Is the Slyman's in Independence really inferior to the original location in Cleveland? It's an age-old question. Many people passionately insist that the Independence location doesn't hold a candle to the OG Slyman's and that you're a fool if you go to it instead of the Cleveland restaurant.Recently, a friend of mine and I got lunch at Slyman's. Since it was a Saturday, we had to go to the Independence restaurant since the OG one is closed on the weekends. When we went, the restaurant was hopping, which is always a promising sign.Of course, both my friend and I ordered corned beef sandwiches. She went with the lite size of the original corned beef sandwich, and I went with a full-size Reuben. I also got a side of the restaurant's house-made potato salad.Though my friend got the "lite" size, her sandwich was still big and contained a very generous amount of corned beef. My sandwich was even taller and fatter. My eyes widened at how much corned beef was between the slices of grilled rye. In addition to a lot of corned beef, my Reuben came with melted Swiss cheese and a good helping of sauerkraut. My sandwich was also served with horseradish and 1000 Island dressing on the side.I had to open my mouth wide to get a bite of my Reuben. Fortunately, the deliciousness of the sandwich proved to be worth the effort. The corned beef was juicy and tender, and the sauerkraut had a great tang. The 1000 Island dressing was full of flavor, and I eagerly slathered the corned beef with the sauce. The potato salad was good, if a tad unremarkable. When the potato salad arrived, I was temporarily confused by the look of it because it looked so much like a scoop of vanilla ice cream to me and I knew I didn't order dessert (and after I finished my sandwich and potato salad, I had zero room for dessert). Upon closer inspection, I saw the little chunks of potatoes. The potato salad was fresh, but I did want it to have a bit more seasoning. So is the Slyman's in Independence indeed inferior to the OG location? It's been a while since I've gotten a sandwich from the OG Slyman's, but I thought my Reuben at the Independence location was pretty dang good. Maybe the corned beef at the OG Slyman's is a little juicier and shaved more thinly, but if you're craving a corned beef sandwich on a Saturday afternoon, I think the ones at the Independence location will satisfy your fix.

so it's been almost 5 years since my last review of Slyman's Tavern and to be honest, it might be 5+ before i bother with it again. stopped in on Sunday and it was dead. after eating, i'm not surprised. i've never been to the deli downtown and maybe the food is of a better quality than here. i just don't get the hoopla over this place. it's fine. nothing more. we went because Danielle saw on their website that they had a build your own hot dog thing and when we got there, that wasn't on the menu anywhere so strike 1. i wasn't going to ask because i can't stand trying to convince someone that their website says one thing and the physical menu makes no mention of it. so i ordered a NEW YORKER (corned beef, pastrami, swiss, grilled bread). it wasn't terrible but it was like a flavor vacuum. i put all the horseradish they gave me on it and couldn't taste it. maybe the horseradish was old. i don't know. Danielle had a turkey Rueben and said the kraut was flavorless as well. we started w/ Reuben Poppers (sauerkraut balls) which had no discernable sauerkraut, were lukewarm and greasy as hell. and shared a plate of fries which were also not hot and seemed to have been just sitting in the kitchen waiting for someone to order them so they could be thrown on a plate. sad. at one time this was a decent place for a sandwich - even if they pulled the best Polish Boy in the area from their menu. now it's just meh.incidentally, while we were perusing the menu we overheard the table next to us tell their server as they were leaving to let the kitchen know her Rueben had no kraut on it to which he replied "i suspected as much when i set it down." so he saw or suspected but didn't ask and said nothing to anyone in back????? some service (strike 2).

This place was mediocre. The service and people were great. The ambience included knats, otherwise it would have been a great sports bar atmosphere. The food: We ordered mushrooms, classic corned beef, fish sandwich, and potatoe pancakes. The corned beef was served cold, then was offered to put it in the microwave. The potatoe pancakes were bland, the most flavor came from the sour cream. On the other hand, the fish sandwich was really good and cooked well. The mushrooms were really good, but was a very small portion. The drinks: I had a peach sangria, which was delicious! This place clearly has a knat problem, which I found to be strange, in the middle of winter. My husband killed two while we were eating. Lo and behold, I go to the ladies room and spotted at least five of them. This was very disheartening. I don't live in the area, however, I definitely would not recommend.

