What a gem of a restaurant in Newport!We were the first couple of a group of six. It didn't look promising when we walked in, but this restaurant is much bigger on the inside than expected. We walked all the way to the back and there were a couple big tables for groups. Perfect!Unlike what I'd consider a 'typical' Mexican restaurant, the menu was not massive. They offer a large variety of different Mexican dishes, but it's only two pages long!I ordered the Flag Burrito and thought I was finished. He asked what kind of meat I wanted; it was time to consult the menu again. The options for meat (or veg) were massive, which means you can customize most any item on the menu. Perfect!Everyone enjoyed their meals, but I can only speak to my Flag Burrito made with chicken. It was fantastic! I don't know why, but I was surprised the chicken was shredded. But the beauty of it was that everything inside the burrito, which was indeed massive, was mixed in such a way that the flavors all mixed together perfectly. Yes, I realize I'm over using the word 'perfect'. As I write I realize I have no complaints whatsoever and I've increased my rating from 4 stars to 5. They are well deserved.Our waiter was helpful, but busy. That said, he checked on us often enough for several folks to order seconds on their drinks. I have pictures, but I'm going to do what I really don't like about pictures posted on yelp. I have pictures of meals and I don't now what they are. My apologies.Anyway, if you are in the area... and even if you're not, if you are a fan of Mexican cuisine, definitely stop in. You won't be disappointed.

This vibrant Mexican restaurant is serving up solid classic dishes. The portions are huge and the price is reasonable. The flavors from the fajita and the flag burrito were solid, but not mind blowing. The proportions of ingredients in the burrito could have been better as it was way too rice heavy and lacking on the beans. The chip and queso dip quality was great however. You cannot go wrong here.

We love this place. It's local and it tastes good. Love the quesadilla it's so big and tons of flavor. The salsa options pack a lot of heat which I also love. Chips are good and fresh. Never leave here hungry or disappointed

We've been coming here for 20 years. First read about it in Cincinnati Magazine when we lived in CT. Now that we live in Cincinnati we make the trip from Loveland, OH, to this restaurant in Newport, KY, several times a year.When I was young I was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio,TX, and also at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. We ate at many Mexican restaurants, both in Mexico and the USA. The food at La Mexicana is about as authentic as it gets!

Delicious and authentic Mexican! The staff was very kind and willing to be patient. All food was correct and served quickly. Had the Gordita and believe me it's nothing like the ones I've had at Taco Bell. Perfect place to grab lunch and it's very spacious. Can't wait to go back and try a margarita.
