"The way this restaurant is packed to the rim had me excited for my random choice to pop in here. There is a small patio outside and that was where we sat since every table inside was full. I ordered the sweet tea, and a trio dinner either catfish, whole wings, and ribs, with mac, greens and yams. And of course an order of cornbread, with honey butter. I love that they provide honey butter but it does cost extra. Every single thing I had was on point, greens had an amazing flavor, yams were great, and Mac was good. My friend had rib tips and said they were great. This place does not disappoint and I cannot wait to come back!"

"I've been wanting to visit SavannahBlue for too long and finally made it today! We walked from Detroit Opera House in a drizzle, totally worth it!! Absolutely delicious dinner with enough for leftovers! They provided cornbread muffins with honey that were delicious!! We both got fried chicken that came with collard greens with ham and candied yams better than I've ever had at any Thanksgiving!! Friend wanted black eyed peas we shared some of it with her taking that home too!!! We arrived about 5p and first table but, over an hour later the place was packed. This place is special and already look forward to going back to try the next item-unless it's time for more fried chicken!!!"

"Some of the best Jamaican food I've ever had. I'm constantly craving the jerk chicken from here and I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often. The seasonings are always on point and the heat level is perfect. The medium portion of jerk chicken is enough to feed two people and still have leftovers afterwards!My only complaint is that the wait time is never accurate. We always show up 10-15 minutes after our order is supposed to be ready and usually end up having to wait longer for our order. The food is definitely worth the wait, I just hope they can improve their process."

"This place was on my list of places to try so when I visited a friend in the area, I surprised him by treating him to a meal here.Counter and booth style seating. with TVs and great late 70s, 80s & early 90s R&B music playing throughout the establishment. We ordered the Fried Catfish Dinner and the Fried Turkey Chops Dinner with 2 sides each (2-Baked Mac&Cheese, Black Eyed Peas, and Candied Yams). The food was Delicious! In fact, the food was so good that my friend order the Fried Turkey Chops dinner to go with the Baked Mac&Cheese and Candied Yams.Great friendly down home service. They really make you feel good about coming in. Don't be surprised if on your way out you hear "Bye... See you tomorrow!"Oh, and I failed to mention, there is a drive thru window for pickups and ordering. I will definitely be back!!!"

"This use to be my go-to restaurant for Vegan cuisine. This Saturday (day before Mother's day), I had a taste for a DVS soul food platter. I placed an order online and made my way to the restaurant to pick up my order. When I arrived, the restaurant was very clean. My order was ready and waiting for me. The order: Soul Platter-BBQ Tofu, greens or kale, macaroni & cheese, sweet potatoes and cornbread for a whopping $23 (quite expensive for a meal the size of a lean cuisine with an extra side). No joke, the to-go plate resembled a lean cuisine meal tray. All that was missing was the clear wrapper on top and a box. The BBQ tofu was over sauced. I thought, what are they trying to cover up? Well, I found out after i bit into a strip of the tofu and nearly chipped a tooth. It was burned to a crisp. I picked up a different piece, it too was crisp and burned. You only get 5-6 small strips with this meal at best and 2.5 were inedible.The Greens were over salted and weren't even a full serving. The sweet potatoes/yams were not a full serving either. They were a bit too sweet and over cooked. The macaroni and cheese (sigh) not the same as I remember when i last visited a couple of months prior. My sides then were appropriately portioned in small containers. I felt cheated this time. The taste was off; with an almost metallic after taste. The beans and rice were good. Not overly salty. I had a full serving of that, of course. The cornbread mini muffin (tears) was overcooked and nearly burned to a crisp. It was very crisp and crunchy when chewed. I understand we are in peri-covid times. It's rough for many businesses. Food prices are sky rocketing everywhere for everyone. HOWEVER, I was so disappointed with the quality of my meal. If I'm charged nearly $5 per item on my plate, I should be served a beautiful and tasty meal that I can enjoy fully. Burned, over salted and under portioned food that I cannot enjoy seated at your restaurant should not cost $23.00.I included a tip on top of the $23 because I support the workers. So when I enter an establishment and get a "hi" while seated and I have to grab my own food...who am I tipping? Even at Little Caesar's my pizza is handed to me for $5!! Pros... You can order online.The restaurant was open. The restaurant dining area was impeccably clean. I lost 2 pounds because I ate only HALF of my Vegan Lean Cuisine! I learned you actually burn tofu! Wtf? I left a tip. Cons... The dining area is closed, and my food was burned.I have to pay more for burned plants to feel healthy! I paid $23 for a Non-Frozen Vegan Lean Cuisine. I'm still hungry. Is this how vegans stay thin? They're open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays because from Monday through Thursday, your Tofu is slow cooking"

