Cowboy Star

Cowboy Star has definitely become my fave spot for filet mignon in San Diego. Always cooked and flavored perfectly. Same with the mashed potatoes and broccoli accompaniments. I get the bordelaise sauce with my steak and my friend gets the blue cheese, both super good. Their Mac n cheese is my second favorite, next to Born and Raised. Waygu carpaccio is devine. Buttery meat, bright flavor. Rolls with butter and salt are delicious. Cold carrot dish is pretty good. Espresso martinis are good. Love the ambiance and it is always great service while there. Disclaimer, there is an $8 charge to split a plate here. Overall, love this place. Definitely a preferred spot for steak houses in SD.

This is my second visit to Cowboy Star, and while the first experience was excellent, this recent visit was disappointing. I ordered an 18 oz bone-in ribeye, requesting it to be cooked medium-rare, but it was served blue rare. When I asked for it to be cooked to medium-rare, the server apologized and promised to bring it up to the correct temperature. However, when the steak was returned, it was well done and chewy.I informed the server, who then brought the manager to our table. The manager questioned, "Is that chewy to you?" and when I expressed my dissatisfaction and said I did not want the steak anymore, the manager responded, "If we cooked it wrong twice, it will happen again." This response was not only unprofessional but also dismissive of my concerns as a customer. The initial service from the waiter was attentive and professional, and I appreciated her efforts to rectify the situation. However, the manager's attitude was disappointing. Instead of taking responsibility and offering a solution, the manager's dismissive tone and lack of empathy made the experience even worse. As a customer, I expect a higher standard of service, especially from a restaurant with such a good reputation. The quality of the food and the customer service should reflect the restaurant's standing. This experience has made me reconsider returning to Cowboy Star, and I hope they can address these issues to ensure other customers do not have a similar experience.

My husband and I came here on a Friday night, unfortunately their reservations were booked for the weekend when I checked so we came as a walk in. You weren't able to get a table but could wait for the high bar. The hostess said it was about a 45min wait and we were fine with waiting. We did wait about 50 minutes but could order drinks and appetizers.The ambiance was old town country relaxing western vibes. The craftsmanship in the drinks were superb we had a mule, a gin drink, and an old fashion. While waiting in the small 4 chair waiting area Arturo the bartender came up to us and asked if we wanted to order small bites which we really appreciated because the hostess did not mention we could order there. We had the kabob skewers and the sliders which came with 3 different meats. I would order both again. We still had to wait for seats and they were sitting singles at the bar if a spot opened up, the hostess came over to ask if we still wanted to wait since we ordered appetizers and we said yes, another 20 mins and we got sat. Once we sat Lalo helped bring our waters and he was on top of filling the waters grabbing us utensils and napkins, his service was great! Arturo was our server/bartender and recommended the ribeye and wagyu. Honestly the ribeye was way better than the wagyu my husband ordered. Would not pass up an opportunity to eat the RIBEYE! The steaks are already served with mashed potatoes and broccoli, wasn't a big fan of these sides but still good. We got a Cesar salad and the bone marrow as sides they were excellent. The bread that comes with the bone marrow was so so deliciously buttery and crunchy, YUM! The chef also gave us some caper spoon dish it was really yummy and we appreciated the gesture, thank you CHEF!Overall, love the vibes of this quaint western steak bar. The meat is quality and the service is impeccable. The bar also moves like a bottle Ferris wheel which was so unique. They also have wireless chargers on the bar and hooks for your purse below. The attention to detail is superb. My husband and I agree the servers, food, ambiance is a 5 but for the lack of communication from the hostess or making us feel like we should leave after appetizers we docked a star. I would definitely recommend Cowboy Star thou and we hope to come back and try other plates!

3.5 stars only because I was served raw shrimp and as I'm typing this review I'm just thinking about how I would've had food poisoning had I not noticed and ate the shrimp...We were served a surprise, complimentary amuse-bouche that was the perfect start to our meal, I wish I had more of it. I love how the steak here is served with thin green beans and very smooth and well seasoned mashed potatoes; most steakhouses the steak is served a la carte, so it was perfect. The wagyu skirt steak was one of my favorite steaks I've ever had, it was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the flavor was delicious. The bread and butter is $9 but very worth it. The cesar salad is a big portion and the homemade cesar dressing is light and refreshing. The beef carpaccio has tons of flavor but the price is a bit steep. The cocktails are good and strong. The Mac & cheese was a little chalky and could've been better, but it was a huge portion. I was served slightly overcooked shrimp. I sent it back and was served undercooked shrimp. I bit into it and spat it out immediately. I've never tasted anything like that in my life. I shined my phone light on it and could see gray lines in the center of the shrimp. It was raw. Complimentary scoop of strawberry chocolate chip ice cream with a piece of chocolate that read 'happy birthday' which was a nice touch and ending to our meal. The ice cream was so good, I need a pint of it in my freezer at home!Good customer service. Everything came out at the perfect time, staff were attentive, and drink refills were prompt. I won't be back but I'm very glad I posted on a Facebook group asking for steakhouse recommendations and dozens of people suggested Cowboy Star.

