Lunch! 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese Sub
a sandwich cut in half
Store front
I had to come back for the 18 layers of deli goodness. So good but I think I prefer a smaller size for a better roll-to-deli meat ratio.
A quick detour to grab lunch at one of my fave sandwich places. As good as I remembered.

Be honest, is this too much lettuce?

Amazing! Incredible! 14-layers of deli meats and cheese on a soft roll, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and dressing.
Faygo pop (rock and rye), Better made potato chips (Detroit staples)...... $10 - 18-layer sub..... Best combination in town!!!!!

Saw a review on YouTube and had to try this spot. It was exactly what I expected. Fast and friendly service. Awesome deli counter and nice store. Had a 12-layer original Italian sub. It was amazing. This is a Detroit tradition that I didn't know about until yesterday. Glad I saw that video. Check it out.

Places like this are why I know the state of Michigan to have awful food offerings and absolutely no taste or standards. These subs were mediocre on a good day. They're bland, mostly flavorless, needlessly messy, and are something any kid could make better on his own with a trip to the grocery store. Nothing about them can't be easily replicated. I once gave this place a 3/5 - a bit better than Subway, but with less zip and neatness. Things have somehow gotten way worse since it opened up.This place is now as much of a dump as the city it's located in. The meats used to be cut fresh for every sandwich, which was one of the major selling points. Now, they preslice meats and have trays of them to grab from. One of few edges are lost to a place people who come here would probably mock."Everything" doesn't mean what it used to either. You used to get mustard, mayo, a choice of pepper...now, you get Italian dressing and peppers if you remember to ask and specify which you want. Hard rolls were always sold out fast, but now I think they stopped bothering and just don't have them a lot of days.I haven't trusted the deli items in about a year now. They just seemed off to me. Once great, now kind of bleh. It seemed like they made them and just kept them around for a few days to a week to save on costs. I've now seen confirmation in the form of "packed on" dates being for days that haven't even happened yet. It's so fresh it's not even made yet, and won't be for another two weeks. Lucky you, future boy. The sub making area is also a mess. The counter is drenched in salad and other ingredients, and so is the floor. These aren't just gripes but are signs the food isn't actually sanitary or safe to eat. There used to be a woman that worked here who was great at fixing up orders and generally being a pleasure to interact with. She seems to have left. Good for her. The owner is cool, but he can't do it all alone. If you want some Uncle Ray's chips or other convenience store items it may still be worth a stop, but I can't recommend anything else.Location: 1*Convenience: 3*Service: 1* (4* for previous worker and owner)Product/quality: 1*Aesthetics: 2*

Continue to eat at the originally Gonella's. Their Italian subs are unbelievable. Lots of fresh sides, desserts, chips and drink options. The owner is personable. Been frequenting this place for years now. A really great lunch that is fast and fresh. Or don't feel like cooking? Bring home some subs for dinner.

I ordered the standard 8 inch Italian, no cheese sub banana peppers. I ordered one for myself and someone else. I ordered over the phone because it was lunch and I was expecting a wait. There was no wait. At all. And I'm shocked. Those sandwiches were so good!!! $7.50 each and I could only finish half. The store is cute and looked like a typical Italian sandwich shop or deli. Lots of jars of pickled veggies, breads, cookies, chips...I'll definitely be back.

One of the best places in all of Southeast Michigan for an Italian Sub. You order by how many layers of meat and cheese you want on choice of bun, the 8 & 2 on a hard roll being our favorite ! When I worked in the area Gonella's was tops on our list for lunch. Now whenever in the area...still tops on our list !

Over the past 15 months, during COVID, my food preferences have altered. I have had more pizza over these months than in the past decade. I discovered that I really love almond croissants. And I will go out of my way for a good Italian sub.I've been to the Gonella's near my work but the only time I pass this location is when I have to take a detour onto Telegraph. I note the location but it is too far from work or home, generally, to consider it for lunch.Today, though, the stars were aligned and I was able to pull in to the small lot during lunch. Yay!The store is quite large. At the center is a self-serve olive bar with all kinds of brined goodies. Against one wall are shelves filled with chips and popcorn. Perpendicular to that wall is a huge refrigerated wall of drinks and colas. I love different flavored pop but today, I was focused on my mission, the famed Italian sub.Pricing is based on the number of layers of deli meats and cheese. I went with the 14 layers, on a soft roll, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Italian dressing. By the time I got home, the dressing had soaked through the wrapper, so I knew my sub would be good. I was so not disappointed. The sandwich was loaded with layer after layer of salami, mortadella, ham, and cheese. For $10, I felt that I received a lot of value.Service was quick and friendly. Before I could scope out the deli case of yummy-looking salads, my sandwich was done. The staff must have wizard-like sandwich-making skills.

Wow if you want an outstanding sub from three layers to 12 or 15 layers, you can't beat this place and yet it's reasonably priced based on the quantity given and the quality.
