It's surprisingly difficult to find a good butcher these days. Al's Meat Market (would make a good name for a night club) isn't a great one, but it is a good, solid butcher shop and it does serve up some fine cuts. In terms of steaks I've only opted for New York Strips from Al's so far (been there 5 times in total). The quality is good (Choice -- Prime is the highest grade, followed by Choice and Select in that order). They do have very good store-made bratwurst and side dishes. The staff is very very friendly and professional, and there is a nice assortment of wines at good prices compared with Kroger (as you can see my standards are not that high in terms of wine).

I really should be only giving one star. However, they get two because they have a large selection of hot sauce and wine. I've also ordered chickens from them before, 10 to be exact. The reason I am so dissatisfied is, I was flat out lied to. My friends and I are opening a brewery within the next year and a half and we hold monthly food/beer tastings. We're trying to find local companies to source all of our meat and vegetables through. We are trying to use local, organic Ingredients in all of our food. The last time I ordered, I was reassured that my chickens came from Amish county and were organic. This time, when I called Al's and asked if their beef was free range or grain fed, John, told me that the beef was grass fed. When I asked if he knew the farmer, he told me yes!!! I bought $70 with of rib eye roast! I felt I was being led to while we were on the phone, his voice just didn't seem right. On the day I was scheduled to pick up my roast, I asked to speak to someone in charge. A very nice lady came to the counter and I asked again. "Is your beef grass or gain fed? Is it butchered locally or does it go through a processing plant?" She was honest and told me that, in fact, the beef IS grain fed and is processed and packaged in a Columbus processing plant. I informed her that I had been lied to and she didn't seem to care one bit. She didn't try to offer anything, not even an apology. I understand that this may not be a big deal to most but we are trying to do something different here. We will be bringing quite a bit of business to our community and companies like Al's who lie to their customers, deserve no part in that. So, if you are looking for local, free range, antibiotic free, amonia free meats, this is not the place for you.
