City Club is one of my fave late night dancing destinations in Detroit that veers away from your average club experience. Dark brooding decaying industrial club tucked away in the basement of the Leland hotel definitely has character and a rich history. Leland, once an elegant ballroom in the basement of the formerly luxurious hotel is said to be haunted by several roaming spirits including the ghost of Jimmy Hoffa who once stayed in the hotel and a white ghost that supposedly roams the dark halls of the club's basement. It has evolved from punk to gothic to industrial over the years. The club is hidden away in the back of the parking lot of the hotel. When you first enter the club, you'll descend stairs with walls covered in black decaying paint covered in graffiti. There's a dj when you first enter that plays more nostalgic industrialesque music like Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and The Cure. You'll navigate in the dark lit, painted black, bass filled art/graffiti covered walls and lights past the bar to a labyrinth like maze of rooms of late night shenanigans leading to a large open room where the dj is pumping techno/electronic/edm/some hip hop and rap. Light sticks, light whips and glow hula hoops abound on the dance floor, with people wearing eccentric funky clothes. Hipster/punk crowd...no pretentious creepers...just people who love music and want to dance. It's like dancing the night away in an unpretentious Hot Topic meets haunted house. Fun place to let loose after a concert/show and is open late past traditional hours. I've been here a few times, after MoPop fest, beer fest, Halloween etc. The cover charge isn't too bad, usually about $10, sometimes more or less depending on if they have a more prominent dj. Drinks are basic, nothing fancy...expect dive bar type drinks. They can make a gin and tonic but not a Moscow mule. Bathrooms a little dingy but to be expected with divey industrial feel. It can range from kind of dead to busy, which seems to be the case with a lot of dance bars downtown. Even if it's dead, still fun with a group of friends. Overall, cool fun industrial dance bar. If you're looking for the typical club experience, might not be for you but everyone should check this place out at least once. Perfect late night destination after a show in Detroit.

This is a dance club that also offers concerts and other events. This club is pretty standard for downtown smaller clubs and venues. Needs soMe updating but it gets the job done. Has many variety of events to experience here

My favorite club in Detroit. It's got a BEAST of a sound system after the upgrade. Lots of room. Crumbling walls add to the dark decor. It has some pretty excellent talent booked there. Friendly staff and bartenders. Good deal on drinks!

Treated so poorly here. Walked in (of course not knowing what it was) just wanting a drink with a buddy. The place is a hole in the wall dive bar meets Halloween party. We were stared at, mocked and ridiculed for being in there. Two white dudes in jeans and polos. It's funny how those that ripped on us would be the same ones to say they are "cast aside" by others in society. Not a very "open" place for guys who just stumbled upon the place to grab a drink. Unless you're into hating yourself, goth, hating outsiders and people in polos I wouldn't step foot in this dump.

I love City Club. I have been coming here for over 17 years and am so happy to still have a goth club close to home. Very reasonable prices to park, get in and for the drinks too. Great music played by awesome DJ's. Will always come out to City Club

I came here for a $40 at-the-door Movement party, and there was a wait for people who had pre-paid. I mean, really, what's the point? The floors are sticky, the bathrooms are gross, and the smoking areas are really, really disgusting. However, I suppose that adds to this old hotel's charm. Paint is peeling everywhere, and there are little coves for shenanigans. The larger, main space for music is pretty epic, though there's a rather narrow area to enter and exit it from, so it causes quite a bottleneck and lots of pushing.Definitely not my favorite music venue, but it was quite memorable.

We were lucky enough to end up in Detroit on a Saturday so we could go to City Club. If you're a fan of goth/industrial nights or clubs, this one is killer. Wild art and graffiti mixed with band stickers are everywhere and the main dance floor is large and eerie. The front bar DJ had a different vibe than the main dance floor so you could find a groove to suit your mood. Would go again.

I love this place. I really hope nothing happens to it when the building gets renovated.

I've been here quite a few times and never had any issues before. I've heard the rumors, but I didn't know what to think. However, after last night I will never be going back and urge folks to use caution. This is unsafe. A normal bar does not and should not collect your birth certificate and passport to get in. It was really messed up of them to even ask for them and made me wildly uncomfortable. I've been of drinking age for decades. It's not even close. I have a drivers license. I thought the guy was joking when he asked for my other papers to prove my identity. He wasn't. We left. Seriously, this isn't normal for a bar or club.
