The Rock Face at Lost Burro
Absolutely breathtaking.
This is the "office"
Dirt road heading over the creek to the tent area. Our tent was set up about 100 yards to the right tucked up next to the trees.
This was part of the camping area

Don't read any of these one star reviews. We have been coming here for the past couple of years, when our other camping spot we went to was no longer available. And we have never been happier to have been recommended the Lost Burro. The Lost Burro is a beautiful campground. The rock face that you see from each spot is absolutely breathtaking. Bobby has always been very accommodating whenever we go up there, and always making sure we are always good and taken care of. Everyone is always nice and willing to chat, we never have once felt unsafe or wary of leaving our spot alone. And everyone is glad to help whether it comes to getting ice, water, or anything else. And don't get me started on how incredibly cheap the fire wood is. The spots are always clean, and well kept. The playground in the middle of all of the tent spots is a little run down and old, but the kids couldn't be happier to have somewhere to play. The bathrooms have a shower, with warm water, perfect after a long day camping. They have a bunch of tent spots, even some with electricity, there is never any trash left at the spots, and even the fire pits look cleaned out. The roads are well taken care of, for dirt roads. And the place is so liked, people even decided to move in permanently. A side addition to the campsite is how close you are to Cripple Creek. There is so much we like about this place, that even we think that the wifi and the electric outlets up by the office is too much for camping! And we will happily be headed up there again this year! And I am sorry to say that if you're going to complain about how the wifi doesn't reach your campground, or how sometimes the bathrooms can be a little smelly, then you shouldn't even be camping.

This was a great campsite! Very friendly staff!!! Dogs welcome but need to be on a leash the whole time-just keep that in mind.Plenty of space in between camp sites so that you didn't feel like you were camping with strangers. The spot we had was a good size and was able to fit our whole party into one site instead of two (7-10 people). Firewood delivery, $20 for a whole tracker full! Approx 36 logs. They sell ice and other items at the main office. They also have showers and bathrooms up by the main enterance. Beautiful spot! Can't wait to come back!

When we drove up to the trailer that housed the office, I felt like we were on ground that once housed a hippy commune! The place is beautiful, rustic, and secluded, but it does have a setup like a tent "community" with all tenting areas surrounding a communal open meadow with a playground and additional picnic tables on the open grass. The RVs are on the other side of the creek from the tents (the office side), so we didn't hear any noise at all from the residents on site. We just saw several of the resident trailer occupants walking their small dogs around the dirt loop of the tent area.We stayed on Sunday and Monday nights, so there was almost no one tent camping there. That was especially nice, given the layout could lend itself to really having little privacy when visiting on a weekend. The owner said they were pretty booked on weekends, especially when events are happening in nearby Cripple Creek and Victor. We would not camp here on a weekend because we like to have privacy and a sense of having our tent set up more in the woods like we were camping alone. The showers were old but kept clean and well-stocked with paper and soap. The water pressure was really good, and there was no shortage of hot water. We could walk easily in a couple of minutes over to the bathrooms, the cold water spigot, and the large hot/cold water sinks for cleaning cookware. That was all very convenient. The owners did a good job of keeping the facilities and grounds clean. Our kids made good use of the playground. The owner we met, Cindy, was very nice, helpful, and informative. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will most likely come back to camp here next time we visit Cripple Creek.

This is a very beautiful location which is why I chose to have my wedding here. The staff made no effort to remove snow or help us have a nice experience. Instead, held way through my wedding the send some drugged out looking guy named Kevin dressed in dirty Camouflage who sat in the middle of our dance area waiting for payment. I asked him to leave as its a private wedding and started yelling at me over payments. He said (fuck your wedding!) and came at me like he was going to hit me, then he left and called the police on us. The police were frustrated as they get many calls from and about these people that run the place. Aside the horrible experience with the staff, and aside the beauty, the place was run down, the place is almost filled permanent residents in old junky trailers and old junky cars everywhere and dogs off leashes. It turned into a bad dream for us at the end of our wedding because they were unorganized and never collected payment. We were more than happy to pay but we were not about to stop our wedding to do so. The next day it took one of my friends 3 hours, two trips and multiple phone calls to get them to accept payment. What a horrible place to vacation.

