First of all, let met preface my review by saying that I am NOT a professional reviewer/taster, so... yeah. I'm a huge fan of hole-in-the wall bars and hidden-away treasures of restuaurants, so keep that in mind. After having gone to Jamaica for two weeks several years ago, I've developed a bit of an ongoing craving for authentic Jamaican/Caribbean food. Initially my fix was Jamaica Jamaica, which was off of 7-Mile and the Southfield Freeway. However, when they went under, I was completely bummed. Until I found out about Rono's. I'm kind of a mainstreamer... I like the basic curry/jerk chicken the best. Everything tastes fantastic, is served authentically (as far as I can tell, anyways), and is priced reasonably. You gotta be on "Jamaica Time" if you don't order ahead, though... my walk-up takeout took about 15-20 minutes to bring to the window and on a second trip, a party of about 6 people took about 30-40 minutes to serve. But you know what? It's not a bad thing. The employees are super-friendly, are always checking up on you (while not being obtrusive at all!), and you won't find more smiles... whether it's when they serve you or after you take your first bite. Why didn't I give them 5 stars? Well, while they're food/service is great, I think 5 stars should be reserved for truly monumental experiences and while discovering Rono's was just that for me, nitpickers might complain about the barren facilities and the questionable neighborhood. But for me? Love the place to death. I recommend it to everybody I know...Fun side note: It seems that the neighboring community (McNichols/Lodge Freeway intersection) has a great number of AUTHENTIC Caribbean business fronts, from groceries to restaurants to catering services. Be sure to ask around... I'm sure you'll find even more gems!
