Maria Mitrione's Italian Market & Catering

It's a tiny Italian store with hot food to order, canned and packed specialty foods, an amazing variety of classic sodas, rotating selection of fresh refrigerated items (today there were slices of tiramisu, little antipasto plates, and salads}. And an assortment of pipe tobacco plus a mini humidor for the cigar aficionado in your life!If no one's minding the store, check with the barmaid at Boswell's right across the aisle, or she may just hustle over to help you. (You'll have to come here to understand the set up between the two businesses.)The shop is an extremely downsized version of what it once was, so don't get overexcited by those 2012 reviews. I'm sorry I missed out on the original but this is still a must-stop while you're in Richmond, or just take the ride if you're looking for some genuine Italian peeled tomatoes, Pesto, olive oil or risotto mix. It's a third-generation family owned business- need I say more?Buon' appetito!

Everything an Italian could ask for, tucked away in Richmond, IN. Who knew?It's a joy to walk in, see all of the goods, and (the most important) smell all of the smells.Fresh food. Amazing packaged goods. Refrigerated items. Catering. On, and on, and on.Check it out. It's worth your while.

How have I never been here until today? I just returned from lunch here, and this place is really stinkin cool. You can build your own sandwiches out of yummy italian meats & cheeses, and it even comes with a cup of olives on the side. I should have ordered a half sandwich because I couldn't finish the whole. They have loads of other menu options as well, and they even serve ice cream.Then I peek over my shoulder and see a cooler full of brightly colored soda bottles. Now, I'm sort of a soda junkie and have a pretty large collection of funky soda bottles at home so this immediately caught my eye. Loads of fun flavors to try here. I'm now sipping on a Mount Fuji Apple Fizzy Lizzy as I write this review.There's also lots of fun candies & trinkets to take a look at here as well. This is an awesome establishment that I plan on returning to regularly.

I am embarassed to say I have lived here for a year and a half and never stepped foot in this place until now. Shouldn't have waited so long! Maria Mitrione's is truly awesome for so many reasons. Not only do they make fresh, savory, delicious grilled sandwiches, they are also attached to one of the coolest specialty markets I have ever seen!Their items range from wines, ciders, olive oils, dried goods, popcorns, bulk candy, old time candies, cookies, breads, it goes on and on! There are also some unique kitchen items, gifts, toys as well as tools and hardware, it is so cool!Stopped in for lunch and ordered the Rella-Bella sandwich which was fresh mozarella and fresh portabellas on very genererously sized bread, you have the option of half size as well. It comes with bagged chips and choice of either pickles or olives. Next time I may buy one of their numerous interesting snack foods that are scattered about the store and have that with my sandwich! There is also a salad bar, either all you can eat, or one time pass through as well as a daily hot-meal special. The deli case was also full of some items ready to eat such as a very tantalizing lasagna pie. Highly highly recommended!

Garlic stuffed olives, wine, a nut case (literally, a case displaying nuts) and the hardware store interior (high ceilings, wood floors and beams) are just a few of the reasons I love the Italian market located in Richmond's historic depot district. It had been a few years since my last visit, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that during that time they had somehow pulled off morphing this business into both a hardware store and Italian Mercado rolled into one. Cheek pinchingly cute factors:-old fashioned bar with swiveling stools-long glass case boasting everything from baklava and Irish cheese to caprese salad and Italian sausage. -olive bar-floors that creek like they have a century-old story to shareMoment when I took my hands off the cheeks:-deli food items were a bit on the greasy side: particularly the white bean and 5 grain salads-expected a broader cheese selection - I would try pushing the envelope a bit more (but who knows, maybe there isn't enough of a demand in Richmond for fetas, brie and gruyere?)

I only see one reason to go there and that is to buy Cento canned products. It's a brand I know as far back as when I lived in Philadelphia and I trust what they put into the cans.There aren't many individual places to go in Richmond. Since downtown Main Street died in the 1970s, there haven't been many. Since the explosion in 1968, the meat market is gone, the Bartel Hoosier Store is gone, Vigrans is gone and Veach's is only a toy store now. The promenade has come and gone.Maria Mitrione's market is a good look back to those sorts of places. However, I think people from out of town will like it better than people who live here. I had to push my mum to go there and when we did, it was problematic. At first, it was small and crowded. Now, that it's opened up with Richmond Hardware, it's not cozy. It's a tough situation to win.I've had the pizza and I would never have it again. I don't like Boar's Head (like going to Zales for diamonds) meats or cheeses so I wouldn't be buying a sandwich. My uncle complained that the last time he was there from Dayton, he got stale coffee. I'm not sure how that works since I had to grind beans the last time I bought coffee there, but people in Richmond aren't likely to buy there so it might go stale.Considering that the depot area is no longer crime-infested as it used to be, I think that people will enjoy the store, especially if they're taking a walk from the good food at Little Sheba's and enjoying all the stores along the way.

My daughter introduced me to this great Italian deli and market in Old Richmond a couple of years ago, and I always make a stop there whenever visiting her at school. Maria Mitrone's is an old-fashioned market, just like we have in the Italian section of San Francisco called "North Beach." Maria's has every Italian and gourmet staple you could imagine, including Italian meats & cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, beer and wine, imported pasta and olive oils, a great selection of cigars, and a lots and lots of other items. They have a great deli where you can order sandwiches and pizzas to order, along with a great buffet/salad bar. A pre-ordered box lunch, complete with sandwich, two sides, dessert and drink is only $7.00. Wow! It would cost double that in the Bay Area. Oh, and don't forget the cannolis and Italian cream cake at Maria's. Yum!

Today at LunchNormally at the beginning of the week I get a listing of lunches from Maria Mitrione's Italian Market and usually they post the soups, the hot entrees, the sides, their salad bar, etc. There are choices in the cold case for pastries and such as well as cold salads. It's a place that you can go in and out fairly quickly. I was tired of eating the same thing every Monday, when I rush to the Vietnamese restaurant closed on Sunday, so I happened in the neighborhood, and why not let's stop for lunch at Maria Mitrione's. Today's special consisted of spaghetti and chicken parmigiana with garlic toast. I forget how much exactly it was, really not more than $6. There was also fettuccine Al Fredo and other things, I take it must be Italian day on Mondays. I succumbed at the first suggestion, make matters easy. I got a glop of sgetti topped with a mound of chicken parmigiana encrusted with melted now congealed cheese on top, accompanied by cold garlic toast, the garlic powder lightly covering the margarine. This is one of those dishes that Gordon Ramsey would feature on Kitchen Nightmares, as it was cold, tasteless, without texture, and congealed on a plate. No effort had been spared in making it unique nor tasty. At one o clock no one had chosen it, therefore there was plenty of it left. The key lime cheese cake torte/tarte for dessert was pale, neutral tasting, and covered in old whipped cream. The water over ice was fresh and clean and refreshing. Overall a NASTY LUNCH with a NASTY taste.

This is great place to go if you need a break from the overall weird vibe Richmond has. Super cute and old fashioned, and they have a lot of the fancy groceries you can't get anywhere else in Richmond. I've yet to get anything but ice cream there, but I would like to in the future. They also have a really wonderful selection of rolling tobaccos.

If you need authentic Italian ingredients this is the only place to go in Richmond.
