Thunderbird Pies

I'm just gonna come correct on this review and pull no punches.This is the best Detroit style pizza not just in Texas, but in any state in the Union, including Michigan. I'm from the Detroit area and I've had all the local favorites: Buddy's, Niki's, and Loui's. They're all really good. They're not this good, though.Thunderbird Pies makes my favorite pizza on this planet, and I've had 'em all over the world! Seriously, the world. Get the Thunder Mifflin (add ricotta and pesto) and the Honey Bastard (nothing to change). Both are totally top drawer (TTD) and have no equal. I've never had anything less than the most consistently great pizzas from them, whether I'm eating there or at home. I serve Thunderbird Pies to guests who visit us, and they are absolutely run over by this pizza each time. It's a sure thing.Pro tips: If you order to go, throw these pies in the oven once more at 400, wait for the cheese to start bubbling slightly again, and you're good to go. Never hurts to put some added crisp on top. If you like some extra flavor, sprinkle on some parmesan and dip in ranch. You can also apply Momofuku's Chili Crunch for heat. Or you can leave as is. Can't go wrong any way.I've got some left over from last night, and I'm heating it up right now. For breakfast. And I won't apologize for my gluttonous pursuits here in the AM.Bottom line, it's the best pizza I know of. A+ all the way.Thanks, Thunderbird Pies!

I'd just driven down. It's after 8pm. And we have a hankering for Detroit style pizza. We shamefully showed up 15 minutes before closing. They were extremely courteous and helpful. They politely let us eat our meal waaaaay after closing time. The Budd is their original cheese. When trying a new pizza place we have to have the cheese pizza as a standard. Super crispy buttery edges and sweet tangy marinara sauce. Yum! We also tried their pizza of the month: General Tso's chicken and sauce with sesame seeds and Wisconsin brick cheese. On first bite, I laughed because it made me think it was the result what happens when a couple cannot decide if they want Chinese or pizza for dinner. Bam! You get General Tso's Detroit style pizza. It worked! The restaurant was clean and respect for the old school arcades!

Came here late on a Sunday about 45 minutes before closing. The restaurant was completely empty and I ordered a large Luka Brassi for dine-in. We waited for about 25-30min before the cashier came up to us and let us know that they had forgotten to put our order in and were just starting to make the pizza now. They offered us free soft drinks while we waited which was very kind. He was very apologetic! Our food ended up coming out about five minutes after close but they were very kind and did not make us feel rushed as we ate. We still ate quickly and took some of it to go so as not to keep them there too late. The pizza itself was incredible. It had amazing flavor and I love the crunch of a Detroit style pizza. A large was more than enough for two adults to share. I am not sure if this was an error, but it looked like our pizza had sausage instead of meatball on top. Maybe this is just what their meatballs look like? Either way it was delicious so I couldn't complain. The restaurant was super cool inside and had some fun arcade games. I won't be holding the order mishap against them and will definitely be back to try more flavors and some ice cream next time.

I've been to Thunderbird Pies a couple of times and both visits have been rewarding. On the most recent visit I ordered two small pies - the Drip Pan and the S&P 5000. Both were delicious and filling. More than enough for the four of us. Since I ordered takeaway, the only person I interacted with was at the counter. She was friendly and cheerful. Ambiance is colorful but basic. It's a pizza place. Not a place where you linger over your meal by candlelight. But the food is certainly worth it and worthy of return visits. The location takes a bit of getting used to. It's on the upper level of the shopping center at Gaston and Garland Rd/East Grand. Parking is more than adequate and sister store Cane Rosso is right next door.

Never really had Detroit style pizza before, was skeptical but they won me over, it was truly great. Perfect "cheese wall" perfect balance of toppings great light Sicilian style crust. Cheese blend was something called Bric cheese, low moisture mozzarella & white Cheddar. Delicious! Great service, nice ambiance.

I have to admit I am usually not a fan of Detroit style pizza too much dough for my liking. But Thunderbird has changed my mind at least for one pizza. Sausage pizza and the tomato basil were both amazing! Service was great the pizza was piping hot. Great place for families idea games outside seating and good parks

Where has Detroit style pizza been all my life?! I'm a huge fan of a good deep dish pizza and thunderbirds delivers every time! Their crust is perfection, the amount of toppings is never too much or too little and the pizza to sauce ratio is always on point. I tried them out on a whim. I was craving Chicago style pizza and had no idea where to go. I found Thunderbird on doordash and took a leap of faith. They did not disappoint. I like it so much that I actually get in my car and make the 25 min drive just to get a taste of it in its freshest form. Anyone that knows me knows I don't risk my life in Dallas traffic unless the food is LIKE THAT. I almost didn't want to post a review because I don't want anyone else to know about this place lol. Definitely the best Detroit style pizza I've EVER had. This pizza was sooo flavorful. The crunch of the edges was great, the sauce was delicious, the olives paired perfectly with the sauce. The pepperonis were crisp w/ a little crunch. The cheese wasn't overpowering the bread. I added crushed peppers; soooo good. Definitely recommend 11/10

We went to Thunderbird Pies today for lunch (Saturday) and it was fantastic! We like Cane Rossa and Zoli's and since it is the same owner, we though we would give it a try. I wanted to go someplace casual where I could wear tights, and no makeup. This fit the bill. You order at the counter and they bring your order to the table. Plus, only 5 minutes from our house.We got "The Artichokes" for an App and "The Drip Pan Pizza" for a main. The artichokes were so yummy. Crispy little pieces of artichokes w/ a parmesan batter and an underlying taste of lemon. It came with an aioli that was delish. Tart, a tiny bit of spice and mayo based. Wish I could figure out that recipe because I would use it from now on as a dip for any number of things. The pizza was SO GOOD. We are demanding eaters, and sometimes walk away from a restaurant thinking "meh". But, this pizza hit on every level. Firstly, it was a bargain! It is a thick pizza with loads of wonderful toppings. I could only eat half a piece. The sauce was so yummy. It really tasted like fresh tomatoes, not an overly cooked sauce. The toppings were amazing. Mushroom, sausage, soppressata, caramelized onion and roasted peppers. All were the best version of that ingredient they could be! The crust was the perfect "Detroit" style crust, buttery, thick and with those delectable crispy edges. Came out piping hot, and only took maybe 15 minutes.We only could manage 2 total pieces, so we are looking forward to the leftovers tomorrow. We will def be back because we want to try all the other menu offerings. The interior is simple, comfortable and ladies, throw a baseball cap on and you won't feel out of place w/ no makeup. First time trying Thunderbird Pies and it was great! Wonderful staff, great service, and reasonable wait time. Yall, parking was easy which already starts the night at a great note. Pizza and wings were stellar. They also have ice cream which is a great way to top off the night.10/10, will come again!
