I'm not sure since I haven't been here before, but I feel the food must of gone downhill. I remember the lines and constantly fully packed restaurant all the time. Hey, we can't expect things to be the same. Looking at photos of the same dish posted before it looks like portions are also smaller. It can be inflation etc, but I don't know if I would give it a try again even if the portions were the same. We came in on a Saturday night and there was only 1 other table that was taken...I should have taken it as a sign of what was to come. Portions are less compared to years before, but the food left something to be desired. The food was bland and mediocre, nothing to rave home about. Really disappointed after waiting 8-10 years to try this...

I didn't know what to expect when I first heard about this Italian-Japanese fusion restaurant, however, Bistro Kaz did not disappoint!Ambiance/Service:Our party of 4 went at 5:30pm on a Thursday and there was no wait for a table. The inside is pretty small with 2-4 person tables plus 4 bar seats. I saw a party of 6 inside and by looks of the tables, they could probably accommodate a party of up to 8. Outside, there were three 2-person tables. It looked like our server was the only one working the whole floor but still, she was very nice and attentive. The pizza and salmon belly came by quickly but the pastas took maybe 10-15 min longer.Food:-Unagi Eel Pizza ($20): eight square slices-- perfect to share! I'd get this again. -Miso Marinated Salmon Belly ($20): served with rice. My husband says he enjoyed this plate and would get this again next time.-Creamy Sea Urchin with Salmon Roe Pasta ($36 for market price): Served with garlic bread. The flavor was very tasty, though I wish it could have been a little bit creamier. There was a decent amount of salmon roe though not too much of the sea urchin. Overall:Very interesting flavor profile but Bistro Kaz delivered. I enjoyed the dishes that our group tried, and would love to come back to try out more!

A quaint restaurant amidst the busy Convoy streets. The menu had a fun hodgepodge of dishes that fused Japanese and Italian cuisine. There was a large parking lot of front with additional spots in the back if that was full. There were two small tables out front but majority of the seats were inside and at the bar. Our server was great albeit the food took a while to come out. =ORDERED=*Ceviche: a strange option but I was stunned by the tastiness and portion size. This appetizer was easily shared between two and the seafood was vibrant. There were big chunks of octopus, shrimp, mango, tomato and cucumber covered in a sweet and acidic lime marinade. There was a cup of Japanese mayo on the side in which I'm going to start adding to my ceviche from now on. *Uni and Salmon Roe Pasta: priced at market price, hence $36 during my visit. The pasta was nicely al dente. I wished more sauce came with the amount of noodles but it was very flavorful. The uni flavor was concentrated and prominent. Although this has to be one of the more expensive options in SD, this dish was executed the best of those I've tried. Each dish tasted great and was well developed. While the menu is more expensive, Bistro Kaz is serving unique dishes that you won't find elsewhere in SD.

I enjoyed this place a lot. The squid ink paella and the cod rod pasta were both enjoyable. Next time, I would get the pasta again and try the pizza. The lady's not friendly, but maybe that's her style, it's fine.

LUNCH is the best deal as they have a lunch set menu. Comes with salad + drink + soup. But it's still roughly $25/person, which can get a LITTLE EXPENSIVE for lunch. Food is delicious. Japanese style Italian food. Service is fine. Nothing to complain about there. Environment is clean.

I brought my Italian mother in law to try this restaurant out. We ordered a small house salad, a cabbage wrapped meatballs, a burger steak and a chicken pizza. All the foods are very tasty, the portion here isn't that big so these amount of foods are right to us. The service is nice and friendly. And the restaurant feels cozy and quiet. It's perfect for a date.

They may have the best lunch deal in town. Various types of entree or pasta that comes with soup, salad, and a beverage of choice. I was super sad when Zen Curry closed. But after discovering the katsu curry here, I think I'm good now. Their food always comes out so hot and fresh, and it has a very comforting, homey feel.I love the ambiance here too. The smooth jazz in the background just feels right. haha.

I absolutely love Bistro Kaz! They are the epitome of Asian (Japanese) comfort food. They're one of the few handful of places that my husband (who's Japanese, so he can speak to the authenticity) and I will frequent on a regular... and we'll sneak it in separately too. I write this post as I enjoy my go-to meal (meatloaf with demi-glaze sauce) on a date brunch with me, myself & I... smooth jazz playing in the background, immersed in a calm ambiance. Their food never disappoints. I find their lunch combos (includes soup, salad, and a drink) to be a good deal. I'm always full by the end, always content! :) 10/10, would recommend!

I came here alone for lunchtime on a Thursday. There were only two other parties seated. Cute spot decorated like a cafe/bistro. I got the lunch special squid ink pasta which included a salad and soup. The salad was a standard greens mix with asian sesame dressing and the soup was minestrone. The minestrone was better than I expected to be honest, but it's definitely not traditional so don't expect that. Squid ink pasta was a good portion for the price and came with a small piece of garlic bread. I found it to be kinda bland and disappointing. Service was good and food came out fast. If I come here again, I'd try to order something else because the rest of the menu was interesting and well priced.
