Midtown Shangri-La is my go-to spot when I'm I want authentic and high-quality Cantonese food. Whether it's their incredible dim sum, fresh sushi, or my the sesame chicken dinner with veggie lo mein (which is my go to)--this place never disappoints. The food is always fresh, and you can taste it in the quality of the chicken. The sesame chicken is perfectly cooked with a flavorful, crispy coating, and the lo mein is loaded with fresh veggies. The atmosphere is welcoming and homey, making it the perfect place for a comforting meal. If you haven't been, I highly recommend giving it try. One of the owners, Mr. Wong is the best and the service is also super friendly and knowledgeable! You won't regret it!

Stopped here for a quick lunch and everything I tried was delicious! I really liked the Deep-Fried Squid off the Dim Sum menu. I've had this type of dish before, and Shangri-La did a really good job. The squid was just a touch on the chewy side, but not too bad. The batter was wonderfully light and crispy. I would order this again. The Steamed BBQ Pork bun was very good as well. The amount of filling was generous, and the sauce wasn't too sweet. Finally, I tried the Fried Rice with Shrimp and BBQ Pork. The taste of the dish was far more delicate (and less greasy) than many fried rice dishes I've tried. I liked that. The veggies and pork were plentiful. There weren't as many shrimp, but the ones that were added were larger than I would have expected. I enjoyed this dish and would order it again.

One of my favorite restaurants to go to. The food is delicious, the service is great, and the ambiance is cozy. There's so many choices to choose from as they have sushi, dim-sum, and an entree menu. My personal favorites are the fried pork chop, braised beef brisket noodle soup, and stuffed eggplant.

We went with a group of 8 to Shangri-La and they did a great job handling the large party - service and food delivery were timely and fast so if you need to get in with a little bit larger group they were great with accommodating. There are three different menus (sushi, dim sum, and the rest) so it can be a little confusing and overwhelming to order. The food was really good- we did the sesame chicken, fried dumplings and the firecracker sushi roll to try a variety. I would certainly go back, it wasn't the best I have ever had but it was reasonably priced and was solid.

So, I'm typing this review on a Tuesday night, while I stand in the lobby of the restaurant waiting for a carry out order. Mind you, I tried this place for the first time 3 days ago. Yes, 2 trips to the same restaurant, one that's an hour from my house, in a 3 day period. It's that good. The dim sum offerings are amazing, the red bean bun and sesame ball are the show stoppers. Best I've had in the Detroit area. As far as entrees go, I'm usually moderately adventurous with my Asian food but sometimes a nice basic almond boneless chicken is what is needed. That was the case during visit one. I've been thinking about it ever since, this the return trip. I also got beef Lo mein and sesame chicken today as well. I'm sure they'll be just as good. The restaurant itself is quaint and clean. Watching the staff is a lot of fun, everyone is totally in sync...it's a well oiled machine.

Great food all round! and amazing service! We had such a great time eating here. Our server Isabel was the sweetest and very attentive. The sushi was very flavorful and fresh, the dim sum was well seasoned and generous with filling inside, pad thai tasted good as well! Would definitely stop by again if we're ever in the area!

27.2% "gratuity" is automatically added to your bill with no opportunity to modify. I'm sure most of us have experienced just about every variation of suggested tip amounts, service charges, large party charge, etc., but Midtown Shangri-La has a new one! Apparently, their sales TAX is soooo good, they force you to tip 20% gratuity to it as well....excellent! Menu states 20% service charge is automatically added for party of 4 people or more. But, 20% is automatically added to the total amount of your meal after already including 6% sales tax. This is pretty sneaky and dishonest, to say the least. Again, there is no opportunity to change "gratuity" amount. I don't mind when restaurants include "suggested" tip amounts, and am impressed when those are calculated on the pre-tax amount, as should be the case. This experience at the end of an otherwise decent meal is memorable and unfortunate and speaks volumes to the mindset of the restaurant management.I love to eat, I love to cook....finding food and flavor for me and my family is a passion, so this type of unnecessary grifting is really upsetting. We will not be back.

Great service, the food is okay. Been there twice, based on great reviews, but the food seems to be missing a lot of flavor. It's very fresh, crisp veggies, lots of vegan options...but kinda meh. It's always busy so maybe I'm just not ordering right.