If you haven't been to Cowboy Star take this as your sign that you need to go! After a successful Padres game we decided a steak dinner would be the cherry on top for a perfect day. It was on the late end of the night but still about an hour before closing and we were able to grab 2 seats at the bar, fun fact did you know that they have cell phone chargers built into the bar? Always a convenient thing to have! We each ordered a drink and decided we weren't super hungry so we shared the 17oz ribeye which was plenty for the both of us. The ribeye came with broccoli and mashed potatoes, they were the most perfectly whipped and melt in your mouth potatoes! We also got a side of the mac n cheese because we saw someone else order it and knew we had to try it! Everything was perfect from start to finish - I absolutely love coming to this spot and will continue to come back!

I recently dined here and I gotta say I had a great experience. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Nice ambiance and I love the chic yet western-ish decor. We wanted to try the whole menu but we ended up ordering the wagyu skirt steak which was one of the best steaks I've had. The wedge salad with a thick house cured bacon slice which was big enough to share, the Caesar salad, macaroni and cheese, roasted bone marrow with grilled baguette, 14oz ribeye steak. Filet mignon, the twice baked potato and we had to have the Cowboy star Parker rolls bread service with soft whipped butter. We also tried their C1 steakhouse and Bearnaise sauces. Everything was great . I will be coming back for more of the Wagyu skirt steak and to try other food items on their menu.

Absolutely excellent! I might have a new favorite steak! We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and were sat down early. The waiter was friendly and funny and drinks and apps came out quickly. My water was never empty and I loved the dark classy atmosphere. The Ribeye I ordered was unbelievable. The crust was perfect and it was definitely not over cooked. The plate kept it hot and continued to warm up through the meal and never got cold. Already looking forward to our next visit!

Such a beautiful quaint place for dinner dates or dinner in general and even just for having some drinks out spot... The food we've experienced so far, like the bread and whipped butter was excellent..and the steaks we ordered which was the 18oz t-bone steaks were great actually......:until I found a hair in a bite I had, and no doubt with instant disgust, I lost my appetite. I then realize the cooks, which you can visibly see, do NOT wear hair nets... so that's a sure factor as to how a strand of hair can end up in my food... Our server did offer if we wanted a new steak but to be honest, the wait went worth it as knowing it to be a steak house, they take great time into making things 'perfect', and again no doubt the steak was delicious but then the hair popped up in my bite.........We did get a steak comped but there's honestly no satisfaction from it being so... Me and my man were celebrating Mother's Day out for me, and I wasn't full yet at that point..Again wasn't full still but to wait for a remake was out of the question. I'd just like to say, they need to be more careful or wear more proper wear with and when handling food.. I had ask our waitress "do you guys not wear hair nets in the kitchen" and she asked if I wanted to speak to the manager and I said yes but still waited a bit longer than expected to be able to but was irritated moreso waiting hen just got up and left.. Waited for our Uber out front and looked back into the restaurant and seen our waitress with the hostess and maybe it's just me but they all then were staring and giving looks like our waitress was speaking to them about my unsatisfactory visit and was judging.. I'm not a bitter or pity person especially when it comes to my food... smh...Then the manager seen us once before and then I seen him again through the glass and I'm sure he noticed my upsetting energy..I'm sorry but I have to say that they didn't go 'out of their way' to ''make the customer happy'....Just watch what you eat there because it is a tight kitchen space and they're feeling hot and not wearing hair nets, it could happen to your food too! Happy Mother's Day to me.... But at least the padres beat the dodgers in this game series ! Currently heading to the next place to celebrate and hopefully fill my belly up with better serviced food...

It's giving 5 stars. Absolutely amazing. I do not have ONE suggestion to add to this place.Get the bread!! Probably the fluffiest roll I've ever in my life. The butter that comes along with it OMG. Salad, YUM, love that they played it for both me and my husband to share.Ribeye-- FANTASTIC and the peppercorn sauce- I am obsessed. CHEF PLEASE TEACH ME. Drinks were so good and actually cheaper than most places these days. I WILL BE BACK SOON

Never ever do yelp reviews but this place was perfect and service was out of this world. All the servers are really on it. Everything we requested was met with excellent customer service. Food was amazing. Came here for my girls birthday and they made her feel extra special. We had the ribeyes and they were huge and the Brussels sprouts and Mac and cheese were insanely good. Everything about this place screams top quality service as food. Definitely will come back