Totally rustic, totally rad. Lost Burro is WAY off the beaten path, and you need to be "in the know" to even find it. Congratulations, reader. You are now "in the know." It's an independent, family-run site... which means you won't find it on recreation.gov or reserveamerica.com. This is a GOOD thing, because it will likely still have spots available (if, like us, you wait until the Wednesday before Memorial Day Weekend to try to book a campsite somewhere) when you need them. Slackers, rejoice! They have full RV hookups (including a dump station) as well as more secluded tent sites. There's also firewood available as well as a small store for the necessary necessaries (did you forget your s'mores makings? yeah, we did). Leashed pets are welcome, but if you hike off-site you *MIGHT* be able to take them off leash (at your own risk, natch. because, you know, wildlife and nature n'all that). Speaking of off-site hikes, if you head out through the open field area, up the hill past site 68, and out of bounds off the little trail that's there, word on the street is that there's a sweet little waterfall about two miles up the trail. We didn't make it, because it started pouring rain... but apparently it's there. Please let me know if you find it!The campground also has two small, tetanus-shot-worthy playgrounds (it's not fun until somebody pinches a finger or two), a really large open field, a volleyball net, and a small creek running through it. There didn't appear to be any beetle-kill in the area, so many sites are partially-to-almost-totally wooded (less so for the RV sites, more so for the tent-only sites). The owners are also really helpful and nice. One last thing: if you have kids who like to ride scooters or rollerskate around the more-developed campgrounds you see on the State-run websites, they're out of luck here. The grounds are really well maintained, but they ARE dirt. So, scooters and rollerskates are probably not ideal. BMX bikes, however... bring it on!

Have been staying at the Lost Burro for roughly 15 years. Usually for the vets rally but my husband and I occasional stay for our anniversary in one of the cabins. (We actually met at the campground) Its always been well kept, the staff has always been very inviting and friendly. Service was always outstandingNew owners are next to impossible to reach tho. Tried to book a cabin a couple of times and 2 events for this coming summer and have yet to hear back

Positives :This is a beautiful location with a lot of potential . The shower was Hot. There was electricity and Black Water dumping. Negatives: "Billy-Bob" runs the place . He doesn't man the office. We drove there 2X and walked up 2X. There was a padlock on the doorway every time we went up, with No Instructions. The Bathrooms are Not Maintained: No Papertowels or toilet paper, dirty water on floors; and VERY SMELLY. "Billy-Bob" LIED to Me: He Told Me I Could Refill our Water Tank (It was Friday Night at 10pm when I called just before arriving, & and I asked specifically about dumping black water and filling our water tank and electricity ). When I got there no one was there: the place was tight as a drum with the padlock on it. No instructions. And signs about non-potable water -With E. coli and other bacteria in it -all over the place. Next Day: Tried to get him to go down on the price and mentioned that I had asked him specifically about the water, he said "you still owe me 38 bucks .". I now have to go to town and pay $10 to refill my tank because I was afraid of him and paid it. He was starting to get belligerent. The Water is NOT POTABLE: There are signs ALL OVER saying Not Potable Water , so you can't Refill your Water Tanks, unless you want "ECOLI COLIFORM BACTERIA" and Risk of Infections. NON-POTABLEHe Finally got off His Butt and Came down when he Realized we'd dumped our Black Water and Were about to Leave. That's when he walked up and said : "You owe me $38."I Think he is stealing money (or just not reporting it): he didn't open the office and didn't plan on giving me a Receipt until I told him flat-out: "I Need you to open the office up." Then he did Finally. I wasn't sure he was even the Manager or owner, because he looked so Unkept and could have been anybody just taking money; he was not at his post and did not look the part or act polite or professional.AFTER THE SHOWER, my Husband BROKE OUT IN A RASH ALL OVER HIS TORSO. Gotta go to the VA Hospital now.BEWARE

If I could give it less than 1 star I would give it a -3! Very uneasy feeling pulling in, meeting the owner, and the "office" is a run down shack of a trailer with old appliances shoved in it that don't work. There was only enough room to make a path from the front door to the counter. NO CELL SERVICE at all. You had to go up to the office and use their WiFi. We didn't stick around long enough to see if it actually worked. We didn't even stay at all, just got back in our vehicle and left.

My family has been coming to the Lost Burro for 26 out of the last 27 years and this was far ans away the worst camping experience I've had there, or anywhere for that matter. Mary, the former owner was always very accommodating and made us feel welcome. However, there are new owners and they are letting the place get run down. They were rude to us the entire time... including telling us that our fire was too big (we just were getting it going and it was not over 4 feet), almost charging us an extra day when we were not out by 11:00 AM (this was never a problem with Mary, but we were always out by 2:00), and constantly watching every move our entire party made. The majority of the people there are more or less "permanent" residents living in what I would describe as squalor. There are tarps covering the trailers to keep from leaking. One trailer had a piece of plywood for the front door. Many of the trailers had junk laying all over the place. The people living there made us feel like we were the outcasts there and we should not be in their community. Unless ownership changes, we decided as a group (almost 20 of us) will never be back again. It's sad to see a family tradition come to an end.
