This Andersonville staple is huge! If you go in the summer, bring a sweater because their AC is blasting. We had a large party (we had a reservation) and they did a great job servicing such a large group. They were even able to split up the check (we asked before ordering) which was super helpful! They have a huge menu with a range of veggie options to choose from. Most of the dishes seem to have meat or fish, but there are a few pasta dishes and pizza without either. The menu is huuuuge (like actually physically so big it was hard to make room for them at the table, but also very extensive menu options). They give you free bread and pizza bread (foccacia) before dinner. The foccacia was so addicting! Warm and fresh out of the oven with soft butter on the side - it was hard to not fill up before my meal. I ordered the gorgonzola gnocchi and it was even better than I expected. I loved the creamy sauce, and the gnocchi was stuffed with cheese! YUM!

Deep dish pizza is kinda too sour for me. Not a huge fan. You might like if you like a lot of tomato sauceThin cut pizza is not very crispy. Cheese is kinda waxy. Reasonable price though

Intro: On a Friday evening, I stopped by Calo Pizzeria Restaurant & Lounge for dinner with a big group (we're talking 12 people or so). We had a reservation so we were seated right when we arrived. Since we took a limo there (not my usual form of transportation haha!), I can't comment on the parking situation. This Italian restaurant is listed on Yelp's Top 100 Pizza Restaurants nationwide so I was excited to try it out. Ambiance (4/5): The restaurant is huge! Lots of rooms for dining plus a bar. It feels like a family Italian restaurant. Homey. No complaints here other than that the noise level can be high when you're there during peak hours since this is such a popular restaurant. It makes it a bit tough to hear what you're dining companions are saying. Service (4/5): It's always tough to take care of a large group. Which becomes even more amplified when the restaurant is busy too. Calo was packed while we were there. Despite how full the restaurant was and the size of our group, our waiter did a good job being attentive and taking care of us in a pretty timely manner. Drinks (4/5): They have a nice list of cocktails, beer, and wine. Full bar. We went with several bottles of wine for the table. Malbec and chardonnay. With it being an Italian restaurant, I think wine is the way to go. Food (4/5): I don't eat veal often. When I do, it's at an Italian restaurant. I saw it on Calo's menu so I couldn't say no. Before I continue talking about the veal, I forgot to mention that they also start you off with an assortment of bread including a pizza flatbread. I always appreciate complimentary bread at Italian restaurants! Now let's get back to the veal. You can choose your sauce for your veal (three options). I went with the lemon sauce. And you can choose pasta or potatoes as your side. I went with the pasta with meat sauce. While the veal wasn't a huge portion, it was delicious. I love lemon-based sauces and this one complimented the tender veal perfectly. The side of pasta with meat sauce was also delectable. The sauce stood out here. We ended our meal with a couple of shared desserts. I took one bite of the tiramisu. My favorite dessert and it's done well at Calo. Overall: As long as you're okay with fighting the crowds and the noise level if you're going at a peak hour, and as long as you're okay with paying a premium (maybe it's just Chicago prices I'm not used to), you'll have a quality meal at Calo with good service to compliment it.

I love Calo!! The wine selection is amazing, the pasta is soooo fresh, and the service is excellent. The mushroom truffle ravioli is my favorite and I've ordered it like three times. I've also had the Pappardelle Con Funghi (can you tell that I love mushrooms? lol)Recently I ordered a cheese pizza for delivery and it didn't disappoint. Great food, I highly recommend.

Honestly, the service has never impressed me. Sure, the food is good. But the server was so impersonal and after we closed out (with a large tip) but sat at the table chatting for a while, no one refilled our waters. We felt rushed out and like he cared more about turning over the table than serving us (even though the restaurant was not completely full at the time).

The pasta is great here (portions are huge), and the pizza bread they give you for free is to die for. But the ambiance can be...bizarre. They tend to play music that makes you feel like you're in a dance club, rather than an Italian restaurant. Recently when we went the music became so loud, it was hard to hear the person I was with, and kind of miserable. They eventually turned it down (I'm guessing someone complained), and it was better after that. Overall a great Italian restaurant, just please turn down the music; this isn't a club!

A neighborhood GEM. I've been coming here for years, nay, decades. The food is always reliably great, but every now and then, I eat something here that knocks my socks off.Last night was one of those nights. First of all - drinks. My BF and I order martinis, since we LOVE the bar, and this is a bar that sorta suggests a martini. It's that sort of look, and it's always appealing. This restaurant has a pretty traditional look, but that's part of it's charm. Then, the food. Felt like some calamari, but neither of us is a fan of the breaded variety. Enter Calamari alla Griglia. OMG. We were both knocked out by this simple, perfect dish.4 or 5 plump, juicy calamaris, no tentacles! Nestled on a bed of very fresh, not overcooked spinach, and some cannellini beans. Add some vinegarette (which tastes great mopped up with some of their delicious bread). My gawd, this was delicious. It's billed as an appetizer, but I'd come back here and eat just this for dinner, it was so good. Stellar service at the bar, it's why we always sit at the bar. Great job, Calo, please always stay here in Andersonville.

Our group of six had reservations and were seated right away, drinks were ordered and served and then began the decision making process of what to eat because there are so many options! It's been a while since I had lasagna and this was an excellent choice- A large portion of cheesy, meaty, noodley goodness with leftovers to take home! I had a pomegranate martini and it was delicious. This was a great spot for dinner, but it's also a great place for drinks!
