Takoi

Took me years to finally make it here and I'm kicking myself for it. Simply put, it was one of the best meals I've had in Detroit in a long time.I went with my wife and 2 friends and we split a bunch of stuff, so I'll focus on just a few...Food-wise, the Crispy Spare Ribs and Duck Jok were standouts. As for cocktails, most were good -- the Som Tumtini & Any Other Name were outstanding. That said, there was ONE miss... the Special Tea just really wasn't my cup of tea (pun intended).Service was quick for a packed Saturday evening and helpful when we had question.Absolute must visit and well-deserving of its reputation.

Spontaneously ended up dining at this place with friends and thoroughly enjoyed our experience! The service was so helpful with choosing the best dishes on the menu (you can't go wrong with anything) and the ambiance was aesthetically pleasing and not too loud at all. My friends and I ate family style which is the way to go here so you can try a little bit of everything. The crispy ribs were a miss for me because I prefer more meat but my favorites were the thai tea cocktail and khao soi noodles. Our waiter convinced us to get the coconut ice cream dessert which was so refreshing. I'm definitely coming back!

4.5 star restaurant So much to like about Takoi. From the moment we arrived, we enjoyed the unique colored lighting and decor, concrete block walls and entire vibes of the restaurant. Our server was knowledgeable and helped guide us to a family style meal where we picked seven different items for the four of us to share. I'll upload the menu and circle the items we got because it's easier than trying to remember the exact names of the dishes. He also explained that things would come out sporadically so family style tended to work best. Since we all had similar types of things we like this work well.We started with these little coconut, flavored bite-size items that he referred to his pancakes. They were tiny, but tasty. They'd actually be really good to end the meal because they're pretty sweet. We had a salad that was chopped up, and I believe it had pork in it. Very flavorful. A noodle dish that he described as similar to Ramen with some broth with another item that we had. It had a chicken leg inside. And it was delicious. I think he said it was a staple that's almost always on the menu. We had an eggroll that had deli meat inside, which was kind of unique. I liked the sauce that came with it. The broccoli had a nut paste and it was pretty good though I like the roasted broccoli I make it home so this didn't allow me quite as much as other dishes. Then came two main course dishes to share. One was a steak that was sliced, and it was flavorful and pretty good. But the favorite was the short ribs. They were sweet and tasty and had a crunchy type outside. Hard to describe, but this and that noodle dish are the two things that stood out most to me.We did not get dessert. But it was an excellent birthday meal for me and my family.

Ordered 3 dishes to split between two people and it was the perfect amount. Som tum Thai was awesome but super spicy - they are not kidding lol. This is probably not the meal to go to on a first date (or maybe I am just messy) bc I somehow got food all over the place but it's a really cute spot for small friend gathering or even just another person! Love the food and vibe here and can't wait to come back.

Takoi is one of my favorite restaurants. You will not find flavor like this anywhere else. Great ambience. Usually busy so try and make a reservation. Great happy hour and outdoor patio for summer time

My friend and I decided to check out Takoi when I was visiting them in Detroit. The food was delicious! We got a 5pm reservation on a Friday night (it was the only time available that suited our schedule), so just make a reservation early if you want to eat a little later in the day. Parking is a little more complex but there is free parking on the road so you may just have to walk a little bit, but still fairly convenient. We were greeted and sat down pretty quickly and the spot was so cute! Very intimate and I could tell that the vibes later at night would be amazing for a date night spot. We opted to try the tasting menu and it was beyond plenty for 2 of us! We had no idea what was happening and what meal was coming next (it wasn't necessarily in order of the menu itself) so we were surprised. However, the pacing was something I would ask them to adjust. Given we were still enjoying one item, they'd bring another and we felt a little overwhelmed at the fact we couldn't just leisurely enjoy our meal. However, the food was DELICIOUS. I am a little curious if they change the sizing of their tasting menu if you have more people, but it is an all or nothing deal for the table. Either everyone gets it or no one... so thinking about that, you have to just be mindful! I definitely want to check it out again in the evening to really get the vibes of the place, but I enjoyed the food.

Everything about this place was great, including the music. There was just one thing that really turned me off and ruined my experience. In the process of signing our check, and finishing up a last drink, a food runner/hostess got extremely loud with me to tell me that my time was up at the table. Her demeanor and approach was horrible when she dropped off my food, and it was even more horrifying as she yelled at me that it was time to leave. I felt super uncomfortable being spoken to that way after a $200 dinner.

Had an incredible dining experience at Takoi yesterday evening! We started with the Promises in Vortex drink and were amazed at the different flavors and spices encapsulated in this drink - ended up getting two rounds of this! For food we started with the Naem Khao Tod which was the perfect combination of crispy curried rice along with pork and other greens. This was an incredible way to start the meal with the differences in spice and texture. For entrees the two of us shared the stir-fried squid (lovely spice and paired nicely with the sticky rice to soak up the sauce!), moo ping (the tamarind chili dipping sauce helped tone down the heat but still felt full of flavor), and the crispy spare ribs. The crispy spare ribs were definitely the star of the show, but we wished we would've exchanged the moo ping with a lighter dish as the ribs were quite heavy/rich by the time we got to them. The service was quick and attentive, and I was surprised with how fast our food came around. The interior of the restaurant is cozy, however I would recommend making a reservation to secure a spot as it is on the smaller side. My friend and I lucked out with a prior cancellation and were able to be seated quickly. All in all, I look forward to recommending Takoi to friends visiting the area, and I can't wait for my next trip back!

Hidden gem!!! Seriously AMAZING drinks and food. I tried both the Tom Kha Ramen, Spaghetti Lad Na, and the Coconut Milk Ice Cream. Would recommend any of those, they were so so good. The staff was so fun and nice, we sat at the bar. It is such a cool place.
