Tables were big and the service was great!
A great Star of Texas marks the outside of the building, a good background for photos, and, an easy landmark to find.

Fabulous small town restaurant with authentic Mexican food. The owner's sister is the cook and does a great job. Prices are reasonable and the owner has awesome stories to keep you entertained. I had beef chalupas and they were yummy!

Very hot and very fresh chicken fried chicken, perfectly spiced and cooked. Gravy seems homemade. Service lacks in the friendly department but she was thorough. Unassuming decor, but guests were cleaning their plates. I will revisit.

We took a chance the place was out dated then again welcome to Falfurrius Tx. But to our surprise the best enchiladas i have tasted in a long time. The texas star special also has excellent carne gusada with the enchiladas. Awesome...

We stopped at this place on our way out from the deer-lease. It's OK, I had the chicken fried steak with a mash potato and the steak was good but I got the feeling the majority of the food was from either a can or microwaved, not just from my food but everyone else's as well. The waitress was nice, but we ordered coffee with cream (it was still morning) and the coffee wasn't fresh and they were stingy with the creamer.

The Gonzalez offers a great local flavor of S. Texas with a lot of charm and hospitality in a well laid out of plan for enjoying the food with family and friends. We were served water and chips quickly upon being seated, and, the menu was very extensive with Tex-Mex dishes. We have a few people, so, there were several entrees ordered, and, they all were presented nicely, and looked very appealing. The wait staff was friendly, and, checked back frequently to fill water and tea glasses, and, to see if we needed anything else.We enjoyed meeting some friends; the table space was excellent, with no seating too close so conversations could be heard easily. The interior was decorated with some great historical places, and, it even had a nice bench outside for waiting. All in all, Start of Texas Restaurant is a very unique South Texas location to visit when traveling U.S. Hwy 281.

I'm by no means a picky eater, but the enchilada plate I had was the worst I've ever eaten. The rice resembled oatmeal, the refried beans were definitely canned, and the enchiladas were mushy. The plate had a crispy taco that was dripping with grease. To top it off the meat had a rancid flavor. Our food was out within 5-10 minutes on a plate that must've been heated in hell!!! Everything was bubbling and pretty much nuked. My companion hardly ate anything and told the waitress he didn't like the food. She asked what was wrong with it and he proceeded to explain why. Any reputable restaurant would've removed the plate from the bill; they did not. I will say the chips and salsa were decent. To top everything off, the service was lackluster to say the least. I will NEVER go back!!!!

NEVER AGAIN!!! DONT GO THERE!!! As soon as we walked in at 7:30 a lady started turning off the open signs. They close at 8 not 7:30. Our food order was taken, half and full order of chicken fried steak. Food was brought to us but we never saw anyone after that. My food tasted so bad. I had one bite of it and left the rest on the table. Told the lady that I didn't like it and she didn't say anything about it and still charged me for it.... Terrible service and terrible food. Went next door to Whataburger afterwards. Never again!!!! Telling everyone about this restaurant!! If I could put no stars on it I would. How is this place still open!!!

Gotta say this place was highly disappointing . Our server who's name isn't even worth knowing was rude from the start and as somebody who's not from this city she didn't explain things well. We were told several times that they couldn't do this or couldn't do that. Food was ok, but they told us they were out of small plates and then another group got small plates . They charge for to go tea and don't allow substitutions . Just needs a lot of work

We came into the Star of Texas Restaurant for the 1st time we seated ourselves then we were greeted by the very nice owner, he explained some of his delicious dishes that they freshly prepare.. I ordered the Chimichanga and husband ordered Enchilada plate. My dish was excellent, best Chimichanga I have ever had, Husband enjoyed his dish also.. We got a treat by the sweet owner, he gave us a little bowl of the Carne Guisada to try, oh my was that delicious!!! Next time we come through most definitely we will stop here the only problem is I won't know what to order all great tasting!!

Came to this place after a Saturday cross country meet today - we arrived at 10:30 and saw online that they opened at 11- we were totally fine with waiting till 11 outside - a worker opens the window and yells that they don't open till 11 or 11:30 .l( very rudely) I asked which is it (knowing we were ok to wait for 30 min but not an hour... ) she then yelled out that the sign says 11 but none of their food is ready - so it might be 1130 she just doesn't know - I totally understand informing us--- but she was very rude. I had a group of 11 to bring business in a small town restaurant- learn some customer service lady
