I walked into a packed bar, fellas shooting pool in the back, and a seat-yourself dining room with an open table for me. On a Monday night, when a large portion of the industry is closed, Schultz's was fully open for business.I started with a bowl of MD crab soup, and ordered the 6oz Jumbo Lump Crab cake and Fried Shrimp combo. 90 seconds after doing so, I was presented with a piping hot bowl of soup and a steamy loaf of sliced white bread. If I had no self-control, I would have eaten the entire loaf, along with the cold salty spreadable container of butter that accompanied it. You've been warned. The soup teleported me back to family crab feasts. Could it have had more crab meat? Yes. Should it have? Nope. It's not a crab cake in broth, it's a home made, beefy vegetable soup with crab and an "old bay" style seasoning. Not too spicy, but my sinuses were clear before I finished the bowl.I burnt my tongue on the mashed potatoes and perfectly thick gravy. It was hotter than I expected, good job Shultz's and shame on me. Fortunately, I didn't exactly burn myself, no taste buds were damaged, or if they were, I didn't notice. The coleslaw, clearly homemade, is slightly sweet and balanced with an abundance of green pepper. The fried shrimp were succulent, butterflied tail-on shrimp in a light batter that could easily work on oysters as well. And there were plenty of them. Now, you need to know that filling in a crab cake is a necessary evil. You can't fry or broil a cup of crabmeat and expect a delicious outcome. (Well, surely you can, but the result is not a crab cake) What you want is a mix of mayo, egg, bread crumbs and spices that elevates the crab and allows you to form a presentable patty. What you don't want is to lose the crabmeat to the breading. Clearly, the kitchen staff at Schultz's know this and they execute it perfectly. They produced a beautiful crab cake, over loaded with huge chunks of backfin that are barely held together with a delicious and relatively light batter. If you're outside of the fine state of Maryland, you will struggle to find an amazing dish loaded with "blue crab." If you're in the state of Maryland, you can find crabmeat everywhere, from 5 star establishments to corner stores. But they're certainly not all amazing.Tonight, here at Shultz's, I enjoyed amazing.

Our friends always like to go to Schultz's with us for their Sour Beef and Dumplings on Sundays. So, we got together for an early dinner on the first Sunday of the New Year. Kelly, our server, was welcoming and attentive as always. Our friends started with a cup of Maryland Crab soup and a half dozen raw oysters - both of which they really enjoyed. Three of us ordered the Sour Beef and Dumplings. The beef is so tender, the gravy is so delectable, and the dumplings are huge with a little crispy edge that is so good. Each order of sour beef came with a side; we had a side salad, Cole slaw, and broccoli. My husband ordered a hot roast beef sandwich with a side salad and French fries. We were all very pleased with our dinners and service. If you have never tried Schultz's for their Sour Beef, you should!

Service wasn't great. They weren't too busy either for that to be an excuse. Crabs were mediocre and the crab soup was pretty good, thankfully. Personally I get better service and better food at Costa's.

This is just a beautiful, well established restaurant in the community. We went for a weekday lunch, a Tuesday for the $3 off steamed shrimp...med or jumbo, you chooseI chose the jumbo, and they were nothing less than jumbo. My received plate had 15. Cocktail sauce and onions. It was fantastic and worth the wait.My husband ordered the shrimp salad (cold), and it came with 2 sides. Since the macaroni salad was not ready, he had double potato salad. It was good. The hiccup came when his dish was cold. It was served nearly immediately, and I had to wait for mine to be steamed. It resulted in a huge problem of 2 meals out of sync at the same table. He was finished with his, and I was still waiting. To me, this is a major irritant. We are there together to eat lunch together. Deleted comment. All the food was top-notch, the timing, way off, a server should know better. We will try again and will speak up if the cold vs hot arises again.

Inside it looks like it is a pub, with pool. It was quite packed. Not much room to wiggle around.Food is ok. The wings are a bit dry. Crab is quite small. I thought I ordered medium as it was in the middle of the list. But since it cost $37.50 for 6, I guess the price justify the size. The bisque was very heavy. I got full just earing the crab bisque. Kids love the chicken nuggets, but not the fries nor apple sauce.Waitress is very attentive. (+1). Kept asking if we need anything. However, I saw that a lot of tables have free bread, I asked for it. They said it only comes with platter. (-1). Not sure if it was good as it look very white, and there were a lot of unfinished bread in other tables. I thought it would be great to eat with the bisque. Oh well...

I met with 13, guys which retired from the beer, wine, and liquor industry, for lunch. Schultz's is a bar/restaurant located in a residential neighborhood in East Baltimore. It is known for its selection of seafood, steamed crabs in particular. On this Wednesday the special was SourBeef and dumplings, which several of us ordered. They were amazing! The beef was fork tender, the gravy perfectly thickened and not too sour. It came which 3 good sized dumplings which seemed to have been flash fried after being boiled. They were the best ever. Service was top notch as our waiter was also the manager. Pricing was such a great value, I look forward to returning when the crab season begins to get better.

Man o man, if your ever in Essex, make it your justice to stop in Schultz's just once for some crabs. Established in 1969, Schultz's is a classic Baltimore seafood staple, that specializes in delicious home-made entrees and Chesapeake style crab cakes. What I love about this place is that you feel right at home. The food and service was phenomenal. We mainly came for some crabs last Sunday and they were nice and hot and beer was good and cold. It was 4 of us, so we just did 2 dozen crabs which was plenty for us, along with a plethora of other bites such as the steam shrimp, the crab fluff, their Maryland crab soup( not pictured) and the snickers cheesecake( not pictured) but was also delicious. And their price point for crabs was right on the money, with the current inflation with everything, Schultz's is the way to go for crabs. I will definitely return whenever I'm in the Essex area. Until next time
