1500 years old!!! Park personnel maintain the area. The Big Tree has a fence around it to help preserve it. The trees are unique in structure as the branches are very close to the ground and make it tempting to want to climb!!

Amazing Live oak tree! https://tpwd.texas.gov/newsmedia/releases/?req=20160208aFrom above site:Big Tree is an ancient live oak tree, estimated to be over 1,000 years old. A celebrated icon of the Texas State Parks system, the tree has been used by many generations for weddings, picnics, thousands of photographs and meditations. Legends say Big Tree was even a hanging tree, a pirate's rendezvous and a ceremonial site for the Karankawa Indians. In 1966, Big Tree was named State Champion Live Oak by the Texas Forest Service. That same year, it was also named National Champion Live Oak and was believed to be the largest live oak tree in the nation. It measured 44 feet tall, with a circumference of 35 feet and a crown that spread 90 feet.

Stunning! No one know how old this tree is, but I read it is many centuries old. If you're in Rockport/Fulton area, this is a definite must see! There are several other big trees in the area, but only one "The Big Tree". You can walk under and by the other trees, but the main tree is protected by a wooden log style fence. It's a little scary walking under the other trees as their branches are exceptionally heavy. Imagining the massive weight of each limb is intimidating. There is no admission fee, but they do have a donation box available. All proceeds go to "The Big Tree". Consider donating to this beautiful giant oak to preserve its legacy. I truly enjoyed seeing this living gem.

Wonderful old tree, worth the drive out to see it. It's amazing that a tree can live that long. If only the tree could talk and tell it's story.
