As a group of eight, we make the road trip to Winchester, Texas about once per month to eat at Murphy's Steakhouse. The last 2 visits, I have had the 10 or 12 ounce ribeye steak, medium rare with baked potato, the salad bar, and incredible fried mushrooms. My wife had a chicken fried steak as large as her plate, over half of it going home for lunch the next day. The service was wonderful, and I have to say that the ribeye steak was as good as any steak that I have eaten in the finest of steakhouses. It is definitely worth the drive to go to this rustic old building for an amazing meal. You will not leave hungry!

Ok, I'm the shmuck that orders seafood at a steakhouse so keep that in mind... seafood platter was good for deep fried. Sweet potato looked like a **** under low light, but was actually good with their whipped butter. Generous portions. Squash salad was a pleasant surprise.Service was great, coffee cup did not stay empty long.Had a taste of the steak: probably merits a 5 rather than just the 4 star I put here for my meal. Next time I'll get steak.

It had been years since I have been here and decided to make the drive this last weekend.Before I dig into the review I want to point out that they were short staffed and I have never seen a more hard working group of people as I did on Saturday night. Kudo's to everyone for making it happen.The Salad bar was a bare bones bar. We found it difficult to access the dressings, having them way in the back of the bar and the low sneeze guard made it impossible to access them. Having access to the other side of the bar would have helped greatly. I ordered the 10oz. ribeye and my guest ordered an 8 oz ribeye. Both were cooked to perfection.The quality of the cuts were horrible. The 10 oz had approx. 2 oz of untrimmed fat on the point and the steak was difficult to cut (sinewy), I had to pull out my pocket knife to cut the steak. The 8 oz also stringy and tough. Not sure who the purveyor is that they are purchasing from, but I would consider reevaluating them.The upkeep of the restaurant or the lack of. The concrete floor was dirty and grimy. Please hire a service to power wash the floors. If in doubt look at the toe plate under the waitress station. That alone will turn your appetite. One can only wonder if the kitchen is any cleaner?And then to top it off I waited 5 minutes at the cash register for them to take my money. Urgh!I am really disappointed in this place.

My husband and I have went out here twice in the past two months and both times we were ignored by the servers! Today we walked in and sat at a table for ten minutes, three servers walk by and looked right at us and just ignored us! A couple of men walked in and were attended to right away. This place needs to evaluate their staff''s performance and the way they run their business. Totally unacceptable. We will not be going back and will be telling anyone who asks us about this place that they should refrain from going there because they will likely walk out hungry.

There is a LOT of food. Almost all meals come with beans, salad and breadstick, and a choice of sides that range from sweet potato to wild rice to seasonal veggies. You can see the list in the menu pic attached. Small Scallops with Wild Rice - 7/10 my scallops were lukewarm at best. They were perfectly cooked though and the wild rice did need some salt. Almost everything needed a little bit more salt. But it was good. Small Chicken Fried Steak with Baked potato - 3/10 My dad said everything was cold. The waitress was nice enough to take it off the bill.My mom ordered a glass of wine but that never came out and the waitress took that off the bill too. So service was good based on the fact that she took care of our problems and was very sweet.The biggest downside is that the heater wasn't on at the back of the restaurant, you can see the temp on the outside, and it wasn't showing a temp. So the majority of our time we were freezing. When we walked through the rest of the restaurant to leave, it was warm. So our eating experience was not a comfortable one. That's the 1 star off. We definitely want to come back and try it again. There's a nice selection to choose from too.

It's a bit of a hunt to find this place east of Bastrop, but so very much worth it.The environment is very homey and cozy, if a bit on the dark side. You might call it intimate. At the time I visited in late summer, tables were still spaced for pandemic distancing, but I can imagine that will tighten up over time.Steaks are GINORMOUS, and--compared to Austin prices--really, REALLY inexpensive. And good! You don't give up any quality. Sides were also very tasty, too. And, while you don't ever doubt you're in a fancy-ish restaurant, the desserts are visible for display, much like an old-fashioned diner would do.I recommend you spend the time and seek this place out for a relaxing country dinner.

I guess this place is a post office or part of a post office. Kind of a cool older building. The inside reminds me of an old saloon. We got the fried pickles and 6oz rib-eye with fries , salad, and beans. Im pretty sure their scale is broken because that steak was definitely bigger then 6oz. Well worth the price. Shout out to our waitress she was great and gave my son a little vanilla ice cream.

We have been to Murphy's over a half a dozen times in 2023. Our first few times were amazing but subsequent visits became more and more disappointing. Table service is good when you get any attention. The worst part is that they no longer know how to cook a steak. The last two visits we had to request a re fire on everyone's steak. Two were under cooked and one was over cooked. I have heard that ownership has changed, that could be the problem.

The salad bar and bean bar was good. The service was ok just not enough help. But the waitress was friendly. The 6 oz ribeye had great flavor but it was full of fat and sinew so it was hard to cut and stringy to eat. All 3 of us that got a steak at the table agreed that the flavor was good but the cuts of meat were worthless. We took them home as dog food. We probably won't go back because of the drive. When we order steak we want flavor and quality of meat. This was not both!We loved the history of the building but we were there for great steak.
