Jim is a community asset. His knowledge of the pipe industry is the best. Great selection of estate pipe and an awesome selection of cigars. His cigar brand is an awesome smoke.

A throwback and a gem. This is what a tobacco shop should be. The owner is welcoming, his place is nostalgic, and his product is unique. I'd highly recommend if you are looking for something different than the usual cigar/cigarette/vape shop.

I went into this place with no expectations and Jim just gained another customer for as long as this place is open for business. He has a wealth of knowledge about cigars that he's willing to share with you. He recommended the SupremoEXL & the SupremoEXL Grande. All I can say is they where both great smokes. I just left there buying more cigars. This is a hidden gem so make your way over there and see Jim.

No matter how long this place has been in business, it's a total trash pit. You can smell old stale tobacco 50 feet from the door. If you're a pipe smoker don't be tricked into the famous "hay market". very disappointing.

This is probably the last true tobacconist in the metro Detroit area. Jim, the owner, is always in the shop and ready to fulfill all of your tobacconist desires! He's a little rough around the edges, but he has character. It's almost as if you're walking into Ollivander's Wand Shop. To be honest, I'm not a heavy pipe smoker, I've only done it a handful of times, but if you're a seasoned smoker you don't need me to tell you that this is the place for you!

I am a pipe smoker and a pipe collector, so I have mixed feelings of Hill and Hill, but I do tend to stop in whenever I am in the area. For pipe smokers, we have slim pickings in terms of places that cater to us. The mecca of course is Paul's Pipe shop in Flint, but as far as the Detroit area goes, J&R Cigars is the top place for tobacco, but Hill and Hill will offer the most to the pipe collector, but at a steep price.Jim the owner is an acquired taste. He can be condescending, but he does know his stuff and he does tend to grow on you. As another reviewer pointed out, his store brand cigars are fantastic. As another reviewer pointed out, the Hay Market is not nearly as good as Jim will make it sound. At least to my tastes. It is a Vanilla Aromatic, that might be saying enough right there. I will say that he has come a long ways from my first trip back about five years ago. At that time all he had for pipe tobacco were about 5 aromatics that he claimed to blend himself. My last trip there he added a Balkan blend, that is pretty good and a Virginia based aromatic called Danish Slices that I really enjoyed. It is more in line with the European aromatics. Mostly bright Virginias with a touch of honey or something that accentuates the natural sweetness of the Virginia leaf. He has also started carrying some Dunhill and Peterson Tin blends at prices that a Canadian my find to be a bargain. B&Ms can't really be expected to compete with the internet on tinned tobacco and his prices are up there. He also has started carrying some other more popular cigars, but like the other reviewer stated, buy his store brand cigars. they are quite a value for what you get.Now to the pipes. You will see some scrubby estate pipes all over the place at pretty high prices compared to ebay. The magic is if you catch Jim when he has some time on his hands and if you can get him to open the boxes behind the counter. This will be a treat to any hardcore collector. He has all kinds of rare and exotic pipes that are not out on display. I was blown away when he showed them to me before.overall, It is a comparatively good shop for pipers and a good place to sit on the sofa and enjoy a pipe. There just isn't many places like this left. So for that reason it is a four star for me.

If you ask the old man here about cigars he will tell you he has these hand rolled 5 leaf blend and 7 leaf blend cigars. He has them custom made in a five man factory in South America. They are expensive but worth it. They are very strong and you can not smoke them in one sitting. Truly the best tasting and longest burning cigar in the world. Bill Clinton himself has custom ordered these a few times from this shop and mentioned them in an interview years ago. The shop owners main focus is on this one product. He has other more common brands but don't waste your time.If you go here only buy this custom cigar he makes. All the others sit on the shelves too long and get stale because no one wants to buy them when they try his custom one. It really is that good.

Don't listen to the guy who says this is a trash pit. When you walk in you feel like you stepped back into the 70s when pipe smoking was much more popular. I have bought some great pipes from him throughout the years. The place has a nostalgia to it and the haymarket is the best aromatic I have ever smoked. It wouldn't be the same if it was all clean and remodeled . Jim is very knowledgeable with pipes tobacco and cigars.
