American Coney Island

A Detroit classic. We ordered some coney dogs and we got a chicken tender plate for the kids. Their dogs are good and the whole operation there is quite efficient. They are able to turn out tables pretty quickly.One thing that made my girls smile was when they requested ranch to dip their chicken tenders, they were given a whole bottle of ranch!

Detroit Coney Island Challenge!American was stop #2. Right off the bat once would notice the facility is newer and updated. Plus a larger space.Food took longer at American even though they were not packed. They do yell things here, from dining room through the restaurant and it felt odder than next door because it's more modernized and larger. The island dog was similar but I felt it had a slightly different sauce taste. I can't out my finger on it.Winner: Next door!

Wow!!! So yummy! I was visiting Detroit for the weekend for a family party and my sister's coworker recommended American Coney Island. The waiter was so attentive and funny and super helpful. He told us what's the most popular and recommended what a first-timer should get. We all got the Coney Island Hot Dog and we got 2 chili cheese fries to share. The chili on the hot dog and fries was so darn good! I wanted more! The decor is so nice inside with pictures of the family. It seems like a diner / fun old school place to eat. So much history too. Keep up the amazing work!

The owner is awesome and the food is great. We met som many Seahawks fans. There is so much Detroit history in the wonder business. Its like one of the places you can not say you have been to down town Detroit and not say you tried the food and watched people walk by.

A Detroit landmark! Super fast and friendly service - If you have a bigger group, American def is roomier inside. Soft bun, delicious chili and a dog with the best snap and piping hot fries. Bonus, the ranch with fries is so Michigan I missed it!

Something ain't right, here. Just 45 minutes ago, I'm finding out about the rat infestation next door. Then I watch a video with the owner of this establishment standing her ground, trying to distance herself and restaurant from next door. After seeing this, I decided to give them my business, because I wanted some Coney's. It's just before 6:30 pm and I walk over there hoping to get some dogs. THEY WERE CLOSED! And someone was in there deep cleaning the grill. Something tells me some of the infestation came to this place. Why are you closing early and then doing a deep clean? Will they be open on Jan 28? We'll see.

With American and Lafayette being next door to each other, we visited both places and tried the Coney Dogs at both to see who is the ultimate Coney Dog champion.Spoiler: it's a tie. I know, I know, what kind of competition ends in a tie? That's boring, right? Well honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between the two Coney Dogs. Both hot dogs tasted like the standard mass produced franks and the chili at both places had a very similar color, consistency, level of spice and taste.I didn't try the other things on the menu, but it seemed like American had more options. So if you decide to go crazy go nuts and want to get something other than a Coney Dog, maybe American is your jam then. Also, American seemed to have a brighter and more open interior setup.

When you think about a Coney Island dog you think (or at least I did) of New York...not Detroit.But legend has it Detroit is where these originally came from...and regardless of which city gets credit...American Coney delivers a nice dog.I went with one American and one Coney....the difference being loose meat on the American.Both were nice...but I preferred the original.The dog has nice snap...the chili has a great flavor and the cheese and onions round it off well.If you are in Detroit this really is a spot worth trying!

This was on our list of places to visit in Detroit for their Coney Island hot dog. We stopped by for lunch one afternoon while in the area, the restaurant had the look and feel of a diner. The service was fine, the gentleman took our order pretty quickly but then came back 10 minutes later saying that he forgot what we ordered and asked us again. Food wise, there wasn't anything special about it. The chili didn't really have a taste to it, it just seemed like a regular hot dog to me. The fries weren't that great either, was fairly cold and did not seem fresh. In short, I would have been okay without trying this place. The food wasn't that great in my opinion.

We arrived with the intent of eating here, but saw that there was a little "turf war" going on and decided to do our own taste test. There was a clear winner - and SPOILER ALERT - this was not it. This dog was bland and had no flavor. The staff lacked any sort of interest (or personality really - think afterschool high schooler at work only because they have to be - mom and dad made me get a job, type attitude). And... it was completely empty, save for us. THAT should have been a huge clue. Let's be real - most of us can make a coney dog at home, but that's not really the point. If I'm going to pay for something, I want to at least enjoy it a little. I did not with this one. I want my calorie spend back. not to mention my $4.Skip this and go next door.
