This theatre is discriminatory, unprofessional and unethical. They do not allow equal opportunities to all actors. I arrived for an audition where they claimed they could not find my resume which I submitted hours before auditioning. Also, the dance instructor and Johnny Hohenstein are terrible! They have the worst attitudes and need to find new jobs. They barred me from completing a full audition. Such a waste of time and energy for everyone!

Go here for local Community Theater.A true gem of a local venue for musical and theater performances.Supported by the local community. The original building was built in 1907 and was called Matthews school. It was grades 1 to 12.I went the 1st through six grade here and have many fond memories attached to this building.Kudos to the local community for supporting the local arts and preventing the wrecker ball from bringing it down.

Took the grandchildren to see The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Wonderful children's story put into a play. Good acting and scenery. They put on a good show. The playhouse is cosy and comfortable. Seats at least 200, maybe three hundred. We had what used to be called the nickle seats, on the right side, along the wall. It was OK as every seat has a good view of the stage.Prices were $11 for children and same for seniors! No more excuses about cost of taking kids to a play!It was just a play with an intermission. No refreshments but there are rest rooms. I don't know what this building was, but think it was a school building, even could have been part of an early little college. They have quite a schedule of plays, so tune into their web site. A good place for nice entertainment. A-OK

High quality community theatre that is professional quality! I've taken my kids to two productions so far--Charlotte's Web and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The productions are family friendly. It's a great deal close to home for around $12 a ticket.

I signed my 8 year old daughter up for what I thought would be a fun week of acting camp at Matthews Playhouse this summer. She came home frustrated on the first day, and like any parent we tried to work through it and stress the fun she would have. Things continued to get worse as the week went on so on Wednesday I reached out to the camp via email with three points of concern. I feel they completely disregarded my concerns and replied in a mocking and condescending manor. My husband went in to meet with them in person and again felt they were not adequately addressing our concerns. Here are the issues raised and their reply:1. There were more than twice the number of children enrolled in camp as there were parts. My daughter received a very small role (which is totally fine with us) however it was then split among 3 children. They mocked this point in email when I questioned why her part was divided among 4 children (as she told me it was) and received a reply "that actually there are only 3" children in that role. In person, they finally explained that the reason parts were split up between multiple children was because they allowed more than twice the # of children into camp than the roles were had available. They said in doing so they lengthened the play and added an additional director, none of which was ever explained to the parents or children.2. The children spend part of the day sitting around doing nothing while other children are practicing their parts. Because my child has such a tiny role she she spends a lot of time doing nothing. I signed my child up to be engaged and have fun, not spend her time sitting in a chair especially when camp is 6 hours a day and cost $275 for the week. In reply they said "We strive to give them the skills to 'listen, observe and learn as they watch other actors rehearse the play' (hence the sitting around, doing nothing). This camp will give her additional skills as a young person participating in school, church, sports or other community activities". I understand my child needs to sit still in school and church, I do not look to a week long summer camp to teach her these skills.3. My daughter came home on the 2nd day devastated and said she did not want to do acting anymore. She said they had been told by the director that the actors who were good were given larger roles and the children with smaller parts were not good actors and maybe acting is not for them. The children enrolled in this camp are 8-14, for an adult to tell them that at a camp is unacceptable. In multiple emails they ignored this point of concern and when discussed in person they indicated that is not what they said. Regardless of what was exactly said that is the understanding my daughter came home with which is unacceptable. Our daughter was pulled from camp and will not be returning to Matthews Playhouse again. On top of that Matthews Playhouse is refusing to issue any sort of refund and stands by the way this camp was conducted.

The Matthews Community Center was once the first public school in Matthews. After a huge resotration effort, the community center was born...and includes Matthews Playhouse.A very nice setup with comfortable seating with great views of the stage. The prices are quite reasonable and they have some very entertaining shows worth going to see.

My two daughters have been involved in the education programs at MPH for almost eight years now. We could not be more pleased with the instruction and experiences they have received there. Also, the performances are top notch!

I used to enjoy taking my children to see shows and my daughter developed an interest in the theatre. She attended various camps held by Matthews Playhouse. Additionally she was cast in 2 season productions and received callbacks for other auditions. However, her love of the theatre is gone and she has no interest in performing anymore. This is due to the horrible experiences in the 2 plays she was cast in. Both were directed by Robbie Jaeger who borders on being verbally abusive with the younger cast members. June Bayless, who runs the place, is just as bad. After she was cast we had to pay a fee, pay for her costumes, the parents were required to donate ALOT of time to the production. In exchange the parent volunteers are treated like children. I have money I could donate but would never donate here. If you have children and want them to have a positive experience as part of a production or help foster their interest in performing arts by camps or classes you are better off taking them to Fort Mill Community Playhouse or the Children's Theatre of Charlotte
