Jiang Nan offers a refined dining experience with dark lighting and a fancy vibe--think white tablecloth service. The staff was very attentive with refilling water, changing plates, and bringing extra bowls as new dishes arrived.They start with a small salad with chili oil dressing that was very good. Wish they gave more, though I probably could've asked! The pineapple beer was a highlight--absolutely amazing! It's labeled as serving size for two, but we were able to share it among four people. The jellyfish in vinegar was good, though the portion was small. It's even better with chili oil which you can ask for. The pork and crab soup dumplings were fantastic. Soup dumplings are a must-try. The pan-fried pork buns were soft with flavorful pork inside. The sautéed eggplant was incredibly soft and delicious, one of the best versions of the dish I've had. The seafood fried rice was average. It had a decent amount of seafood, but nothing stood out. On the other hand, the deep-fried bullfrog was super crispy and crunchy and VERY SPICY!The whole Peking duck was delicious, with perfectly crispy skin. I loved making each bite, and I highly recommend adding the soup made from the duck carcass for an extra $15--it's worth it. I personally would not recommend the dessert here. I got the sweet jelly and mixed fruit in yogurt and there is better dessert in Chinatown. Overall, this is one of the best Chinese food I've had in a finer dining setting. I'd definitely recommend it, especially for those looking for an experience. I was able to get seated at lunchtime without a reservation, but needed one for a weekend dinner.

Growing up in China, I'm used to restaurants being holes in the walls - no frills, simple, just there to give you food. So, I was really curious to see how JiangNan intends to transform that experience to one of class and sophistication, given its NYC location's reputation of being a Michelin Star restaurant. Stepping into the restaurant, you can already tell it's not like any other Chinese restaurant you can find in the nearby Chinatown; the interior was well decorated and dimly lit, very much suggestive that it's suppose to be more "fancy." Servers were very attentive, too!Now onto the food, what you've all been waiting for.The crispy fried eels were hot and fresh. Thin and crispy with that delicate fishy flavor you expect from eel. The green beans were surprisingly delicious! Smokey and stir-fried to perfection; not at all waxy, actually had a satisfying snap and crunch to it. The minced meat added lots of great savory notes!That pork belly was phenomenal! I'm talking layers upon layers of rich, delicate fat intertwined with tender meat, coated in a thick, sweet black tea sauce. Some pieces were wonderfully tender; others were not as much, unfortunately. Each piece is sort of like a coin flip. But hey! It looks so beautiful!The smoked pork neck meat: eh. It was cool how it was presented in a drawer, and that they used a blow torch to smoke it in front of you. But it just tasted like your typical smoked ham on a Christmas Day. Plus, for $30, you are not getting a lot! Definitely a lot of better and more filling options.Finally, the rice cakes were wonderfully chewy, like mochi! The brown sugar sauce paired nicely with it.Overall, is this a good Chinese restaurant? Yeah! But honestly, the flavors of the food didn't really surpass that you can find at any traditional Chinese restaurant, so you're really coming here for the experience. But was it a good experience? Yes, yes it was. For that, I give it 4 stars.

Excellent! We came here after a Wednesday matinee at Emerson. Very few customers there (around 5:00 pm), but the place got pretty busy about 45 minutes later. Throughout, the service was great. Food arrived timely and water glasses were kept filled throughout. The food was fabulous. We started with the Hot and Sour Soup with Seafood. It was $12.95, which seemed like a lot of money, but it did serve two portions and was delicious. Also had the Chicken and Mushroom Soup Dumplings - four substantial dumplings that, again, were really tasty. For entrees, we had the Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, and Crispy Shrimp with Honey Walnuts. Both were delicious. I would say that the Eggplant might have been the best I ever had.

The place is pretty dark when you first walk in, but you're greeted by all the servers and staff. We ordered stir-fried string beans, half a peking duck, pineapple beer, spicy wontons, and soup dumplings. This was way too much food for 2 people. The pineapple beer was so good. A little bit on the sweeter side. The spicy wontons and soup dumplings were both really good but it did not justify the price. The Peking duck was okay. This one wasn't that crispy. The string beans were good and a little bit spicy. It's located right next to Boylston station. I wouldn't come here regularly due to it's high price points but would come back for special occasions.

