Josh W. "I'm honestly surprised I've never tried this place before. It's a true Cincinnati staple, and you know that if a place has Jeff Ruby's name on it, it's gonna be epic. This place has been named "best splurge" in Cincinnati by Citybeat numerous times and for good reason. If you want incredible steaks, this place is a top pick.My boss invited my lady and I out to dinner here. The building to this place was built in 1901 as a police patrol house and is listed as a historic building. The inside still has that classic historic feel all around. It's definitely not a huge building but does have lots of seating. The bar upstairs is really cool and almost has a speakeasy feel to it but without the password to get in. Of course their menu is mainly about big steaks but there are other options as well. Their wine menu is HUGE and loaded with great choices in all price ranges. They also have a menu with beer, spirits, and specialty cocktails. Our server, Howie, was absolutely awesome. He took the time to explain all of the menu and made great recommendations. Here's everything my lady and I enjoyed:Wine:-La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva 2017 tempranillo (Bottle)Appetizer:-West coast Oysters Dinner: -Barrel Cut Filet Mignon with a side of garlic mashed potatoes & Freddie Salad-Herb Crusted Filet with a side of garlic mashed potatoes & Freddie SaladEverything from start to finish was incredible. The oysters were super fresh, the steaks were cooked to perfection, and the wine we picked paired amazingly well with it all. We couldn't even finish it all so we had some to take home. And though we didn't think we had room for any dessert, Howie highly recommended we try their peppermint ice cream, so we decided to have a couple scoops, and it was excellent. The peppermint wasn't overpowering at all. In fact I'd say it was just right and a great finish to an amazing meal.I'd definitely come here again for a splurge dinner. I might opt to sit in the bar area next timr if there's a table available. No wonder this place is such a Cincinnati staple and has been around for so long."

I love the antique feel of the property and its historical flair. We were greeted by several staff members while at our table. Our server, a Michael Douglas look alike was helpful and engaging. Our food was delicious overall. The bread was just okay, but I don't like rye. We chose a meatball appetizer that was pared with grits. It was flavorful. We chose a delmonico steak entree and a Duhon pork chop. Our sides were garlic mash and mac and cheese. Our food portions were substantial and we were able to finish our food for lunch the next day. Cookie and cream ice cream was a tasty treat to finish the night."

Decor- upscale and tasteful- check; Service -impeccable - attentive but not bothersome- check; Food - OMG!!! - checkMy husband and I thoroughly enjoyed a special meal last evening. I had the 12-oz ribeye with caramelized Brussels sprouts. Before I get to those, let me mention the circle of rolls that came with a tallow butter candle burning in the center. That butter (and the herbs below it) seeped into those rolls and that literally became a party in my mouth. On the the steak. The steak was melt-in-your mouth tender and cooked to perfection. The caramelized Brussels sprouts were by far the best I have had in Louisville . They were loaded with maple bacon chips, candied pecans and a delicious balsamic dressing. I can't say enough about this dining experience. We will certainly be back. The establishment is located off Westport Rd on Herr Lane and there is plenty of dedicated parking."

They were fall-off-the-bone tender, juicy, great flavor, and just the right amount of BBQ sauce. Our server gave us damp towels for our fingers, but we were able to get every morsel of meat off the bones with only a fork and knife. I think they were perhaps the best ribs I have ever had anywhere - and that includes that famous inn in downtown Montgomery. The service was great as well - attentive without being intrusive."

