Amaaaaazing. Food is almost beyond description. But.... Here goes. The place we wanted to go was closed and Da Nang was there, we were hungry, so we went in. It is highly decorated and festive. It is located in a non descript strip mall but don't miss it. We had the shrimp and pork spring roll and wow. So good and it was huge. We ordered two bahn mi sandwiches and again... wow. Filled to the rim with flavor and texture. The Bread was perfect and the sandwich was so good we scarfed them down. And all for $20. It is a must go place and you will be happy you did.

Stopped Cafe Dore for some lunch and ordered the Bún with chicken and Vietnamese egg rolls for $8.99 if I remember correctly. I was a good size bowl of Bún which came with three crispy egg rolls but a modest amount of chicken. The chicken was tender but it was a little lacking in flavor, especially that charbroil smoky flavor that is common with this bowl of Bún. The egg rolls were quite good and came with a mix of ground pork, glass noodles, and vegetables. The were tasty and had a good crispiness about them. The vermicelli was nice and so were the salad greens, mint, and bean sprouts. I liked the abundance to crushed peanuts in the bowl. They always add nice texture and flavor. Service was alright or should I say, friendly enough, but one thing that really bothered my about this place, is they let or there just happen to be, a gathering of older gents siting right out side the door were heavily smoking while the door was wide open. I did not enjoy sharing my meal with second had smoke. They need to put a stop to that.

Came in today for breakfast since I am craving for banh mi xiu mai. 1 order is pretty good size and tasty banh mi xiu mai. The banh mi is crispy, and smell fresh-baked oven! I think they should put a little bit more chunky tomato to make it less sweet. I also tried their bun oc. It is ok. Not too good but it is also not too bad. The broth is flavorful but very sweet. They did not sautee the escagort with lemongrass so nothing special. The picture show oc buou but the real order comes with the oc huong trang. that's why it does not taste right. Anyway, this place more likely for togo order or for elderly who come to drink coffee, chit chat and play lottery. The tables is small but clean. Background music was playing pre 1975 Golden Music of the South Vietnam. There is big screen TV on the wall that plays CNN news. Overall, our breakfast r good 7/10. I probably come back for xiu mai togo but not bun oc tho.

I was craving bún suông, so once I saw it on Cafe Doré's menu, I was excited to try it out. I ordered takeout, and will admit that I'm glad I did. The vibe wasn't really for me, as I felt a bit out of place; at least based on my visit, Cafe Doré seemed to be a gathering/socializing place for older Vietnamese gentlemen that relaxed, ordered coffee, read the paper, chatted, and played the lottery. The staff was of course super welcoming and accommodating to me nonetheless. Now, speaking to their takeout soup. Generous portions of broth in the bún suông. I really liked the textures in the shrimp paste, although I wished there were more of it (and of protein in general). In general, the soup had decent flavors but was a bit on the bland side. Moreover, I wasn't a fan of the chopped peanuts in their rendition. The peanuts added a strangely out-of-place texture and not much else to the meal.I came here specifically for their bún suông, so I can't speak to much else on the menu. Ultimately, it was good but not great. I'll be continuing my search elsewhere for great bún suông in the area.

I was craving Vietnamese soup and sandwich. I read the reviews for this place several times. I never realized it was in the same plaza where I sometimes get Banh Mi at. So I went over here to place an order for take out. There is a large private parking lot but it gets pretty packed on the weekends. Fortunately I found a spot immediately. I walked in and the only people were some elders who were enthusiastically playing lotto. The worker at the front was very nice and gave me a menu. I decided on a banh mi bo kho (beef stew with baguette on side), a banh mi dac biet (combination cold cut banh mi) with extra pate, and a steamed pork belly banh mi. Also, I had to get a cafe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee, sweetened with condensed milk). He told me ten minutes. I went outside and picked up two tamales from the cart a couple of stores down. I went home afterwards and dug into everything for lunch/dinner. The soup was a smaller portion than most places, but it was filled to the brim with juicy tender beef and carrots, and flavored perfectly. The banh mi had great texture, very fresh vegetables, and a great balance between ingredients. Some places put too much meat, believe it or not, which really throws off the whole dynamic. Oh yeah, the iced coffee. I downed it before my food was even ready. Delicious and strong as gasoline, just the way I like it. I loved everything I ordered and will definitely be returning.

It's Sunday morning at Café Dore. I'm the quietest, whitest and fattest person in the room, the place being otherwise filled with 40-to-80 year-old Vietnamese men. These football fans are watching Green Bay beat Carolina, but not really; they've staked out seats for today's Chargers game, so the TV is background while they chat, drink coffee and snack. The two guys playing co tuong (Chinese chess) at a corner table slam each piece down with a "Snap!," occasionally shouting at each other. I don't think they care for football at all.I was welcomed, then largely ignored, by the guy behind the counter, who took my order, delivered it, then returned to serving his regulars. He was adamant that there's no smoking allowed, pointing to the sign that says so. When I stopped by a month ago, this sign was obscured by two patrons' curling blue smoke. Progress, I suppose.Seated facing the large-screen TV, I'm just in front of the California Lottery station. This allows me to say "hello" to customers who come in for café and a payday. I've got a laptop on my table, which warrants curious glances, but no one seems bothered. Mostly, I'm invisible. Before coming in, I had a breakfast drink, a champurrado from the Tamales Oaxaqueños cart at the end of the parking lot. Now I'm eating breakfast food - Pork Belly Bahn Mi. At least, it's my first meal of the day, and I added a fried egg, so if you don't ask my Mom, it's breakfast. The bahn mi is delicious. The bread is fresh and soft inside with a bare yeasty tang, and its thin, crispy crust holds the bellies, soft-fried egg and vegetables securely. In a weird way, it's like really good pizza. I've eaten a lot of bahn mi, and had thought the best in San Diego were at Á Châu or K Sandwiches, but now I suspect that bahn mi are indeed like pizza, in that cooks have the ability, by slightly changing how they prepare and present the item, to make it appealing in ways unique to their kitchen.Time for hot Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. This is not my usual; I like the iced version, considering it like a coffee milkshake for grownups, but hot coffee cuts grease and egg yolk in the mouth, bits of which this sandwich provides, in a good way.The coffee is slightly bitter, but not undrinkable. I step outside for a smoke, which makes the drink more palatable. My café-mates don't notice my leaving, or my return, except for one fellow who asks if I'm a reporter. "No," I tell him, "I just like the food here, and I like my Vietnamese friends." He smiles, gratified that I've figured out what the room already knows.***************************************************Tamales Oaxaqueños: http://www.yelp.com/biz/tamales-oaxaquenos-san-diego?hrid=-KqP2nSbbiosi_DPKxBlngÁ Châu: http://www.yelp.com/biz/a-chau-san-diegoK Sandwiches: http://www.yelp.com/biz/k-sandwiches-san-diego

This area is foreign to me but my MIL knows the navigation. She bought the tit nuong from here- seasoned but raw - for at home consumption. Apparently you can purchase by pound and lord it makes for delicious eats at home. They have two variations: one that is the meat chopped and pounded into an almost meatloaf, and one that is the meat akin to korean bbq. They do a great job seasoning the meat and making it so tender. Wonderful on the grill or cooked in the oven. The meatloaf tit nuong variation was something new but highly desireable. Writing this brief review to ensure I have the place bookmarked and ready to try the dine-in in the future. Based on the meat I've tried, I highly recommend any of their tit nuong / pork dishes. We made bun (rice noodles) at home for great eats. I imagine their sandwiches and other plates being great too!Recommended specifically for the Vietnamese pork. Yum!
