Spanish)
Sharpie reference for how thin they are.
Measured under 1" with calipers. What a shame.

No frills, all flavor! What an absolutely delicious treat. In lieu of a sit down brunch, my husband and I hit up this family run tamale spot, grabbed a down tamales (6/ea of cheese/jalapeno and chicken) and ate them In Roosevelt Park, admiring the renovated Michigan Central Station facade. It was a perfect meal: simple, authentic, flavorful, and affordable. I couldn't ask for more!

Since I am staying in Mexicantown and haven't had tamales in years. I had to stop by this place. Unfortunately they only had pork and spicy beef left. So I'm got the pork with the salsa sauce. They were fresh steaming hot. The homemade salsa sauce was delicious. The price was okay $3.00 per tamale. I loved the aesthetics of the restaurant very traditional Mexican style.

Amazing tamales! My mom and I went as soon as they opened, and they were still rolling/preparing them. They are always fresh and full of flavor. My favorite is the beef, while my mom loves the jalapeño and pork. I always buy too bags because I eat one packet in the car. Bring cash!

Love this place, favorites are the pork w/jalapeño, cheese w/jalapeño, and bean. We order extra and freeze in bags of 2-3 for an anytime snack/meal, they freeze well and are perfect for when that craving hits!Be advised they have increased prices - each dozen is now $15, still cash only. They do not label the bags so you have to look at the number and color of twist ties on the bag to know at a glance what flavor you have:- white = sweet- green = pork2 green = bean- yellow = chicken- blue = beef- red = pork and jalapeño2 red = cheese and jalapeño

Yay! Was at the tamaleria on a Tuesday and they had bean tamales, which they don't usually have until the weekends! I'm vegetarian, so was really happy as they only typically have meat options during the week. It pays to ask! Traveling through in an RV - so these went right into the freezer to enjoy in the coming days. Wish I had time to explore more restaurants in Mexicantown.

Heads up, this place is primarily a take out restaurant. The interior is basically a giant storage room with a ton of refrigerators, there's a kitchen and another room where multiple ladies make tamales while watching Hispanic soaps but the "seating" is literally one table with stuff already on it. That being said the guy who took our order was patient with us and when we bought a few frozen ones to take home, was very passionate about explaining the proper way to steam them the get the best texture. We did get a few tamales to eat in our car and were pleasantly surprised. While the tamales are some of the smallest I've seen (think a large cigar), they all had very good flavor and the masa was well-proportioned. The corn flour wasn't too greasy, dry, or rubbery and the meats were all savory and tender. The chicken and pork with jalapeño were probably our favorites. I normally eat 3-4 tamales as a full meal but could easily double that number here given the smaller size.Overall I think the tamales here are good and decently priced considering each tamale ends up being just a little over a dollar. The lack of seating, relatively remote location, and being cash only makes this place inconvenient to go to but it's worth a try if you've never had authentic tamales.