Our waitress was amazing, real perky personality and smiled the whole time. Gave us recommendations as it was our first time and made the kids feel included. However, when I ordered the roast beef I was expecting it to be as good as the reviews stated, I was disappointed with it being dry and flavorless. The wife's tuna melt was above average.

I don't understand the fascination with this place. The food is incredibly overrated. The corn beef sandwiches were humongous but very very dry and the fries were so bad they shouldn't even serve them. However, the inside is very clean and pretty. They have a nice bar, we had a server name Yvonne, who was great, but the food will never bring me back here.

Wow. Good, but overly pricef. 1 sandwich os $20.50. Yes you can make 2 out of it, but who knows how much 1 slice of bread would be. And I am not sure if they charged for splitting. That is a sandwich alone. Grilled cost another $1.50. I got pick up on St. Patrick's day one year, and she told me they are just waiting on the fries. Great I thought, hot fries. Nope, not even warm. We have eaten here a few times, and sometimes it's not very hot. Breakfast buffet was good. But i don't think they have anymore. Good, but not for the prices.

Ok! If you're craving delicious bar-style food, look no further than Slyman's Tavern in Independence. The tavern offers ample seating indoors, including high top tables and multiple TVs to catch all the sports action. We were promptly seated upon arrival, and our waitress quickly took our drink and appetizer orders. The menu boasts a wide variety of options, ranging from burgers and sandwiches to their renowned Corned Beef and Pastrami sandwiches. Opting for the Corned Beef sandwiches, I ordered the whole while my wife and daughter chose the light. Both portions were incredibly generous, making it a meal for one or a hearty snack for the less hungry. Be prepared to take some leftovers home! Our orders arrived promptly, and the service was top-notch. The atmosphere was inviting, making it a great spot for a family outing.

OH 02-2024 Slyman's Tavern in Independence near Cleveland Ohio, Tony and I had dinner. It is located in shopping center near our hotel. We were greeted and seated immediately. The waitress and hostess were both extremely nice. Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. We were escorted into the second room. Tony and I looked over the menu while she took our drink order of Halk cut Iced Tea with Lemon and PBR in a can.We went with the original Slyman's Corned Beef Light (which means baseball Size vrs regular which is softball size) with kraft, grilled onions and toasted bread! Awesome!!!I also ordered for us to share an order of pierogies and potato pancakes...oh everything was delicious and we shared it all!! The horseradish was fresh!Everything was delicious absolutely highly recommend and would eat here again!!! I wish I lived near by to eat here more often!!!The sides of applesauce was just large enough to tease me!!!

We got the New Yorker version of a Reuben sandwich, which is pastrami and corned beef.Over stuffed and delicious as usual The sliced dill pickle spears were nice and fresh and flavorful, and the sauces were all good although I do not think the spicy sauce that comes with the fried pickle appetizer was spicy at all . You taste a lot of smoke flavor and it's very good but "spicy " definitely not. The ranch dressing that comes with the fried mushroom appetizer, complemented it perfectly . It was balanced and not overly herbal. The hot chocolate was good and came in a normal sized coffee cup, not a fishbowl .If you want a glass of water, you need to ask for one.Prices are reasonable for the quality of food you are getting and the pleasant Tavern ambience. There is a happy hour for four of the different appetizers only where they are five dollars apiece and that is worth considering if you'd like to share different things around the table. The restaurant was clean inside and out and so were the bathrooms. They got really busy shortly after the 5 o'clock crowd started coming in, so we were lucky. We got there around 4:30. No complaints in the server was very attentive.Be aware that half of the seating is that tall barstool with the back kind of thing with the taller table. Fortunately, they have some regular tables that we were able to use as Seniors. That's pretty much a necessity. Same if you have a handicap. They had a cute little valentine's decorated Christmas tree.A comfortable place. I do wish the seats were padded, but except for the back of the bench seats you are out of luck there.
