I wanted to support a local family business that made candy from scratch. I called Martinsville Candy Kitchen from Charlotte, NC wanting to order something from my home State of Indiana. I had seen on their FB page that they were making green striped clovers for St. Patrick's Day and they looked adorable ! I messaged them on FB asking if they ship, and they do. I ordered 2 sassafras flavored shamrock ($4.50 ea.), 4 pistachio white chocolate cookies ($2 ea.), 6 milk chocolate caramels, 1 milk chocolate mud ball ($5), 1/2 lb. white chocolate raspberry jellies ($8), 1/2 lb. sugared orange jellies ($8). Each item had been packed lovingly and well with bubble wrap and topped with curled green, light green and white gift ribbon. It was like opening a present (for myself and husband). I absolutely love the white chocolate raspberry jellies. I'm definitely ordering a larger amount of those next time. The milk chocolate caramels were very, very good. The pistachio cookie was a cute idea to have available for St. Patrick's Day with it's slightly green color and clover candy sprinkles on top. These particular sprinkles were quite hard though, so be careful with your teeth ! The mud ball is like a huge candy bar. I sliced it into pieces. Mine had pecans, caramel, and nougat. The orange sugar jellies were very soft and delicious. The girl that coordinated my order said her parents owned the store. She was very pleasant and proud of her family business. She patiently helped me decide what to order. They have so many more candies than what is listed on their FB menu. It would be helpful if they listed everything they make (and then put a note that availability varies) to make it easy for people to order that do not visit the store. The gal I ordered with warned me that the shamrocks may not make it without breaking during shipment. Happy to report they arrived perfect ! I'll probably be placing an order for Easter. Looking forward to see what goodies they come up with !

Come for the candy and stay for the ambience! This little gem has been around for many, many moons. My 92 year old father-in-law used to come here as a youngster. The candy is incredible and they have hand dipped ice cream (Blue Bell) too. They really shine at Christmas when they make hundreds of homemade candy canes that are unmatched by any big store chain. But they're also great year round and have lots of delicious chocolatey goodies!

Fun little road trip from Indy. If candy canes are what you are wanting be sure to call ahead and see if they have candy canes in stock before you make the drive, especially in December. The candy canes are definitely worth it for the drive! Also, they show how to make the candy canes 3-4 times a day on the weekend and sometimes during the week. Be sure to arrive 10-15 minutes early to get a spot near the window to see the process and hear the history from the owner. Ice cream and shakes are hand dipped with Blue Bell ice cream and they had about 20 flavors.

This is a really fun and unique, historic shop in downtown Martinsville. I visited the candy shop for the first time to get some Valentine's goodies for my kids. I knew they were famous for their candy canes and found out that they make candy canes all year, in many different flavors. I picked up a few strawberry and cherry candy cane hearts for Valentine's Day. And some chocolate-covered Twinkies ($1.75) and peanut butter/chocolate-covered pretzel sticks (2 for $1.50). The prices were pretty good. The gourmet chocolates in the cases were each priced differently and by the pound.I was hoping to find more Valentine's candy on display but they didn't have a ton. They had some things available but not as much as I had hoped to find, but I'm glad to have gotten the famous candy canes! Those are what people go to Martinsville Candy Kitchen for. They also have an ice cream and soda fountain counter but I didn't see anyone working behind or ordering from it when I was there. You can watch them making candies in the back as well. It's an old candy shop (over 100 years), so it's a bit like stepping back in time.

I should have focused on taking photos of a business like I usually do, but I ended up indulging myself and bought a ton of their candy. As I browsed the "jewelry cases" of candy and I just couldn't resist. The trays of chocolate candy seemed to go on forever.I bought quarter pounds and half pounds of some of my favorites: chocolate covered caramels, peanut butter cups, plus rock candy on a stick, and lemon drops, to name a few. I tried one chocolate covered almond and bought a whole pound. They did end up being my favorite overall even after getting home and trying everything. They have a sugar free variety of both dark chocolate cherry cordials and milk chocolate cherry cordials. I don't think I've ever seen this before so I got both. The kids like dark chocolate so maybe I can get more of the milk chocolates. They also have a little cafe seating area in the back where you can enjoy your "soda fountain" treats. In talking with the cashier, I learned this business is over 100 years old. They must be doing something right, but regardless I'm coming back for those huge chocolate covered almonds. That is an item very hard to find and theirs were especially good.

Really enjoyed our visit to this store and it was the highlight surprise find of our day trip to Martinsville. We had seen a news segment over the holidays about a place in Indiana that was still making homemade Candy Canes by hand that sold out every holiday. We walked in and recognized the big picture window kitchen working station that was on the news where the homemade Candy Canes and chocolates are made. We were delighted to see that the incredible homemade canes were in stock and very reasonably priced. The family owned store has been there for 103 years and we enjoyed meeting the owner who kinda looked like Ole Saint Nick himself.

How can you not like this place? It's nostalgic. Has a great hometown, local feel and very friendly workers. My cousin is a local and took a few of us here to have some ice cream. I had Oreo on a cone and it was great. My cousins chose the Peach and they love it so much! We spoke to the owner about the famous candy canes and he answered lots of questions for us. On the way out we purchased some candy, including some delicious and cute gummy bears. This place is just adorable and I look forward to going for the holidays!

Whether you like chocolates, hard candies, or even ice cream, there is a nice shop to pick your favorites right across from the courthouse. I didn't go during the Christmas rush or when they do demonstrations of making candy, but there were some ladies working behind a glass wall in the back making something that looked tasty! The long narrow building has a bank of candy counters on each side with a spot to get ice cream (and maybe a sandwich) on the right side. All the candy is under glass, so you just point out what you want to the staff (by the piece or by the pound, whatever you like and can afford!)The candy isn't cheap, but that's okay. A lot of it is made in house, though I would guess some of the candies are produced elsewhere. When you aren't mass producing, the prices seem to be a bit higher. But the money is going to support a local business and I think they did me a favor so that I didn't go crazy and gain ten pounds by over buying! ha! I enjoyed all the pieces I tried.Review #2124
