Upon entering the bar, a server catches my eye and puts down a napkin and asks what you would like. Good sign! The drinks are low priced and good, you get the feeling most patrons live nearby or have been returning here for quite some time. I came fit to the fish fry on Friday sign outside, so I ordered a cod dinner and a lake perch dinner. Both dinners and a cocktail came up to $24. Impressive cause the dinners were excellent, crispy fresh fish and fries along with a tasty scratch coleslaw. The kitchen staff frying the fish came out to say their fish fry was the best around, and I agree. Portions were good for one serving there won't be any leftover. Come for the fish fry and stay cause you're welcome.

Chick's Bar is the quintessential neighborhood pub. The crowd is relaxed and friendly. The drinks are cheap and plentiful. There's always one game or another on their TV.Also, their Fish Fries on Fridays are legendary with long-time residents of the neighborhood.

Didn't eat any food, but visited for an after-work beverage.Sat for ~15 minutes (being generous here) before anyone noticed me. I kind of had the impression that because I wasn't a regular, nobody would bother to tell me that you have to order at the bar. Being a stubborn mule, I sat at my table and waited patiently.A minute or two before my co-worker arrived, one of the bar patrons asked the bartender if she had taken my drink order yet. She seemed to be shocked to see me and came to take my drink order. Lack of attention to detail. The Killian's on tap was a bargain at less than $2, but tasted a tiny bit funky. My companion liked his Labatt's. I didn't order food, so I can't comment on the quality of these offerings. The place is dark and a bit damp. The bartender, once she realized that our table was occupied, was pleasant. Nobody in the place said a word to either of us except the gentleman who noticed I was sitting there and the bartender.Overall, if I was looking for a place to go every day where people remembered my name, I might make Chick's my neighborhood bar. As someone looking for a brief respite from my daily work grind who doesn't want to hit up a bar every day, this is not the place.Avoid in most circumstances. There are far better bars along this corridor.

Wow, haven't been here in 25 years. Still a great Friday fish fry. Lake perch, shrimp and cod combo dinner and a beer, $12! Best fish fry in Detroit. Can't recommend this place enough.

It may seem odd to give 5 stars to an old neighborhood bar on a Detroit street corner, but after one Friday night fish fry, I was sold. Chick's Bar has apparently been an establishment since the 1940s, and it's definitely got that atmosphere of a true neighborhood bar, where regular customers are treated like family. I don't venture to the city of Detroit very often, but I may have to for an order of the fried shrimp. Not liking seafood, I made the rookie mistake of ordering a cheeseburger on fish fry night. You are supposed to order some sort of fatty, buttery, scrumptiously fried seafood. When my medium cooked burger came to me dead last and looking much more well done than I had ordered, I learned my lesson. My dear friend took pity on me, and offered me three of her fried shrimp, explaining she had plenty to go around. They were so tasty. To be honest, my burger was not bad by any means. It just wasn't cooked the way I ordered it, but after a bite of the shrimp, all was forgiven in my book. Perhaps drinking beer also helped My friends' grandmother who is quite the gambler (go Granny!) was with us that night. See, it really is a neighborhood type bar, where else can you drink with your 23-year-old friends, their parents and their grandmother? So, she got the whole table playing pull tab lotto games. Someone had a $20 winner, but mostly, we just lost and had piles of pull tab tickets scattered across the table. The bar also has Keno for you fellow gamblers. The only downsides to this bar are the location because being in Detroit at night is scary (which is why I fully recommend traveling with a buddy, if not an army, in this city) and that you will reek of fish when you leave. (Tip: You may want to Febreeze your clothing, if you plan to go anywhere else in public afterwards.) I leave you with four words Friday night fish fry!

Food amazing, beer cheap, staff friendly, ambiance comfortable... Literally the perfect local dive bar with a fish fry Friday that may be the best I have ever had... The $6 perch dinner with fries, slaw and bread is as delicious as it is affordable. For the $6 I got 4 large pieces of cod... Blew my mind.

If you love old neighborhood pubs, Chick's Bar should be on your list of places to visit. Their fish fry on Friday is fantastic. The bar has a lot of character and is a great place to kill a little time.

I'm here now and everything and everyone is amazing. Especially the bartender "Marty". Can't wait to come back for the food. I'm sure it's just as good as the service.

The onion rings and the whole chicken wings are delicious and the food is reasonably priced and I must agree with the others even with new owners the Friday Fish Fry is amazing that cod is great. Myself and my family meet there every Friday for fish. Let me add the this bar has been brought to life with fresh new carpeting, clean and many other updates. I've found the staff to be very friendly and welcoming

Chick's was a great discovery. There is brand new ownership but the same regulars that have been coming for years. Really great, down to earth people who make you feel right at home. Their outdoor area reminds me of a classic Austin bar. Can't wait until they get the kitchen back up and going this week. I'm a new regular now!