My plate was cleaned.I had the 12oz strip which was cooked perfectly, coworker had the filet and crab cake, which he said were very good. Then choice two sides, it's just too much! I cant recall what I had besides the baked tater, but I focused on the meat! Did I mention the steak was magnificent?Desert was a toss up between the cheesecake and brûlée. The waitress said the brûlée was made daily in house, so that was it. Second best I have ever had, besides the now closed Chez Paul in Chicago.Overall: If I could eat here weekly, I would! The good: service is on point. Friendly servers, host, and staff. Manager/supervisor came by to ask how we were doing. I appreciate that touch. The appetizers (especially Blue Dog bread!) were delicious and well done. The bad: the entrees are not that good. This last time we went and got the Caribbean chicken - my wife said it was the most disappointing meal she'd had all month (it was a short month :)). Jon O. "This place is absolutely outstanding. First the motif is horse racing which totally fits in Lexington. It's just a classic old school steakhouse in many ways. The food is absolutely scrumptious. The crab cakes were some of the best I have ever had. Mostly crab and not filler. I also had the Bourbon Fillet for my main course. I am not usually a fillet fan but this came with shrimp and grits as well. Just an amazing piece of meet and the shrimp and grits were the bomb. Amazing. Service was pretty good but could have been better. Our meal was delayed somewhat and we had to ask the waitress about it. In a place this expensive where you pay $80 or more for a steak, you shouldn't have to ask. They should come to you. Still service was better than most places so it isn't affecting my stars. Finally - the Old Fashioned they serve is ridiculously sweet. They told me it was sweet. It was so sweet and strong I couldn't drink it. The server took it back and brought me a Manhattan instead which was much better. But this is a matter of taste. Just letting readers know in case they are interested."

I asked on Facebook where I should take Lauren to celebrate her kicking butt in everything and @jamesmkarlson recommended @butcherandbarrel. So we booked a reservation and OMG. They made it such a special experience for Lauren. Jennifer (adore her) started out seating us with a note congratulating her, a little bracelet, and non alcoholic champagne she was ecstatic. Like, come on, how freaking adorable is that! Now the food....we went HAM. *Tuna tartare with fried avocado, hearts of Palms, jalapeño crema, and rice crisps. Lauren ate it all! I had one bite. *truffled deviled eggs. Lauren doesn't even like deviled eggs. These were for me. She said it was one of her favorite things. *Lobster bruschetta. Rich, buttery, and fresh. My favorite appetizer. Then the main drop. Australian A5 Wagyu cooked to mother freaking perfection. I died. Then they surprised us with a dessert trio. * hazelnut fig jam crème brûlée. Crème brûlée is our favorite dessert of all time and this was one of the best ones. I asked him if he got the recipe from Jimmy Gibson before he passed away because it tasted just like Jimmy Gs. And if you're in Cincy, you know what I'm talking about.* tiramisu. We were stuck, but we somehow managed to get this down also. Toffee and chocolate mousse and everything you want it to be.* Cream puff with a lemon sauce and berries. It was the perfect ending to such a phenomenal meal. It was light, but it was good and thank God we walked a mile and a half to from the red stadium because we were beyond full. I recommend! The food was outstanding. I love little tapas plates for the price and selection. I've never really had much Argentinian food, but this was next level. I can't wait to go back."

The staff is always super friendly and accommodating, I've never had to wait long on getting an amazing and affordable meal, and I never have regrets coming here. I typically order the small steak and usually end up taking half home. Key tip, ask for the steak au jus sauce to go if you plan to reheat later. Put the steak and au jus in a pan on your stove top on low heat to warm up, and it's like having it at the restaurant all over! I recommend the ribber fries which are like lighter fluffier Saratoga chips. I ask for mine crispier though. Also, the beer battered onion rings are on point! Top it all off with a local beer brewed literally next door, and you're set! Enjoy one of the best restaurants Portsmouth has to offer folks, you will not regret it!"

