A rare act, a missed turn and a Google maps error led us to discover this delightful restaurant featuring BBQ and more just a few miles from our new home in Duncan, SC.The rare act? Ceding lunch preference to my sister-in-law, who in this instance wanted a hamburger. I was feeling generous and agreed to her request.Fuddruckers was on the route home and I was prepared to settle for that but my wife missed the turn. Rather than double back I figured we could find another burger joint. Google maps led me to the intriguingly named Joe's Lake and Restaurant where hamburgers were prominently featured on the menu.But things turned doubtful when we made our way there only to discover what we expected to be Joe's was now named Sheltons Smoking Butts BBQ.Now don't get me wrong, the prospect of a BBQ joint just a mile or so from our house was serendipity in action for me but that cuisine is down the list for my wife. And hamburgers were the order of the day.So I was sent in to confirm the menu options at hand while my wife and her sister waited in the car. To my delight (and relief), burgers of every variety could be had along with an eclectic mix of BBQ offerings and full dinner plates.The fantastic smell of the place was a preview of the quality, variety and portion size of our order to come.Liz (my wife) and Tricia (her sister) got the burgers they wanted while I decided on something called the Smokehouse Dog thinking it would be a sausage of some sort.The burgers were HUGE with a nice char on the outside but juicy and flavorful inside. My dog was a delightful surprise in that it was surrounded by pulled pork with a topping of crispy onions. Happiness all around.Sides are diverse. My mac and cheese and peppery coleslaw did not disappoint. Liz and Tricia had garden salads and fries as their accompaniments. Both earned raves.We learned the back story of Joe's/Sheltons from the hostess and co-owner. Joe's was a local institution that she and her husband grew up with. When the place came up for sale they seized the opportunity to convert their food truck to brick and mortar. The lake is stocked for fishing for a fee but I'll take my food smoked and delicious!It's places like these that I live to discover and dine. I can't wait to work my way through the menu! And so will you!!

It's an unassuming place with really good food and nice portions. The owner makes everything in-house and has daily specials. The staff is small but super friendly, helpful and efficient. My hubby and I shared the sampler platter - the meats and sides were all delicious. He really liked the smoked sausage and mac and cheese ...my favorite was the ribs and collards. We will definitely be back.

I stopped by Sheltons a couple weeks back to check out the fishing lake. To my surprise, I turned in and also noted a sign for Sheltons Smoking BBQ. I looked over the nice pond. I plan to take my grand fishing there. I decided while there I would also check out the restaurant. The restaurant is nice, clean and cozy. The lakeside location adds to the character and atmosphere of the setting. Casual and hospitable would be proper terms.I had an opportunity to talk fishing and family with Tyler, the Owner. He's a great guy. All of the employees I engaged with at Sheltons were very courteous and helpful.The menu is written in chalk on a large board. And there are offerings to suit every palate. On separate visits I have tried the sausage, ribs, brisket, pulled pork and sides to include slaw, collard greens, loaded beans, green beans, and fried okra. Tyler and team knows exactly what they are doing. The ribs, with the dark smoke covering are among the best I've had. The brisket is tender and the pulled pork is very tasty. I rarely eat smoked sausage, but I love Sheltons sausage. It's cooked to perfection.There are many side offerings. Besides the ones I mentioned, there is fried squash, rice, potato crunch, macaroni and a long list of others. Each side I tried was well seasoned and reminiscent of real home cooking. All are generous in portion. It's great take home food.There are maybe 5-6 homemade sauce offerings for the Barbeque. I like the original and the mustard based sauces. But I happened upon their vinegar pepper sauce. It's my new fav.Pro tip; Try the Sampler Plate and prepare to eat it over a couple days!A drink comes with each entree. The tea is awesome!Pull into Sheltons. You will be glad you did.

Shelton's has been our family's go to for BBQ since before he opened the restaurant. Food is always good and portions are plentiful! My favorites are the bologna sandwich and the BBQ hotdogs. Can't remember what they are actually called. Beans are delicious and the fried pickles are perfect. I like they use spears instead of chips. Sheldon's slew of bbq sauces are great. JT and his wife are great people and service is always top notch.

Spent 40.00 for burnt food. I owned a bbq joint and know the difference between burnt and smoked. The Brisket was tough and dry and the meat and macaroni was dirty smoked. This is the second time I've been here and the 2nd time I've had a horrible experience. There won't be a 3rd.

Nice, relaxing atmosphere little pond to fish out of and some sweet southern hospitality. For dessert the banana pudding will knock your socks off. Smoke ribs are to die for the pulled pork was excellent. We had three different plates in our order smoked mac & cheese pretty good not like grandma made it but pretty good. We will be back

I'm a Carolina girl-North Carolina, that is. And the here is one thing you've got to know about us-we are SERIOUS about our BBQ! It's Eastern NC (vinegar and pepper based) or Western NC (think grocery store bottled sauce). This guy has it ALL! (Even that mustard based aberration that we would NEVER consider BBQ sauce!) All are made in house, and as good as any I've ever had; and better than most! I had the pulled pork with a side of potato salad and beans. The beans were good, with a vinegary, smoky "dressing ". The potato salad was made in house, just a bit too much mustard for me. The meat was sheer perfection-no fat, no gristle-just lean, smoked meat, like good BBQ should be! You add your own sauce-try one, try them all! If you leave hungry, it's your own fault!You can bet I will be returning! And often! Just make sure to check their hours and days before you go.
