This hidden gem in the Historic Montford neighborhood is one of the best ways to spend a summer evening in Asheville. They have been performing Shakespeare for free at their own amphitheatre for over 40 years and they do it very well for the price. The actors really make Shakespeare fun and alive. Half the fun isn't just the show, but the opportunity to bring your own picnic, beer, wine, and enjoy a summer night under the stars on a mountain hillside surrounded by a bunch of people who are all having a remarkably good time. You must go!The Montford Park Players also perform some extremely good indoor ticketed shows in the colder months. They don't always do Shakespeare, but tend to stick to more classical theatre. No one does classical theatre in town better than MPP.

We stumbled on this due to a write-up of things to do in Asheville on TripAdvisor. We brought our chairs and set up about half hour before the play started. We still got decent center seats. The play we say was the last night of the Merchant of Venice. One of the main male characters had hurt himself so they had a stand in. The play was about 3 hours long and my wife and I brought our 10, 12, and 15 year old. This recipe could have brought disaster but they enjoyed the play and sat without complaint. Overall, a big success and we all enjoyed the play. I was glad to donate money for a good performance and like that we could have backed out without paying $50 per ticket to see if our kids would be ok with the old English.

Great out door theater. If from out of town, best to reserve chairs for good seats. Sometimes it's hard to hear if in the back and when the actors are talking and don't face the audience. We saw their Peter Pan show. Our 8 and 12 enjoyed it. It's nice that you can bring your own drink/snacks.

Montford Park PlayersWhat a wonderful time we had. Bring your kids, bring your food and chairs or rent chairs. You take a short walk from the parking lot to the stage and then just be prepared to enjoy! Loved it!