This is all nice and all, but after my first experience, don't think I'll be coming back any time soon.Placed an online order, to be picked up later in the day. I got the 8 pcs chicken (mixed), onion rings and twisted fries. I arrived, parked, entered and someone from the kitchen greeted me. I told her that I was here for pickup, told them which platform. Then this dude walks out from the kitchen, looks at the orders on the tables, places two bags on the counter and walks away. Never said, "your are all set" or "here's your order", just placed the bags and walked away. I had to ask if the two bags were my order and if I was all set, simple yes is all I got. Picked up the order, got in my car and drove home. Chicken - they were dried unfortunately. outside was seasoned, but interior of the chicken was bland. Onion Rings - was soggy by the time I got homeTwisted Fries - only thing that I enjoyed eating.Couple observations... - the plastic bags were tightened, which trapped the steam inside the bag, which then made the paper box all soggy... - service was mediocre"

It was our first time. After walking in we were told where to go to the back to dine in.... such a great little area nice new and clean .... not what you would expect from the outside appearance . We all ordered the Alfredo potatoes with crab and shrimp and got various sides as well as both baked and fried tilapia and kool aid ! But I am glad I did!I was in the D with my lil bro finishing up some business and we both decided we were hungry. Not surprising huh? LOL As I haven't really been back to Detroit in a number of years, I let my brother chose the venue as he is there frequently. When he suggested Steve's, I had a brief flash back to the nightmare that was Southern Fires (see my review), but decided I may as well check it out.First impressions - it's tucked between Jefferson & the Detroit river, not far from downtown, in a small warehouse district. It's in a old nondescript brick building with a lone neon sign. Bonus, there's a decent sized free parking lot right across from the entrance. Entering the building, it definitely has an old school, weathered elegance about it. Like in the past it was a "high society" spot.Upon entering we saw the counter. You basically grab a tray, then go down the line choosing your meat, sides, dessert, and drinks then pay. It's a simple straightforward process, but one that is easy to bottleneck if you have either too few people manning it or too many. Luckily we had just missed the lunch crowd so the line was empty and we sailed through. For me and my brother, with waters and no desserts, the total was just over $35 which I thought was a tad high, but he says is typical for a spot near downtown.The Service - was fairly prompt and friendly. I did have to ask a couple of questions a couple of times, but I put that on the server being distracted by a co-worker asking my brother what sides he wanted. The acoustics of the counter area leave a bit to be desired for audible clarity if more than one person is talking. But then, the building wasn't designed for that purpose.The Dining Room - was large and spacious, and clean. High tables, regular tables, and large booths were the choices. There was a large TV playing family shows at a volume that wasn't intrusive. There is a stocked bar, but I don't know when it is available as no one was tending it and it looked "shut down" while we were there.The Food! - the food was fantastic! Maybe we were lucky and caught everything fresh but everything we had was hot, and tasty! I had the rib tips, dressing, and mac & cheese. My brother had the meatloaf, with the same sides. They also add a corn bread muffin which was delicious. Very much home-style cooking & flavor.Overview - Overall it was an enjoyable experience and I will return next time I am in Detroit. From reading other reviews, I would probably recommend avoiding the lunch rush as our experience was nothing like those reviews. Or maybe they just got their act together?"

We ordered a few items and then waited for our goodies to get prepared. "I'm honestly surprised to see such a low yelp rating. I'm an avid cook myself but I go through phases when I don't feel like it, and motor city has improved over the years. They lowered the salt. I hate salty food, that was the old generation that liked things that way. Too much salt can ruin otherwise good food. Here, they don't overdo it. They let you actually taste the food. I like the dressing. Even though it looks plain, it is packed with sage and black pepper, and there's definitely more than meets the eye here. It's moderately moist, although I like mine on the dry side--add gravy--but you can't please everyone. If you're a dressing person, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The chicken is always cooked right. The baked chicken I've had has been salty, but I have repeatedly ordered the BBQ wings which they use open pit, and those are good. The fried wings are good. I think I've had their fried pork chop before. I would say, please watch the salt on the collards. It's gotten pretty expensive, but that's not just them--that's everywhere. You get what you pay for, and they have to make money. The buffet is moderately impressive. They have just about every meat and side you'd expect. The turkey always looks good, though I've never tried it. There is baked fish as well."

