I was excited to try Toya Southern Kitchen, but the ambiance was quite different from what I expected. The space felt a bit cold and stark, lacking the warm, homey Southern charm I anticipated from the name. The prices were also a little higher than I expected. On the positive side, our server was very friendly and gave great recommendations. The portions were generous, and the food itself was tasty. We tried the herb chicken and the catfish and grits--both well-seasoned and satisfying. A standout was the honey cornbread, which is made fresh and definitely worth ordering.Overall, it was an okay experience, but I'm not sure I'd return for dine-in service. Maybe takeout next time.

I've been wanting to check out this place & I was pleased with my experience. Good vibes, good music, good service, & good food. I started with the surf n turf egg rolls. I love a good steak and cheese egg roll, and adding a lil' lump crab meat & sweet chili sauce never hurt nobody. There was a generous portion of steak, a lil' crab meat, just enough cheese, and everything worked well together. I don't think I would put chili sauce on a steak and cheese sandwich but for some reason, it tastes so good on egg rolls. For my entrée, I had the fried catfish, mashed potatoes, and broccolini. First of all, let's talk about these healthy portions. There were 2 big pieces of catfish with plenty of mashed potatoes and a good amount of vegetables. I love it when the chef isn't afraid to use seasoning. I didn't have to add salt or pepper to anything. The dish came with a side of hot sauce, but I opted for other sauces instead. I believe the server brought my some aioli and a Creole sauce, and both paired well with the fish. I didn't have any complaints about my meal. My brother let me taste his seafood mac & cheese and it was delicious. Maybe I'll order it on my next visit.I was a little disappointed with my drink. I believe my brother ordered a hurricane and I had a blueberry mule mocktail. For $12, they should've put that drink in a bigger glass. I know that little cup is what's traditionally used for a mule so in that case, they should've lowered the price. It was a good mocktail, but for that price I definitely wouldn't order it again. For dessert I had a slice of banana cheesecake, covered with banana slices, crushed cookies, and drizzled with caramel. This scrumptious dessert was the perfect ending to my delicious meal. If I remember correctly, my server mentioned that an external baker does all their desserts. Whoever it is did a great job.

Went back and again they did not disappoint. The food is always to cry for. The service is always welcoming and the vibes are always good. I suggest you try several things on the menu. It's honestly too hard to just pick one. There's a garage nearby so parking isn't a big deal.

My boyfriend and I came to Miss Toyas for Valentine's weekend brunch. It was our first time coming to the restaurant. We had a reservation but we were a few minutes late because of the construction on Georgia ave. Upon arrival the hostess sat us after waiting a few minutes. The seats in the back room are very close together and the two seater tables are really small. I asked if we could be seated in the area by the bar or at one of the booth tables. We were told no because there were reservations. I mentioned we also had a reservation, I was told our reservation was cancelled because we were late. We opted to sit at the bar so that we had adequate space. The bartenders were absolutely outstanding, both of them were very friendly and gave good recommendations for menu items. We started with the crab stuffed shrimp and I wished I had ordered it for myself. It was very flavorful and generous portion, the corn salsa was a nice addition. For entrees we ordered the crab cake Benedict and the lamb chops. My boyfriend loved the Benedict which came with a generous portion of grits. The ordered the lamb chops medium with a side of scrambled eggs. The dish came out a bit sloppy with the sauce/grease pooling the plate. I couldn't eat the eggs because I couldn't get past how they were cooked they looked like Mac & cheese. The lamb chops weren't prepared medium they were quite tough but had a nice flavor. I love a potato in any form so the breakfast potatoes were excellent and a large portion so I shared them . Even though we were stuffed we had to get dessert and decided to share the peach cobbler. It was outstanding. I really liked Miss Toyas despite the rude hostess encounter when we arrived. We hope to return for dinner sometime in the future.

I recently visited Miss Toya's Creole House in Silver Spring, MD--worth noting, this location is focused on Creole cuisine, unlike the Southern Kitchen branch in Laurel, MD.I tried the loaded gumbo, a hearty blend of Andouille sausage, shrimp, crab leg, and chicken slow-cooked in Creole style and served with scallion rice. The flavors were wonderfully rich and robust, though it leaned a bit salty for my taste. That said, I'd definitely return to explore more of the menu! The customer service stood out--prompt, friendly, and attentive. The decor and ambiance also made for a warm, enjoyable dining experience. Overall, Miss Toya's Creole House is a spot I'd recommend for good food and great atmosphere.Oh the creole island drink gave me life , forgot to add this part.

I experienced Miss Toya's Creole House the first time recently. I loved the music and aesthetic of the restaurant! A lot of space for big parties if you choose to go in a big group. I just went with my aunt! My Aunt got the sangria which was huge and she said very delicious it had a popsicle at the top for decoration which we thought was cute. I had the shrimp and grits and it was so good very flavorful the grits alone were too good but with the shrimp it took it to a whole different level! And it tastes good the next day I definitely recommend the shrimp and grits. I cannot wait to go back and try more items off their menu! Our server was so sweet and very attentive!

It would have been better if the bartender wasn't in the backroom, while I wait on my drink at the bar. This place too expensive and the food too good for bad service. Do better.
