What is this place? I've never had a more inhospitable reception than when I knocked on the front door of The Cobber. It was 10pm on a Saturday and the front door had been locked. Desperately seeking authentic dive bars I brazenly knocked.A scruffy, overworked looking gentleman opened the door and I got a peek in. It looked like a typical bar only it was completely empty. Assuming they were in need of patrons to order drinks I asked if I could come inside. He said "members only". To which I replied, "can I apply for a membership?" which is typical for North Carolina nightclubs with a three day membership rule. He responded again "members only, you have to know someone". Determined to find out once and for all what their deal was, I asked if it was a bar. Already looking annoyed he stammered "yes, it's a bar" and offered no further information. I became confused, so coming from Chicago, where anything can happen, I asked "is it a gay bar?" At which point he practically shouted "NO, IT"S JUST A BAR!" So I said "hey no offense I was just trying to figure your place out" and he quickly closed the door to, I assume, continue running his "business".I'm not sure what they do in there, but they don't seem to care much about running a "bar". This place is just spooky...

The bartender and the people there are so rude. You don't feel welcome walking in and the drinks are bad.

I'm a musician who played here for the first time this weekend....& it is GREAT!!! This place has new owners! They made some renovations but didn't change too much. If you miss old school bars this is the one for you. For years it was a private club but now it's open to the public. Pool tables, shuffleboard & LIVE MUSIC! The staff is awesome! If you love hole in the wall bars.... it's a must see! Didn't try the food...sorry.

The first review I laughed at, along with others including the overworked fellow that answered door. Scruffy by choice that fellow is overworked and one of the best , honest , tell you like it is and a friend til the end , or til they close , which happens every nite. But being an "out of towner " I can understand Jason's impression But having known the place off and on since I moved here since 1984 and The Cobbers members contributions to the community and the members themselves , whether through the golf tournament charities in past or the yearly families fed by member donations at Thanksgiving or the families adopted at Christmas ,or just a helping hand for a members medical bills . BUT if you weren't a member or knew a member you would never known . As for the second most recent review , sketchy and shady , LOL I guess its appeared that way since 1974 when it opened , THATS why we love it, redneck ? I guess that depends on their meaning. Theres people of all races , from all places and ALL sorts. And like "other places" everybody knows your name and before long you will know theirs and their story . The Cobber continues on like a family that it is and has been since 1974 .Many thanks for all the years the previous owners have gave us and all the memorable time spent there. Congratulations to the new owners .

Wow, what negative people that have never even been into the place!!! I had a great reaction when I went for the first time. Nice people, reasonable prices, nice staff/owner. I try to stop by every week or two. I travel a lot so I am not in town every week. I have always enjoyed the people there and have nice conversations. They are not all old people... but that would be OK with me if they were if they are always this nice. The crowd has always been 30-50 when I was there. They have pool tables and they do not charge to use them. They have several TV's that usually have sports on them. I have not ordered food yet so I cannot comment on that.
