I am beyond disappointed with my recent visit to this restaurant. They blatantly advertise that kids under 10 eat for free, stating "all day every day." However, when the bill came, I was charged for my children's meals. When I questioned this, I was blatantly informed that only one child eats free per paying adult entree. Apparently, this place penalizes families with more than one child. What's worse, the food was subpar, especially when compared to Firsra de Reyes across the street, where we dined the other night. The quality and taste here were nowhere near as good. Save your money and avoid this rip-off. There are much better dining options in the area.

Barra Barra is a colorful but tourist-oriented restaurant that is a hit in Old Town. The ambience is nice and the service is good, but the food is nothing exceptional. That said, portions are generous and the meals are filling, just not gourmet. For many foreigners, it might be their first experience with Mexican food.We sat somewhat uncomfortably next to a Japanese family of four last night at Barra Barra. They spoke no English, and it was interesting to watch how they ordered. Barra Barra provides lovely chips, salsa, and black bean dip for the table when you arrive. These folks were not too sure what to make of that. They tasted the bean dip and mild salsa tentatively, dipping the tiniest corner of the tortilla chip into the sauce as if it was pure ghost pepper sauce. When the meal arrived, they stared at it curiously. Like, where to I start. I had never seen a rice taco before, but the teenager made one - whatever. They devoured every scrap of food, which was amazing given the portion sizes. Anyway, it was interesting to discretely watch and made for an entertaining dining experience.Barra Barra is a solid choice for some decent Mexican food. Old Town does not go out of its way to provide superb cuisine, but this is to be expected in a tourist area, I guess.

I went just when they opened. Lots of staff moving around in preparation. I was the only one in the restaurant, but it still took a long time for somebody to come take my order and fulfill it. But the wait was worth it! I got the vegetarian empanadas, and they were superb. Plus the ambience is magnificent. They have a large outdoor patio as well. It is in Old Town San Diego, which is a great destination for history, dining and boutique shopping.

Everything about Barra Barra was beyond what I expected. My friends shared with me that there's a mass birthday celebration every 5th day of the month. Unfortunately they got covid but I invited another August birthday friend and definitely enjoyed ourselves. We sat outside and had a nice breeze throughout dinner. Our server was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. My friend order a combo enchilada plate which she loved. I got my usual fajitas plate but this one had the works and it was much better than I expected. So delicious and so fresh, like homemade Mexican food. Looking forward to coming back again!

Born and Raised San Diego native so I've had every single spot you could probably think of.Also close to 300 pounds so you could probably say I have a strong appetite. It's rare that I give reviews but we all know how quick bad news can spread but nobody ever acknowledges the good. The service by Yolanda G and the food was nothing short of amazing. Highly recommended if you're thinking a guaranteed hit with great environment.

Restaurants in Old Town cater to tourists so they don't seem to really care about making good food...or margaritas. Our party ordered two Cadillac margaritas and they were sent back. Then we ordered 2 house margaritas and they were no good either. The sweet and sour mix was bad or just cheap stuff. When you're paying $15 for a margarita, you would think they would use better ingredients. Nope! And we went here because there was no wait. Maybe the places with a line are better.

We go there every time we are in San diego. Old town is cool and the food is great and Tony is the man, I think he's the manager. Big portions and the tortillas are made right there in front of you...cool outdoor seating if you want or they have inside too. It always feels like you're on vacation when you're there, maybe that's just because I'm always on vacation when I go there but...i always feel like im in a clint eastwood spaghetti western when i eat there, ols school Mexico motif...I''ve been to San Diego three times in the last couple years and we always hit this place up. Just ask for Tony and talk to him about surfing in Baja. Pic below is my daughter and her friend stoked because the food just came.

My party and I went to Barra Barra Saloon on a Saturday evening and we didn't have to wait and we were seated outside. They had heaters for outdoor sitting which was nice. I ordered the Barra Barra Pork Carnitas Platter and it was pretty good. I wish the meat throughout was evenly fatty and delicious since some pieces were drier than others. I also wish that there was more guacamole, pico de gallo, and rice. Both the guacamole and the pico de gallo were very good. Overall just wish that the portions were more even since the whole plate of food is a lot.

Disappointed. Waited forever for a waiter to come see us. We were so thirsty but the food came out before the drinks! The food was unimpressive. Don't get fooled by the decor! Thought we'd get some authentic Mexican food because the ambiance was great. But the food (ordered the Baja Shrimp entre) was microwaved rice with frozen peas and corn. Zero taste. And the beans were canned beans!!! The five shrimp were good. But, to pay $24 for that plate is crazy to me. Won't do it again. It's a tourist trap, like so many other reviews here mention as well. Too bad.
