The Barnette's exterior might not look like much, but the food inside is what small town grills and hospitality is all about!

My wife and I had a running joke for a long time that this wasn't a real restaurant. She'd eaten here many times in the past with her parents, but I'd never been past when they'd looked open. Well, the cars park down the side, and you won't see a line out the door most of the time. That's because the man at the counter moves things along, and there's plenty of space to sit and enjoy your food. No, the tables aren't fancy, and they may need brushing off, but there's real kindness in this place, from the man in charge to the cooks to the other diners. You order at the counter and then get the food brought out to you. When we stopped in, our counter server told us he'd be closed the following week for July 4th and was offering everyone in the door in the hour or so before closing time a free piece of pecan pie or pound cake. My wife and I shared two pieces of pecan pie later in two sittings. My wife had a tasty plate of crispy chicken livers, not over cooked, which she loves, and macaroni and cheese and fresh, hand-breaded in corn meal and fried squash. I had an eight-ounce cheeseburger and fries. We both drank sweet tea, which tasted like tea and not sugar water. We ate for $17.08. If you're looking for 'fine dining' where you can pay a whole lot for a little on your plate, this is not your type of restaurant. If you want to call in an order of good, simple Southern food, then this is your place. If you want to order at the counter, sit down and then enjoy a quiet meal in the dining area, then this is your kind of place. It does exist, haha! Check it out! And prepare for a #FoodieScore!

My kind of place. I asked a group of locals where the best place in Shelby was to get hotdogs. They unanimously suggested this place. Very good. 3 hotdogs "All the way" for under $5. Heck, it might have been under $4. The perfect ratio of dogs to toppings. The chili was delicious and the slaw was properly tangy. Well assembled (which matters).Beautiful people and one of those places that you just like to patronize. Not pretentious. Very comfortable. Next time I'm going to have to get 2 dogs and a burger - can't see going and not getting at least two dogs but I gotta try that burger!
