This interesting three-dimensional artwork stands in front of the Steele Creek subdivision of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. Entitled "Canopy," it is by artist Billy Lee. It was unveiled here in 2012 when this office opened. It is 1.5 inch thick painted aluminum that is 11 feet high by 8.5 feet wide standing on a short concrete plinth. The caption reads, "The image of a tree is one of the oldest symbols suggesting stability, shelter and protection, which is appropriate for a police station. It is used in context with one of the most fundamental forms in design, the circle, creating a contemporary hybrid bringing nature into the urban environment. The Arts & Science Council and the Public Art Commission. A Partnership with the City of Charlotte."There is a public parking lot to the south if you have business here.[Review 16514 overall - 3165 in North Carolina - 22 of 2022.]
