Food is always delicious. It is my go-to place for food when I cannot make up my mind on that large Mass Ave street. My go-to item is their Birria Tacos. Wow, delicious!Service - Very sweet and helpful people.Ambiance - Nice place to sit in, though it can be busy in the middle of the week, with people going in and out. It's more of a take-out spot.

The masses had shared mixed opinions on Chilacates before my visit: one friend said the venue offers "The Worst Food in Central Square" while another insisted that Chilacates serves the best Mexican food in any Cambridge. Who knew a mere restaurant could be so polarizing!I knew. And so I was obliged to try it. The verdict is simple: Chilacates is perfectly fine. Nothing exceptional, but also not actively bad. I had admittedly expected more, but didn't leave feeling disappointed.I had the opportunity to try a tongue burrito. It is good to see a venue that sells tongue in this day and age. The volume of tongue in the burrito was, admittedly, underwhelming. The filling was disproportionately rice and black beans. This made it quite bland. The burrito was fine, but certainly not exceptional. I also sampled a morsel of a so-called taco salad. The mix of iceberg lettuce, unseasoned black beans, and chopped tomato was reminiscent of what you might find in your local elementary school cafeteria. No wonder the employee taking the order asked six times if we wanted to "add" anything to the standard taco salad. The bar for Mexican food in New England is rock bottom. Unfortunately, Chilacates does not exceed expectations. As far as Central Square goes, there are not too many other options for Mexican food. I'm not sure I would recommend going out of your way to eat at Chilacates, but it can be a convenient option at a reasonable price if you find yourself lusting for such cuisine.

Underwhelming experience all around. The ambiance is not really for sitting down, you should really think of it as a takeout place. The orders didn't come out quite right. The food itself had a low average. The birria quesadilla was pretty good, but the chicken burrito was disappointing and the veggie burrito was just bad. Would recommend looking elsewhere for Mexican food unfortunately.

Decent $13 carnitas burrito. I'm happy with the size of the portion which was easily enough for two meals. I thought the rice : bean ratio was good, I love the beans. The hot sauce was hot! I liked itThe location I went to was the new one in East Cambridge. They make the food in the back, not in the front assembly line. Feels like a take out spot but there's some seating.

My coworkers come here multiple times a week, so I tried it with a friend on a Monday evening. The restaurant is small and not crowded. There was plenty of seating and the tables are big so all the food fit comfortably. You order at the counter and the food comes out in a few short minutes. I got the al pastor plate and it was really good. It came with 3 corn tortillas, pineapple salsa, onions, beans, rice, cilantro, and a whole lot of meat. The al pastor itself was very juicy and flavorful- not tough at all and grilled nicely. However, this place was pretty expensive. Tacos go around $4.99 each and burritos for ~$12. And for my plate, even though it had a generous amount of food, $14.95 was pretty pricey compared to other Mexican food in the Cambridge/Somerville area. But even so, I'd still down to come back and give it another try!

I stopped in for late evening takeout at the Chilacates Central Square location, which just opened recently. They have several other locations in the Boston area including in JP, Southie, South End, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Brighton, Brookline, and Newton. This is a fast casual Mexican eatery serving up made to order tacos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tortas, tostadas, taco salads, bowls, tamales, with choices of fillings, veggies, and meats. The cozy space has a cool vibe with limited seating inside. You can order online for takeout or delivery or in person. For takeout, I ordered the Carnitas Taco Plate ($14.95 plus tax) which comes with Mexican rice and black beans. My order was all set in about 11 minutes after ordering and I enjoyed my food back at the house. The 3 soft corn tortillas were wrapped in foil to stay warm and the decent amount of food was packed well in a foil container including the firm black beans, soft rice and plenty of tender carnitas, radish, cilantro, onions, lime, and sauces on the side. I made my own carnitas tacos which were filled up pretty good, as I enjoyed my late dinner watching TV. I would recommend this place for fresh Mexican takeout.

No pics bc it looked so good from the jump I just ate. Neeeded a quick pick me up bite before dinner in a bit and they delivered. I'd have to look deeper but I'm fairly certain they have another location in revere (PLEASE DONT AUOTE ME) that I love and adore. But it's fast, beyond delicious, good portions, reasonably priced. I'll be back many many (many many many) more times

Excellent Mexican food. Super fresh . Fast service but quality made to order dishes. Absolutely loved it!! We got the Biria tacos to share. They were so perfect!! The braised beef was the best I've had. My husband got a chicken burrito and a horchata. He loved them both. I got the Al pastor burrito bowl , which was actually a plate. It was huge! The Al pastor pork was so so fresh and flavorful. Ten out of ten!!! Also the salsa verde and hot salsa were yummy!! The sweet girl working the register is amazing!

Great new addition to Central Square. I'd never visited this local chain until they expanded to Cambridge. The quesadilla selection is great and the plantains are always warm and sweet. Can't wait to try more things now that they are in the area.
