This is such an excellent venue to see a show! It's small, so intimate, and everyone can bring regular sized folding chairs or blankets. Laying on a blanket actually would be comfortable, as it's a small hill that you sit on. There is a patio space up front where you could stand or dance, and everyone had a great time on a beautiful night. They serve canned alcoholic drinks and chips and candy - there was a Hibachi food truck parked during our show, which was really expensive - $25 for an entree of chicken and rice, and the portions weren't very large. BUT they probably rotate the trucks, and it is an ideal setup for that. Sound was good and the vibe is really chill right on Woodward and Second. It's really fun to be surrounded by city life as you're watching the concert. The ticket price was only $35, so I'd come see almost anything here. It was such an enjoyable summer evening.

Newly added to my must-visit list! My wife and I recently went to the Detroit Actors Theater Company live production of Dream Girls here and WOW! What a great show in a great venue. We're planning to come back with my niece and nephew for a summer movie night if the times work. We brought a picnic blanket, which allowed us to take advantage of seating up front that was left open for that, but you can also bring a chair or there are some chairs provided. I think the park was especially busy the night we were there; we were glad we got there fairly early. The concession stand appeared fairly comprehensive, although I didn't purchase anything. Two reasons for only four stars: like many public facilities, the park has an insufficient number of women's bathroom stalls. Even with a 20 minute intermission, it wasn't possible for for everyone to use the restroom. And second, there was no system established to maintain safe walkways between the picnic blankets. I hope that these health/safety issues will be addressed.

What a lovely spot for a movie!Came here most recently for movies in the park and it was awesome. Super well manicured green space with a slight hill around a fancy stage (great for music as well as movies) makes for the perfect spot to chill out for a special event or just hang out for an afternoon. If you're not the type to sit on the ground there are also a few tables and chairs scattered around under the trees (decorated in twinkle lights--I LOVE TWINKLE LIGHTS!) and a patio shooting off from the super awesome little cafe/bar/atrium area. The cafe in and of itself is worth a visit. Free wifi, tasty juices, beer, liquor, popcorn during the movies, and other snacks like hummous and sandwiches. On rainy days the movies are show inside the atrium but I'm a little skeptical since it's a bit small. However it is nice that that's an option so the night doesn't get cancelled due to rainy weather. At dusk the view is perfect. All the buildings around lit up against a darkening sky. I took more than my fair share of photos of the Fisher Building all lit up and lookin' gorgeous!Oh, and the best part? Access to the park, the movies, the concerts? FREE. Oh yeah.

I've been to New Center Park for several events. It reminds me of a slightly larger "pocket park" in NYC. Nestled between two buildings and gated, it's a controlled environment, which allows for liquor licensed events. the hillside set up allows for good outdoor sound. When I have been for music, folks do congregate outside the fence, but I have not seen them encouraged to leave. There is no playground equipment for children here, but there are usually plenty of tables and chairs. If you work in the area, it's a good place to brown bag. If you have an opportunity to attend a movie or concert, it's a great location with street and lot parking, reasonably priced.

More people having been showing up for Wednesday night at the movies. And Holy 80's, what a lineup! Coming to America last night, Raiders of the Lost Ark next week. The BBQ is fired up to serve burgers, cow and veggie, and hot dogs, random animal parts and random animal parts. Buy your ticket from inside and take it out to the cook manning the grill. I'm hoping this place becomes a Detroit institution. Only THREE reviews? Get with it, yelpers! You chumps missed The Goonies fer cryin out loud!

The city has managed to transform a sprawling grassy area nestled between the Fisher Building along Grand Boulevard near Cass Avenue into a new summer destination. I have to say, I'm impressed. New Center Park was used as one of several music stages during Detroit's now-defunct CityFest and is now a fully-functioning entity of its own.The park is currently open Wednesday- Saturday and plays host to live music, family events and a small farmer's market. I've heard whisperings about open air movie screenings to come and can hardly wait. (I'm banking on a Hitchcock flick before summer's out). What's more, there's a great cafe with a fresh menu, juices, limited beers and a stocked bar. Expect to be carded at the gate. You don't even have to remember to bring a picnic basket and blanket. The park provides an ample amount of fantastic, mod orange chairs and tables. There were plenty to go around last night when I went to see a few great local bands, headlined by Conspiracy of Owls. It's a great, free option for a summer night in the city. And here's a tip. You might want to snag a delicious coffee at Stella International Cafe in the Fisher Building beforehand, or if you're game, make a night of it with drinks at Northern Lights Lounge around the corner on W. Baltimore.
