I've lived in Independence for years and driven past Ed-Mar Dairy countless times on my way to Walton and always thought, "I need to stop there someday." It always seemed, though, that I drove past when the dairy was closed. It has limited hours (open Saturdays 11-1), but I finally made a point of visiting this weekend. I'm so glad I did. The working farm has a small public room where you can taste a variety of the dairy's raw milk cheeses and local honey. Every cheese I sampled was delicious and I took several home with me. The real fun began, though, when we asked if we could see any baby cows. The woman working in the shop took us out back where we got to meet the calves. Over the course of the next half hour, she gave us a short tour and explained the whole fascinating process of this working farm. Let me just tease you by saying that it involves cow fitbits and a laser-guided milking robot. Go for the local cheese, stay for the cows.

Picked up some cheese at Ed-Mar Dairy for a party I was having and it was a crowd favorite! Some of those who preferred a hotter bite loved the Pepper Jack and Smoked Pepper Jack but everyone agreed the Banklick Cream was divine in the sausage quiche! If you like a smoky flavor I'd also recommend their super soft Smoked Gouda and the Kentucky Queso can't be beat when its melted for dipping chips into all evening. All of Ed-Mar Dairy's artisanal cheeses are full-flavored with a great creamy texture; its a blessing to have a farm business like this so close to home in Walton, Kentucky!

There were several good selections. You'll definitely find something you want to take home with you while at the same time supporting a local business. Nice people, good cheese. You can't go wrong.

I was in charge of planning a bachelorette party for a cow-loving bride and I knew going to a dairy farm had to be part of our day. Ed-Mar Dairy was extremely easy to work with and flexible on our tour time and group size. The tour of the farm was amazing! Everyone had such a great time meeting the cows, feeding the calves and learning about the farm. We also loved the cheese tasting and the hayride. Many thanks to Ed for the fantastic tour and spending quality time with our group! I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful dairy farm with your family and friends!
