Great local and longtime Mexican restaurant near the Strand and UTMB. Customers seemed like regulars. Service was excellent and fast during breakfast. I ordered a migas plate and it was delicious. $1 extra for cheese but still cheaper than Austin prices. From what I can tell, the place has been open for about 19 years but it seems much older - in a good way! I can't wait to go back to try it for lunch!

Don't be fooled by the exterior, this is hands down the best Mexican food on the island. My absolute favorite lunch spot. $8.25 for two giant chicken tostadas, rice & the best charro beans. The customer service is always wonderful. The employees are so nice & prompt. There's parking or street parking.

When we're in Galveston and want Mexican food, this is our spot. It's an unassuming no-frills type establishment that just serves really good food. And they do it consistently. Service is always friendly, always patient and helpful when you're deciding on food, and always quick with the chips and salsa refills. Mom is a vegetarian and she loves the crispy guacamole tacos. Dad and brother swear by the beef fajitas. Seriously, check them out!

I'm pretty sure that I've found my favorite Mexican/Tex-Mex joint on the island -- after only one visit. This place is a dive. But clean and fun. The staff here are courteous and efficient, at least when we patronized the place on Sept. 19, 2020. Parking is fairly easy, especially considering the available customer parking across the street. The food ... Oh my, it's good!Warm tortilla chips and cold salsa are complimentary. Be careful though. The house salsa is on the verge of being addictive. Though I didn't taste (or see) any cilantro -- which is usually a must for me -- the mix of tomato, onion/garlic and heat really get there for the pesos. It's a combination of tang and bite that kept me wanting more. My wife ordered an a la carte chicken mole enchilada and they brought her two of them (one was on the house). The mole is a little sweeter here than at many other places, and it is worthy. I ordered the Mix Plate, as such combos can give one an idea of several recipes on a single plate; I also ordered a pastor gordita just because...Rice and beans here are pretty average, but not in a bad way. The crispy taco was phenomenal for two reasons: First, the meat is seasoned perfectly and there was nary a drop of grease; Secondly because there was twice as much filling as one would get anywhere else. Same with the beef enchilada. The bean/lettuce/cheese tostada was also a wonderful combination of warm thick beans and cool crisp lettuce atop a nicely browned tostada shell. And then there was the gordita. The wonderful gordita.First, shame on that national Mex chain for introducing its own inaccurate version of this dish to millions of people. La Mixteca, unlike the chain, gets it right by using masa (instead of wheat flour). Furthermore, it's done authentically here because it resembles a thick pancake that's been sliced just enough to pack with wonderful fillings. The crisp fluff of the masa is downright Heavenly. Add to that fantastically seasoned pork and some cool lettuce and cheese, and you have a dish worth traveling for. A couple of things... This place takes credit cards/Apple Pay (they charge a little extra, based on the sign I saw at the counter), and they don't bring the check to the table. Just finish your meal and head to the counter. Prices are more than fair, particularly considering the high quality and portion sizes.

This restaurant is a must when you are in Galveston! I forgot to take pictures! But the food is delicious! The waitresses are so helpful and fun. The building is authentic and feels like you're at a family business. We come here every day for lunch when we come down for the Lone Star Rally!