We came here for Peking Duck and surely it didn't disappoint! We had no reservation because they won't do reservation unless it's more than 4 people. We waited 50 mins and it was worth the wait. We ordered a whole duck with an add-on salted pepper duck bones. Additional, we got truffle fried tofu and crab & row on rice. Presentation was great and the best surprise was my drink. It was sooo good!! Yuzu Blossom (order it!). We will definitely come back to try more dishes for sure.

I came here to celebrate belated Father's Day and Mom's birthday. No, wait for Tuesday at 7 pm. This is my 2nd time coming; the food still tastes good except for the lack of air conditioning inside during the extreme heat weather. Peking duck is a must and add-on soup. I ordered the deep-fried striped bass with sweet and sour sauce this time. It is delicious and goes well with the rice, but they added too much vinegar to the sauce. Shrimp with dragon tea was refreshing, but I wish they had used bigger shrimp instead of fried rice shrimp. The sauteed crab meat was so delicious that we needed to order an extra rice. The braised pork belly with black tea was not too oily, and it melted in your mouth. The service was fantastic.This place is pricy for the portion, but it is worth it. It is not a regular Chinese restaurant, and each dish was nicely presented.

Came here for Mother's Day lunch and made a reservation over the phone a few weeks in advance. I do wish they had online reservations, as it was fairly hard to reach them on the phone. We were running late due to traffic and road closures, so I really appreciate them being accommodating and still honoring our reservation despite our tardiness! We got a half order of the Peking duck, the smoked pork, cabbage in chicken broth, crab XLB, garlic eggplant with minced meat and pork belly bamboo soup. All of it was good, though some in my party said the Peking duck was sweeter than they preferred. We also got complimentary dessert which was the peach gummies with tremella (Mother's Day special I believe). The dessert and peach tea we got were both barely sweet, perfect for your Asian parents and a-yis who think everything is overly sweet! The one miss that I do remember is that we were seated in the very back of the restaurant, which was fine, except for the fact that the waiters and bus staff all hung around there when not tending to a table so it did feel a bit awkward having staff looming over us for periods of time throughout our meal.

This restaurant has been on my bucket list for a long time and we just got to try it yesterday.1. Food: 8.5/10We ordered Stir-fried string beans with minced meat, Braised pork belly in tea sauce, Peking duck (half) and Sliced ox tongue.We enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. Peking duck was delicious, but we didn't think it was super unique or anything. We really enjoyed the pork belly and the string beans. We had mixed feelings for the ox tongue. While it was good with great spice, the meat still has a strong smell for me. 2. Ambience & Service: 8/10The place is small but we got seated at a big table so we felt super spacious. Cute and simple decor.Our water kept getting refilled without us needing to ask. We had to flag down the server to get our bill though, but overall they were efficient.3. Location & Price: 7.5/10This is centrally located in Chinatown, which is in the downtown area of Boston. Not a whole lot of parking so if you come with a car, that would be tricky.The location is also close to Boston Commons, so you can certainly walk around after eating as well.Pricing is fair for Boston, but obviously on the higher side for Chinese food. We didn't think it was unreasonable though.Overall: 8.5/10We will come back to try more dishes!!

Upscale Chinese restaurant with lovely decor (think: tall ceilings, tan leather booths, small flower or candle centerpieces on every table, and mirrored walls) and attentive service. Located in a prime spot next to Boston Common, but on the pricier side for Chinese food (average $20-30 per dish), especially given the smaller portion sizes.All of the dishes are done well, but nothing has blown me away.The peking duck is worth getting for the experience, though they used to light the full duck on fire and carve the meat table-side and don't seem to be doing that anymore.The sautéed crab is also a cool presentation, served with large crab shells containing the crab sauce, which the server mixes into rice for you. The end result is a soft and yummy flavored rice, though it doesn't seem to contain much crab meat.Overall, flavors and portion sizes are not worth the price for me, but you're also paying for location, ambiance, service, and presentation. I would come back again if suggested by other people.

I went while in vacation the place is beautiful. However we did have a difficult time with the chopsticks. It was the first time using them so we order forks eventually. I will just say it was a struggle at the beginning but worth it. We order a whole duck and braised pork belly with beans. Let me just say my husband does not eat vegetables but he absolutely loved that beans in the pork belly. The duck was amazing. But there is one dish which has my heart on a hold. Which I was told was the house cabbage. Which you can see in the picture. If you are the owner. I would love to order the cabbage if I could. That's how much I loved it. If possible i would order weekly. I lives 8+ hours away. And there is none near me. But that cabbage was been on my memory since I left. The service was so far the best we received in Boston and the food too.