I had the peach sangria to drink and it was light and refreshing--perfect for a summer evening. We split the calamari for an appetizer and it was good--not huge portions but the peanut sauce was a tasty change from the typical marinara sauce that you get at most places. I had the Caribbean chicken salad as my entree and it was okay. It wasn't served with very much dressing but I was able to get more from our server. I found this gem researching restaurants in Dayton. This one hits the mark. So my evening began on a Tuesday evening. It was raining outside and I called in for a late dinner reservation at 8:15 pm. I walked in to the dimly lit restaurant and was given a choice to sit on the dining room side or the bar side. Both were setup very nicely and I chose a comfortable booth on the bar side. It was just me so it was nice to observe. The bar is well stocked. I decided to go the wine route this evening. I started with a nice Moscato. Stacy took care of me and after delivering my Moscato went into the specials. They had a seasonal bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes, pesto, and balsamic. That was good for starters. I also went with the ribeye special which was seared and presented rare (as it should be) with mixed veggies and mashed potatoes and a shiitake mushroom glaze. I paired the Malbecwith my ribeye. That was excellent. Everything was flavorful and cooked to perfection. All of the dish presentations were great! I finished with a carrot cake which is made in house. Almost all of their desserts are made in house. Of course, I paired my dessert with a cup of coffee. This is not an inexpensive outing, but the experience is worth the price. It was great service, great food, and a relaxing evening even with the rain outsideand a calm ambiance to inside. Stacy did great with service. Add this one to your list if you are in Dayton. I recently attended last week for a retirement party with 11 people. It was on point; drinks were full, and food was fast and great. Looking over my shoulder, at 5:30 on a Wednesday, there were 20 people waiting for a table. Glad we had our reservations -- highly recommend or be ready to sit for up to an hour. On to the food. Caroline Steak is a staple for dinner for me. Tangled O'Rings and garlic butter atop a beautiful Angus beef sirloin. You can't beat it with the fresh green beans and a potato choice. Are you a burger connoisseur? Try the Caroline or Russ Burgers. For $1 more the Russ is hard to beat. And when you order your burger medium, no one panics, because the kitchen staff knows how to not kill meat. I find other places are timid to do anything less than medium well, perhaps because their beef is lower quality. Appetizers? Southwestern Eggrolls are fantastic. Also, crabcakes- shareable and I'm talking real true crabcakes like you would get in New England, not filler garbage. These are true to their name 100%! You'll soon be ordering a second order. I honestly can't figure out why it isn't more busy - except see my comments about the dire need of a refresh.Pros:Service is on-point.Menu items for the meat lovers or pescetarian. Vegetarians - I'm sorry, I didn't pay close attention this time - forgive me - I had lamb on the brain.Price is appropriate for serving and quality. It is a nice local option to the corporation options in the region.Cons:Honestly, Carvers, you are long overdue for a refresh. It is probably a good thing the dining area is dim / dark so you can gloss over the wear and tear. I'll detail more below if you're interested.Do not order a burger in the bar and expect it to come anything but well. Now for more of the details.1. Check the hours. They're local and they don't necessarily keep the later hours that you might find at a larger-owned establishment.2. If you like Lamb. Get the chops! They are perfect every time. I can't speak highly enough about them.3. Steak - they do it right. I don't need all the accoutrement if a steak is good - and friends, it is good here. However, if the fancy swag is your jam they've got plenty of that too.3. Hello French Onion Soup! Do yourself a favor and order it; trust me on this one. The surprise are the fried onions on top. While I didn't need it, they were a fancy addition that I enjoyed after the main attraction. I'd say this French Onion Soup may be my new favorite to Old Bag of Nails (Yes, I like their French Onion soup the best...until now!). 4. If you save room for dessert, they have some nice options - I have enjoyed cheesecake.5. The wine list is varied with some very fancy selections and some reasonably priced too.6. Black napkins. Thank you. Need I say more? The Refresh: Carvers, you're old and it is showing babe; you need a makeover, or a facelift. The carpet is well-worn and is due for a replacement. The booths fabric choices are from the 90s and the art on the walls is there to match. The tables have been well-cared for, but could use a sanding and a new coat of varnish. You've had some ceiling water damage and I'm noticing - keep the lights low. The bar has room for a stage but could overall be arranged in a more cozy aesthetic. Carvers I'm fallin' for you and I'd like you to be around for a while. I think a well-deserved upgrade might be the think that keeps you hanging around for the next 10 or so years!Friends, if you're trying to decide between this and the guy across the street, give Carvers a try.
