On our recent visit to Dallas, the Missus and I decided to catch a show at the Kitchen Dog Theater. We were both were excited to see The Royale, but had no idea how cool the theater itself would be. It's a very intimate setting with not a single bad seat in the house. KDT has a small (donations recommended) bar with a few local beers. Side note...please don't be that person that takes a beer and doesn't bother to throw a few bucks in the jar. My wife and I would be more than willing to see another show here on our next visit to Dallas.

This is such a quaint little theater! I love the intimacy of the space. My husband and I recently saw The Royale and thoroughly enjoyed the show. I like that the general admission allows you to choose your own seats, although there's not a bad one in the house. I also appreciate how they have shows that you just can't see anywhere. If I lived in Dallas, I'm sure I'd see many shows here!

Are you a fan of coffee, wine, art exhibitions, independent theater, quirky people? Then sign up for the Kitchen Dog Theater mailing list and get your booty to one of their productions! The theater is just a few minutes walking from my house, and I always pass it on my way to yoga. I finally made it to one of their Thursday night shows for the most recent production of Edward Albee's "The Goat/Who is Sylvia" (a wacky but sad story line involving a man's love affair with a goat). For those of you who don't know, Albee also wrote "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf." I was very pleased when i walked into the theater because it seemed to be a newly rennovated warehouse space with plenty of seating. Patrons were just hanging out and having wine and snacks in a little cafe area. There was an awesome art exhibit displayed with sculpures made of cigarette boxes and paintings, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the artist. It was just a cool space to hang out in before the show.A few minutes before show time, everyone lines up at the entrance of the theater. Once you get in, it's open seating. It's not very big (maybe 100 seats?) but almost every seat is a good one with no obstructions (ampitheatre style set up). The set design was surprisingly professional. The show was great, and you really get to feel the emotion (and this particular show was VERY emotional) becuase everyone is so close to the stage and the actors. I would just advise you to bring a coat or a sweater because the theater is chilly!I highly recommend this theater, particularly if you're into a more informal experience. You can walk in the day of the show and purchase a ticket, and the prices are right!

In the last month I've delved into the Dallas theater scene by checking out two theater companies that seemed to have good online reputations. Those two companies are: Kitchen Dog Theater in Uptown and Undermain Theatre in Deep Ellum. Verdict: both are huge assets to the Dallas art scene and spectacular at their craft.I had my first Kitchen Dog experience last night. I thought about giving it 4 stars, because I liked the play I saw at the Undermain Theatre better, but the two plays were very different so they need not be compared. And I wanna support the local scene:)PLUS, the play was pretty damned good. We saw The Turn of the Screw, which was a spooky ghost story/psychological thriller set in late 19th century England. It featured two actors in total (our luck - they were amazing). The play was emotionally intense and left me with an unsettling feeling at times. These feelings can only be attributed to the magnificent performances.

Almost through my third season as a subscriber. Definitely an excellent choice. The Hooch and Pooch party is always a blast.

I went to see Wilde/Earnest and had a blast! This play is an adaptation of Oscar Wilde The Importance of Being Earnest to modern times. The whole Cast and Production Staff did an amazing job and the whole play would be lacking without their brilliant individual contributions. I'd like to highlight the exceptional performance of Jenny Ledel (playing Gwendolen) who captured my attention from the moment she came on stage. She is talented and graceful actress and I hope to see her in whatever she does next.

Great, intimate theater with avant garde productions. We saw "In the Next Room" yesterday and were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the acting. The play is quite amusing and it was very well done - check it out!

Kitchen Dog Theater is a playland for the most compelling and avant-garde performers in Dallas. Each production will challenge you and make you think, so don't expect an Annie revival. (I hope they take that as a challenge, and mount a bare bones Brechtian Annie production) In all honesty, you have to support this vital cluster of artists who work tirelessly on their craft and a performance space that fosters such dynamic work.

Sad to say terrible show. Found the theatre people extremely rude when asking us to take our seats which didn't make for a great intro. Scenery was cool however the basically threatened us if we used the bathroom that we would never be allowed back in. Actual content wasn't very captivating. Also disappointing considering I bought a year pass and pregnant friend had to pee in the middle of the show and they refused to let her back in. Was really looking forward to being a regular but I'll never be back.
