Review for playground only!We went to the library, and the Park of Roses, and this playground was sort of next to the library. I thought maybe it was at a school, but nope, at the rec center. Plenty of parking out back, of course. And a nice big playground.Baby K loved it. Slides, climbing stuff, etc. Plenty of benches for parents. The library next door for AC/potty/water breaks. Shade! No long walks for tired parents from the parking lot! We both enjoyed it.

Apparently to use this facility you have to rent it. At least that's why they told me when I went in today to use the facility.

This year I registered for and took a beginner's yoga class. The instructor's goal was to have us practice yoga on a daily basis and incorporate it into our lives. My goal was to revisit yoga and decide whether or not I wanted to pick it up again. The staff was helpful in getting me setup with a membership card. I never got to explore the entire center but it looked like it was always full of people on weeknights. Kids were taking wrestling and tumbling classes, people were using the weight room and my small class filled up the community room.

Bargain-basement cheap and yet good quality is how I would describe the Whetstone Community Recreation Center classes I have taken. The first class I took was T'ai Chi, which, if you haven't tried T'ai Chi, struck me as mediation in motion. The class only cost $29 for 7 sessions. And I felt that the teacher was very knowledgeable with many years of experience. Speaking of meditation, I also tried the rec center yoga class, but felt it wasn't what I was looking for. Having come from years of tutelage under a teacher I affectionately refer to as the "Yoga Nazi" who had a background in occupational therapy, the rec center teacher was way too new-agey and easy on her students for my taste. But another former student of the Yoga Nazi was all too happy with this "yoga lite" experience. If the T'ai Chi class was bargain basement cheap, the Zumba/SalsaJazz 500 Calorie Burn and Adult Beginning Tap classes would have to be garage sale clearance, if there is such a thing. They are just $15 and $10, respectively, for 7 sessions. Yes, you read that right. But, I don't mean to dwell on the cost at the expense of the quality -- these dance classes are a hoot and so are the teachers. While the teachers are experienced and know what they're doing, they stress having fun over getting too caught up in doing the exact right moves. I'm thankful for that because I've learned that monkey see, monkey do ain't so easy. Not only are the classes challenging, but the Zumba/SalsaJazz kicks my butt into high gear. (Or one might say, is quite the workout, hence the "500 Calorie Burn" in the class title.)While I can't vouch for the rec center's other services, I've been very happy with the classes. And did I mention they're way cheap?

I started coming to the Whetstone Community Center regularly for Pilates class with my friend. You can not beat the prices of the fitness classes offered here at the community center. My Pilates class set me back $28 for 6 weeks. There are some places where one Pilates class might cost that much. The instructor is really helpful and doesn't mind explaining moves to a noob like me. I want to sign up for more classes because they are all great prices. The actually facility is a little older, but that doesn't bother me. There are a couple nice gyms and there are always people playing basketball when I go over. There is a little weight room and there is a game room. It's conveniently located in the middle of Clintonville and right next to the library and Park of Roses, so I can workout and then visit my other 2 favorite places in my neighborhood.

There are so few things for young children to do at this Community Center. If the gym is open they don't want you to play in it. There use to be a game room but that was taken out. Once I waited for 10 minutes for thtee staff men to answer my question at the desk. They were in the back office laughing about something they were watching on one of their phones. I do no recommend this facility.

The Whetstone Community Recreation Center is where I go on a weekly basis to get fit. For $30 for the entire season (May-Aug) you have access to the fitness room, which isn't huge but it has just enough equipment to get the job done. Its never crowded like a regular gym, there is a tv and AC as well. I think it's pretty much perfect. There is also a game room equipped with an air hockey table, which is -AWESOME-, a couple of pool tables and a ping pong table... and it's free. They also have a ton of art, craft and fitness classes that are either super cheap or free. If you live in Clintonville and you haven't been in the rec center yet - swing by. It's worth checking out

The Whetstone rec center used to be old, decrepit, falling apart, and full of vaguely gross nooks and crannies. It is no longer. The rec center has been rebuilt in the most splendid manner possible. I am honestly very surprised they did as well as they have. I am seriously loving the windows. I can't wait until its officially open. Maybe by that time I can figure out how to categorize this place.
