Went to Mely's Kainan late Sunday afternoon and had some delicious Filipino food! We ordered the Mechado and the Bistek. The bistro was flavorful and delicious! Added a little broth to the rice and it as so good! Mechado was a little bland but loved the veggies and beef chunks! The owner even gave us a little bit of sinigang on the house and that was delicious also!

Wonderful food!We literally stumbled into place as our chosen stop a few doors down was closed on Mondays. So we decided to give it a try. Very small place, mostly providing prepared foods to go, but, when I explained we didn't want to eat in the car, he welcomed us to sit at one of his 2 tables! He was also very kind explaining the food and it's flavors and ingredients! So, don't expect a fancy, formal lunch or dinner, BUT you will have fantastic foods with a broad mix of delicious flavors.

Cute little family owned shop. Very small and unassuming. The owners were very kind and told us next time we should call the orders in for faster service. It took a little bit of time only because we didn't order anything until arriving. We ended up ordering pancit and Shanghai lumpia. The lumpia are good. Haven't tried the pancit yet. The food is piping hot. It's more of a to go place rather than a sit down and eat. They have a few tables but nothing really to stay in. I think they have premade to go containers as well. The phone was ringing off the hook when we arrived so you know a place is good when they are busy. Price point isn't bad. I would come back just for some lumpia at this point lol I love lumpia. I wanted to try pork adobo but unfortunately they didn't have any today. So maybe next time. If you like Filipino food, definitely try this mom and pop place.

They have the very best lumpia in Ohio. Bistak is a treat. The pork adobo and menudo are extremely flavored. I'm trying everything on the menu. Haven't had this being in the Philippines. The staff gets your meal fresh and fast. Place reminds of places I visited in the Navy.

The NEW Kainan (formerly Mely's Kainan) has many great new things but a few not so great things that impacted this review. This small sit down restaurant has the ability to be a FIVE STAR sit down to take out restaurant but a few things that happened with my visit that left me with an uneasy feeling. First, I'm gonna start with the good parts of the NEW Kainan. You can now sit down and eat inside OR outside! There are two tables inside and one table outside. Also they now have HaloHalo which was nice eating inside while my mom and I were waiting for our egg rolls. The food was excellent all around and I have only compliments on the food. What I didn't like though was the fact that there were NO LISTED PRICES. When asked about prices, the employee (who seemed to be the ONLY employee there) simply said; "They vary". Okay..... We still wanted to try it though so we bought a few dishes they had that day. Here is our receipt for the visit:Dozen egg rolls $8Dinogoan $18 Large containerHaloHalo $8Sapin sapin $7Pork Adobo $18 Large container We also asked for a side of rice that was $4 for a container of rice. Along with everything there was $5+ in tax then we asked if we would like to leave a tip which we did. He did serve us the Halo Halo at the table inside. What made me personally take a star away was the service we experienced. While we were eating Halo Halo at the table we had asked for fresh egg rolls. We were told it would take a few minutes which was fine because we were able to really enjoy our HaloHalo dessert. We finished our dessert and realized there were no trash cans anywhere visible to dispose of our trash and cup. So, I got up to talk to the employee there and it was difficult to do that because when I went to the register by the kitchen he was chopping ingredients for what I thought was our egg rolls so I sat back down "assuming" he was making the ingredients fresh. After another 15-20 minutes went by and the employee never left the kitchen, never checked on us or said anything about our egg rolls. I got up a second time, went to the register, waited a second there and looked around the corner into the kitchen where the employee was still chopping ingredients. I felt uncomfortable doing this but I felt I had no choice but to physically walk into the kitchen because from the time we started eating the HaloHalo he gave us to that moment I walked into his kitchen was about 30 minutes! I walked into the kitchen very reluctantly and tried to get his attention between chopping and said, "Hello? (Waving my hand) Hi, I was just wondering how much longer on our egg rolls?" He laughed and said, "Oh, they've been done!" while he continued to smile about that fact....I was so upset but kept it inside because not only had our egg rolls been done, they were no longer hot and fresh like we asked for, he put them in a bag next to the rest of our food and NEVER SAID ANYTHING!! WHAT!?!? Are you kidding me?!? What is so funny?!? You made us wait, ignored us like you were doing us a favor when we specifically asked for FRESH egg rolls and didn't even tell us they were done?! At that point my mom and I just picked up our food and left. Don't ignore your customers and make it hard to reach out to you as a customer. You NEVER said anything about our food being done for almost 20 minutes!Overall, this was VERY Pricey for takeout. I would actually go so far as to say this was one of if not the most expensive take out order I've ever had. As good as the food was and for as difficult it is to find Filipino food, sit down or take out, this was beyond what we expected to pay. My mom and I are still not sure if we will come back here though, but we are willing to give this place another try since, as I mentioned above, it is hard to find good Filipino food.

I like this restaurant for many reasons. I love that the owner is in her 80s and does everything herself from scratch. I like the employee who serves the food he has a very calming way about himself. This is not really a dine in restaurant. They have about four seats available in front of the window. They usually have approximately six different fresh choices of the day. I only went twice but they had the same choices both times. If I ate here regularly that could get a little boring. The first time I went the flavors were amazing. I was really taken back. The second time it wasn't quite as good. Maybe I Went on an off day. I think the food is quite authentic. They also usually offer two different types of desserts but you have to buy the entire approximately 6 inch pie dish.

I don't think I'll be rushing back but it was pretty good! So the English is limited here/accents are thick. So stay away if you're annoying about that stuff and go educate yourself you nincompoop. From least to most favorite of what I got... dinuguan, kare kare, lechon kawali. In fact, they make the lechon fresh!! To die for. Things to note:1. No seating. 2. Like seriously, leave. This place is cramped. 3. They accept card now. 4. Ever been anywhere in Asia? It's like that on the inside. Lots of stuff... Not for the germaphobes if you don't like your food sitting out while people walk nearby. 5. There are menus, you just gotta find them. They were on top of the mini fridges when I was there. 6. Rice is extra $$$.UPDATE: I wrote this 10 hours ago. My sister was uuuhhhh. Struggling earlier after our meal. I myself just spent time on the potty. Yikes.

Mely's Kainan is cash only with a single table set up if you choose to dine in. This is mostly a carry out style business. I drove out here from Independence for my lunch today. I wanted to get my usual mainstay of adobo and unfortunately they did not have it. I advise to peruse the online menu and try to order ahead. I went with the special for the day which was the bistec. It was a tender serving of beef and onion served atop a bed of white rice. A few Filipina women came in while I was there and all ordered the same. I also had the shanghai rolls and BBQ pork skewers. Everything was delicious. What really won my heart over was the star of the show; Mely. We had a great conversation about life and our experiences as human beings. She is extremely busy because of the business and often caters to local hospitals. Her birthday is coming up in August and I am definitely stopping up to eat and celebrate. I hope that she does not retire any time soon because I want to eat some more of the wonderful food she cooks. I highly recommend Mely's Kainan for some great Filipino food.
