Miss Toya's Southern Kitchen

Went here after a dentist appmnt, new to the area. Really glad I tried this place as this was such a cozy comfort spot for delicious cozy food! I would def recommend coming here if you're in the area. The bread pudding with the ice cream that came with it was so good The service was great as the lady at the register was kind in letting me know which option I should try along with the people in front.

Ambiance was not what I expected. Food was hit when ordered and served. The pasta chicken was ordered by one guest and was good as was the blackened salmon. Another ordered the chicken sandwich and said the heat was just right. In ordered the shrimp and crab browned butter rice and forgot to hold the green peppers but it was still good. The during. Old bay lemon pepper wings were cooked just right!! Service was good as there was only one person working the entire place.

This was my second time here. I was meeting a friend for a late lunch. We were served quickly and checked on often (server was Imani, she was great). I got the salmon bites, Caesar salad (side), and the cornbread. The salmon bites were good but I could've been fine with slightly less sauce. The cornbread was delicious! The honey glaze...I could've just had that. The salad, however, left much to be desired. The dressing had an interesting aftertaste but the cheese was a dusting which was slightly unique. The restaurant wasn't crowded but started to pick up when we were leaving closer to dinner time. The location is good with lots ofplaces nearby if you want dessert elsewhere too.

Great restaurant and great location. The food along with the service was spectacular. GIGI was the server for us. Clone her because she knows.. very attentive, knowledgeable of the menu, outgoing and some humor to boot..only thing i didnt like about tbe experience was that shes a Commanders fan.. guess you cant be perfect. Wowo! What a delightful delicious lunch today , got the chicken sandwich and gumbo. I loved the Cole dressing on the sandwich

My husband and I were in the Rio area and decided to go to Miss Toya's. When we arrived the employees were pleasant and handed us our menus since we took our food to go. My husband had the gumbo with added crab and I had the lamb chops, yams and macaroni and cheese. The was delicious! The service was fast. We even ordered desserts as well. For dessert we had the banana pudding and the rum cake. The place is small, but cozy and quiet. It reminds me of the family carry outs in Nola. I would definitely recommend and will be going back soon

TL; DR: 10/10 recommend this place and want to come back, when you want southern cookin come try this in Rio!As soon as you walk in there seems to be two counters, which was a little confusing, one for carry out and one for dine in. You walk to the carry out counter to say you're dining in and they say sit anywhere while giving you cutlery and a menu. They have minimalist decor with neon accent lighting of a chicken and "feed your soul" with gray and red accent colors which is great because it isn't overstimulating.We got one entree, one appetizer, and four sides which fed the both of us while not making us too full. The food is southern, but not heavy. While we were there, maybe 90 minutes in total, about three to five groups of people (ranging from 2-5 people) came in, looked at the menu then left. One was a family and the others were couples, we weren't sure why they left because everything we ate was delicious. Lots of people placed carry out orders while we were there, which was nice to see their quick service on that too, all in all I think most people waited 20 minutes which is great I think.Our server Khadija S. was awesome! Very kind and shared she really enjoys the restaurant and wishes more people would stay to try the food. 10/10 recommend this place and want to come back!

4/7/24We met up with friends in the area.And saw soul food, so we went in Service is lacking... We sat waiting for someone to come over and at least give us water and the menu. Hubby ended up going up front to get the menu. Then we waited for a while... We had been enjoying catching up. It wasn't until we started to feel hungry and realized no one came over. Our friend went up to ask about service. After several minutes, a young woman came over to get our order and realized we hadn't even got water. Food took a while to come out as well. All in, the 4 of us spent over 2 hours here. At least we had time to catch up. I think if it was just hubby and I, we would have walked out and went elsewhere.Berry Lemonade and Southern Punch were goodCorn Bread was goodDeviled Eggs with Fried Shrimp was different but turns out really good!Smothered Porkchops were different than how I'm used to, but it was amazing. Collard Greens were good. The Cajun rice was not.1 friend had the fried chicken, but it took longer than all of our dishes that he had to ask to make sure they didn't forget it...Other friend had Mac and Cheese instead of rice and said it was really salty.Rum Cake was enjoyed by all.We enjoyed the company and several of the dishes.Service needs to be overhauled...If I lived in the area, I would probably stick to take out...

My husband was in the area so he picked up some banana pudding to bring home to me. Great flavor but there were only two vanilla wafers. Add more and it'll be a 5.

This review is about the irresponsible service, not the quality of the food since I didn't get a chance to eat the food in the first place.The restaurant was supposed to cater a lunch for work. Staff were offered several choices of protein and sides. However, lunch started arriving over three hours late when many staff had gone home already (and it took over an hour to deliver all of it). Not only was the food so late, it wasn't even what was ordered! They did last minute substitutions on their own! On top of that, the food was not labeled at all, so people had to open the boxes to see what each one contained. This took a long time. There are several things that the restaurant should have done differently:1. They should not have offered or accepted to cater lunch for a workplace if they are not able to fulfill a large order.  2. If they originally thought that they would be able to fulfill the order, but then realized that they couldn't, they should have contacted the workplace right away. Instead of calling to say that they couldn't do it, they kept saying that "the food will be ready soon." This prevented the organizers from coming up with an alternative and therefore many people were very hungry!  3. They should refund the money since they didn't fulfill the contract. They have not offered to do so.Even if the quality of the food was excellent (and I wouldn't know if it was since I didn't get my food), I would never recommend this restaurant due to the appalling lack of professionalism, total disregard for those of us who were waiting for the food for hours, and complete negligence in fulfilling the contract.