The name "bistro", made me feel as though I was possibly judging the location and clientele harshly; and that maybe I should give it a try.I was sorely disappointed and will be a lot less likely to succumb to FOMO.I knew better.The two stars are for the waitress who answered my call and waited on me when I arrived, Portia. (sp)She was very friendly and professional. She even invited me back and told me that I should come when the "mature" crowd hangs out. I guess I'm old...well, I'm definitely mature and like the older crowds, so technically, she wasn't off.Anywho...I can't give any more stars.I'll start with the exterior. I won't beat McNichols down too much, but one has to really watch themselves while driving or walking down this street. I can say this as almost a lifelong member of the neighborhood. I live within a mile of this bar. There is only side street parking as there is a bus stop in front of the bar. The side street parking is mostly unavailable depending on what time you stop here. This corner is usually super busy. It would be best to have a driver to wait in the car if you carryout here.The overall atmosphere of the interior...I could not differentiate the staff from the clientele as it seemed that the patrons and staff were all talking and walking all around the establishment. There was lots of cursing and overall low vibrational conversations going on. Much of which my mature ears could have done without. One woman sat next to me at the bar while I waited, with her chair pushed up against mine, moving me each time she moved. Her conversation was deplorable and loud. I had to get up and move towards the door waiting for my change as Portia took incredibly long to bring.The bar was huge, I would guess it seats at least ten people. There were plenty of tables as well.Speaking of the bar, it wouldn't be my choice to drink here as the bar wasn't fully stocked. The place seemed downright seedy to me. I was thinking that I would only return if the food was super yummy, but after tasting it and comparing the taste to the price I paid, this place is a definite NO for me and anyone else I know who asks me about it.I ordered steak bites (medium), which were more like "steak bits". The meat was overcooked, hard to chew and there were way too many onions.I also ordered lobster mac and cheese and steamed broccoli. The broccoli was good. I wished there were more.The mac and cheese was edible, and would have been fine had I not expected lobster. I couldn't find more than two bites of it.The price I paid for my dinner, $27, was simply not worth what I was served. I don't mind paying top coin for good food, but this meal wasn't worth more than $10-$15.I hate to leave scathing reviews. This place is obviously fine for the customers that frequent it. It's simply not for me."

Music on played during the commercials and I didn't like that part . Wish it was on the whole time.We rode the bull but then it broke down. They eventually fixed it. The food was amazing. The waitress showed excellent service. They were kind and smiled often. wish i knew our waitress name because she was extremely helpful and memorized every order lol. I had a party of 6 at my table but we also had 4 friends in the booth next to us.I order the steak bites dinner with turkey rice and potatoes wedges. The waiter asked for substitutes incase they were out so she brought mac & cheese and greens... indeed they didn't have the sides listed on the website. It was a good time overall. "Friends of ours have been raving about this place for awhile. They are a bit more expensive than some of our go-to places but I don't mind paying if it's truly better product. This is also a bit out of our way drive wise so we did not immediately try it. Finally on a boring Saturday we pulled the trigger.The chicken did not look all that impressive when we got it home. I started eating it and thought hmmm. We got the spicy of course but it was a slow burn. The more I ate it the more I enjoyed it. Not terribly coated, if extra crispy is your vibe this is not for you. The coating was crisp but thin and the chicken, even the white meat, was juicy and flavorful. That slow burn spice was just happiness.We got wedges to go with. Yikes. Holy undercooked meh. Skip them. The biscuits were slightly better but entirely forgettable. No worries though, we just ate more chicken. We will return but we will be sticking to just chicken for sure."

"Gingerberry is a takeout restaurant on the east side. It doesn't look like much but the food here is excellent and made to order. Gingerberry accepts cash only if you order in person. You can also order online. The wait time if you order in person is around 15-20 minutes. I ordered the catfish entree with broccoli and 5 cheese macaroni. The plate was huge and everything was well-seasoned. The macaroni is extra cheesy, and the catfish is crispy with a mild parsley and butter flavor and topped with lemon slices.I'm surprised that there aren't more reviews. It is five minutes away from Grosse Pointe Park and less than ten minutes from Indian Village / West Village. I will be stopping by again soon."

