The food was OK. Don't know if the pepper Scotch Bonnet was used. The oxtail was very tender and the sauce was good. The Ackee and Saltfish was a little mushy some whole pieces a little salty. Still was missing the Scotch Bonnet taste. I would order again and trying other dishes as well.I tried the curry goat yummy still no scotch bonnet

Went to Gar and Mar with my mom who's willing to try more than just American food. So we were a little disappointed when the food wasn't matching the hype we saw. While it was okay none of it tasted that different than any other food from like an American restaurant. Also I got a vegetarian dish and then it came out with meat.I ate a few bites because I'm a vegetarian by choice not for some ethical reason. But I was still confused on how this happened and it was close to closing time so we didn't want to send it back. The Mac and cheese was the biggest let down since it was giving Kraft. And with everything else we could have just made the food at home. The drinks we got however were delicious! 10/10 would recommend getting a drink.

I came in for lunch one day for my first time visit when I was at Baldwin Wallace University. As a big fan of Jamaican food, I had to try the Jerk Chicken. I ordered the large plate with provisions and a pineapple ginger. The chicken was hot off the grill and perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The provisions were a mix of plantains and island root vegetables. All well prepared and delicious. I recommend a touch of the scotch bonnet hot sauce. I will come back for Curry Goat and the jerk pork nana pork ribsHighly recommended

Came here with co-workers to sample this newly converted restaurant and try their Jamaican fare. Layout and set-up looks just like the old Campus Grille, but it's all good!We tried both the fried plantains and the fried okra...plantains were not cooked enough unfortunately leading to a tougher bite and lack of caramelization. Their fried okra came with a spicy remoulade dipping sauce making them a much better choice. Someone at the table also got a bowl of creamy mac-n-cheese, but it was not overly flavorful. The jerk chicken plate was slightly spicy and smokey and came with a side of tasty dirty rice.Overall a good meal experience and would probably give them another go and try a few other dishes.

Only 2 stars because the waitress was too sweet!! Let me tell you I order the Jerk chicken meal it was disgusting af!!! No jerk seasoning but a spicy bbq that was pour zig zag on the chicken onlyThe macaroni and cheese was so dry it tasted like kraft heavy on pepper. The beef patty was so thin undercooked and the curry chicken was worse I drove over a hour for this nonsense!!! I'm soooo upset 45 dollars honestly this terrible meal made me realize I should cook at home!!!! DO NOT GO HERE!!!!

Gar and Mar is one SERIOUSLY good authentic Jamaican restaurant located in the heart of Berea, OH!I visited for the first time yesterday with a BIG group of Cleveland girls, with a reservation made for 30. The owner and her daughter knew we were coming, curious about Jamaican food, so she created a very informative PowerPoint for us. One thing is for sure - the presentation made us want to try everything! We all agreed that if Gar and Mar offered a "sampler" of many of the must-try dishes, that it would be very popular! Since there were so many of us, it took a while for all our orders to be taken and to receive our drinks. I just ordered a Diet Coke but many of those in my group ordered more traditional Jamaican drinks, like Ginger Beer. Then the meals came out soon after our drinks did. I ordered jerk chicken with a side of "provisions," sweet cabbage, and fried plantains for the very reasonable price of around 13 dollars. I like spice so I chose jerk but others around me chose other options like the brown chicken stew, curry chicken, and pork jerk ribs. My meal was absolutely delicious and totally authentic! My favorite part of it was definitely the chicken itself, but after adding a little seasoning, I was also a fan of the Jamaican dumplings (which is part of the "provisions.") I also brought home a slice of black cake to go, which I ate at home. The cake was $5 and was incredibly dense and heavy, not like typical cake at all. It was also soaked in a sweet, red wine and rum. Unfortunately, I ate it before I thought to take a picture of the cake. Gar and Mar also offered other baked goods for sale, some Jamaican and some more American, like banana bread and chocolate chip cookies. Overall, I am a massive fan of this family-run business and plan on returning next time I am in the area. Give it a try!

The food group Gourmet Gastronauts had their first meeting this month where we picked Jamaican to try! There was 9 of us and we loved it! The music was enjoyable and the decorations made us feel like we were in Jamaica! Even the service was amazing. They got all our orders correctly and were accommodating to a large group. Also extremely helpful in explaining all their food. We all agreed we would go back

My husbands co-worker kept chatting up this place- he loved the jerk chicken. So husband suggested we try it for dinner. As we're walking in ( about 6:50) we note the door says they close at 7:30. Hopefully, that's enough time. We walk in and I am immediately surprised at the decorations. It was redone very nicely. Lots of details at the tables, festive décor on the walls, lots of Jamaican flags, and things hanging from the ceiling. That sounds like a lot, but it wasn't. It was very cheerful and welcoming. Clean. Spacious- lots of seating. We weren't sure if we seat ourselves or order at a counter. It kinda looked like there were two counters, so we just loomed until someone told us what to do. Finally a girl said we can sit anywhere. We sat for a few minutes then she came and asked us if we're eating there. Yes, thought we said that, but okay. She then gave us menus. I am not familiar with this cuisine, but there was not much that sounded appealing to me. (That's a personal preference only- there are LOTS of choices on the menu!) I looked up escovitch and this sounded like my jam. I love a vinegary brine. Our server asked if we minded if they put our food in To Go containers, because they were closing soon and didn't want to do the dishes. It was a little off-putting, but I truly didn't care about the container. When she brought our meals, she asked if we wanted a bag. Clearly trying to get us out of there ASAP.My shrimp escovitch was overall disappointing. The medium meal was $16 and only had 6 small shrimp. The shrimp were cooked well- I thought at the end of the day they might be rubbery or dry. They were perfect. The vegetables that were marinated in the escovitch were so good. I loved the zingy flavor. The rice was a little dry and too spicy for me- but it had good flavor. The cabbage was tasty, too. The other vegetables were just a frozen mix tossed in with the cabbage. My husband really liked his jerk chicken. Excellent flavor and spice. Large was a good portion, but a little pricey.Overall, I will not return because the service was poor. I did not like feeling rushed (we were out before they even closed) and my meal was puny.

Excellent food and service in this vibrantly-colored restaurant with music I at just the right volume for an enjoyable background. It seemed hard to be disappointed after getting a whiff off the grill by the master himself upon walking into the restaurant.A bit disappointed they were out of fried chicken but our party of three ordered the curry chicken meal, the jerk chicken ribs meal, and the jerk chicken meal. Each meal was cooked to perfection with meat falling off the bones, rice that was just the right texture, and delicately cooked plantains and cabbage. We'd definitely go back.