Now the funny thing is that someone referred me to another soul food place that happened to be right across from the By Felecia restaurant. I drove there and noticed the restaurant that I was attempting to go to was closed, although the website of the establishment noted otherwise. So while sitting in my car disappointed, I noticed the By Felecia restaurant, but when I went to google the hours (this was a Sunday afternoon), the hours indicated that the restaurant was closed. About a minute later, I saw someone walking out the restaurant, so I decided to just try my luck and walk into the establishment, and I'm happy that I did!I was greeted by a woman, who I'm assuming is Felecia. She was nice, and explained her menu. She told me that they are usually closed on Sundays, but since she has special requested orders, she opened today. The menu for that day was Turkey Legs, Yams, Dressing, and Greens. I told her I would order that! I'm not a big fan of greens, but I didn't mind trying something new. Once she gave me the order, I kept thinking to myself the bag was very heavy.Once I got home, goodness! She had given me such much food! I literally ate on the food for 3 days, and still ended up throwing the rest out that I didn't eat. The portions were huge!! And on top of the dinner, she gave me an extra side of macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes/gravy. That was just extra. The dinner also came with cornbread, a slice of pound cake, and cup of look aid. All of that for $16.00 was definitely worth it in my opinion! All of the food was very good, nicely seasoned! Felecia also told me about her Seafood Boils that she sells only on Fridays. I definitely will return to try more of her food, and I have already put the word out to my friends that this is a nice hidden gem in the area!"

The black eyed peas all they did was cook them there is no flavor no nothing in them nothing! The Dressing they forgot to add poultry , sage these are things that make dressing taste like dressing they don't use it if so I don't taste it I do taste some salt,the Mac and Cheese was cheesy it wasn't that great but better than the rest. My side yams were Amazing I must say that! The dinner rolls I tasted a little bit they are homemade they are ok but I wanted cornbread as well but it don't matter because the food ain't right! I'm disappointed 38.00 for this food and none of it is seasoned I messed up my leg which is why I ordered this I should have just risked it all and cooked my darn self! "I came in her for one dish only per the recommendation of a friend. That dish was the red beans and rice with cajun sausages. And I have to admit it was pretty tasty. I got a large order because I didn't notice that there was a smaller serving size. I wished that I had gotten the smaller size after realizing it was an option but after tasting it, I didn't mind having the larger portion to eat more later.I was told that their other dishes were tasty as well so I definitely plan on trying more things. The red beans and rice will definitely be a staple though."

"It's interesting that the owner is Arabic and the chefis Arabic / African, I'm not sure how or why that worksbut it does! I've been there 3 times and all of their food is fantastic!!! I usually order online ahead of time for convenience's sake and when I pick up, every time I getget there I'm blown away by the hot food display other food items that are available daily and are not on the online menu. Nevertheless I'm always more than satisfied with the long list of soul food items on the online menu.I especially like the variety of green vegetable choices.You can order Green Beans, Collard Greens, MixedVegetables or Salads. Plus, Baked and Grilled meats,love their Meatloaf, Salmon, Shrimp, Baked Chickenand everything else, their Yams are to die! for. The online ordering is smooth and so is all the staff there,lead by the charming & funny counter person Marlene"

"So let me start off by saying are waitress was amazing! Very bubbly personality and very attentive. Are drinks were never empty and she came to check on us in between serving other tables ( i wanted to start off with something nice). The smell however when u first come in is horrible.. why we stayed to eat ill never know... and it wasn't only us the ppl that came in ahead of us turned around and went right back out the door( a sewage smell?). The food was just not there... the driest chicken (bbq) i ever bit into. My husband wouldn't even eat it and he is legit a garbage disposal, he got the baked which wasn't terrible but wasn't anything to talk about. The yams were amazing! The broccoli and cheese was really salty and not edible. When we complained the women said she needed to take it into the light to see if it was dry lol?! I was like ok as long as u don't bring it back to the table, she never returned and the waitress comped the chicken and we were good with that.. but in no way shape or form will we go back."
